OH. . . MY. . . GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MRHD, you are the fucking bombdiggity! You have no idea how much I've looked forward to this report! Every morning after my shower, i checked to see if it was up. After class, i'd check. After work. After dinner. Before I get ready for bed. After I get ready for bed. I'm totally serious. I would check this site at least on half those occasions every day to see if this was up. Looks like the cycle's going to continue, though. Your report is wonderfully done! I'm eagerly waiting (and obsessively checking) for the next installation! Keep up the good work!

Placing your hall across the path at 8 is a horrible move even on high, on low against anyone with any type of skill is suicide. Although the report had no strategy value what so ever, the story was well written and entertaining.
#8 [z]MRHD[39521]
resnet180-39.resnet.buffalo.edu
You misunderstood the mini map chewtoy. I just went into single player after the game and started up a game v. a comp real quick and forgot to put it on one peon only, so I ended up with the eight and the pre-placed town hall. :) In the actual game I was at the six. I realize it could probably confuse because I don't think I ever actually showed another mini map in the report.

I wasn't really trying to go over strats for the map (even though some would probably argue, and sometimes with good reason, that that is the purpose of reports.), because it's been done so many times by people who know it a lot better than I do. But thanks for the input, I will try to go into more detail on strategies in the future, although I'm not the greatest player in the world but I'll do my best.

I really appreciate the fact that you all read this huge thing, I know the length of these discourages a lot of people. The whole thing takes up 48 pages on word so far, that is a lot to go through. :)

C'est formidable!!!

Sweet report, the story engrossed me...

One thing though, if you could find some way to interlace your story (Gunnar's) and your text about the actual events surrounding the game, your total product would be perfect. What I mean is, when you go from the detailed story about Gunnar leaving his homeland and meeting up with the king's guards to "Connecting to B-net was terrible today" it kind of takes away from the whole story.

Regardless, though, please keep them coming =)

Excellent!
I really looked forward to this report, and it surely didn't dissapoint me!
The only weakness of it is that it is more of a story than it is a battlereport, but who cares, it is your style so keep it that way.
You are a great writer, MRHD!
Perhaps you shold try to write a real fantasy book. You would make a lot of money!

P.S When u write the end, please be nice to Skarp of Stone. He is my favorite. Just let him become a farmer or something like that. He is not evil, he just don't have any feelings.... : )

Sorry, I meant to bring it out four weeks ago... but I had some pretty bad comp problems. In fact, I lost everything on my computer, including my almost completed Gunnar's Saga, Part V.=( That was pretty discouraging, and I was about to give up on the series altogether, but I just can't do that, because if I try to it will nag at the back of my mind forever.=) My second attempt at Part V is about halfway done now, and should be finished in a few days. But once I get back to college in late August I will have a LOT of free time on my hands, since I only have about ten hours of classes a WEEK this semester, and I plan to finish the series off quickly when I get back.

Hey [z]MRHD, great BRs. WarCraft Nation was wondering if you would do BRs for us. You would become staff and recieve everything our other staff members recieve. We have our own lag-free server and are about to host weekly or bi-weekly tournaments you could base you reports off of. We will also have our ladder seasons running soon. If you would not like to partcipate, we understand.

P.S. I am ztill waiting for the next BR. ;)

Well, I'm happy to say that progress has started up once again, and currently I am just looking for a good game to report.(I kinda suck now thanks to not playing for months, so it's not going all that great.=)) ])eat]-[aven, sounds interesting, maybe we should meet online and discuss it some more. The only problem I could see with becoming staff is that four months out of the year I can't really do much online, which could probably hurt things for you if I were staff. But I would be willing to do a few reports either way... right after I finish part 5... heck, I could base part 6 on one of the games in your tournament if you want. Or even part 5 for that matter if you reply soon, since I'm still looking for a good game to br for that one.

I know I haven't commented in a long time... I didn't want to admit it, but I think I have to. After going four months with practically no time online, and thus going four months without working on Gunnar's Saga, I found that I wasn't able to pick the thread of the story back up in my mind. I tried to work around it, but the writers block was pretty huge. It was hard to admit, since I was so set on getting out Part 5 fast. But I finally decided that I should swallow my pride and tell everyone what happened. Now this doesn't mean that I definantly will never finish this series, because I still want to... it just means that I have serious doubts that I will be able to, at least any time soon. Heck, I might have to change it to a War3 series to complete it. I figure if you're reading this that you've stuck with it way longer than I would have ever expected, so I think the least I can do is give you what I've done of Part 5 so far:

Last Chance

It was not long after Skarp of Stone informed Glum of the news that Gunnar had become retainer to the lands of Gilneas; Skarp had since taken a position next to Glum in the throne room, for Glum had implored him to stay awhile. As always, his face seemed to be devoid of anything but the most expressionless look, one more fit for a statue than an actual human being. Looking at him made Glum shudder. Putting this aside for the moment, Glum called for Hrut to be brought into the throne room. As the guards opened the cell door, they saw the huddled figure in the corner of the dank and gloomy cell, dirt encrusted in its body, wounds now beginning to fester with infection, frame reduced to the fragile form of a starved man. It had been days since Hrut had first been thrown into the dungeon, and he had deteriorated quickly.

Now the guards lifted him up, and what was left in him knew that the end had come. Hrut found himself not caring too much, for he had lived in the torture of neglect for the past days, and while he still feared death, he also yearned for it somewhat, for at least it was escape from the vile roaches and rats that had been his only company. The filth was brought before Glum as ordered, guards still holding on to it to prevent him from collapsing. Glum looked him over for a moment.

“Hrut, you let me down.” Glum proclaimed, staring into Hrut’s eyes. “You betrayed me. You betrayed this kingdom. And yet… and yet I am a reasonable man. I shall give you one more chance.”

At this, Hrut, who had seemed to be indifferent to his present situation, all of a sudden looked up, and light filled his eyes once more. “What does my Lord mean?” he asked in a faint and trembling voice, half expecting another beating.

“You may not realize this, but Gunnar has been enlisted as retainer to the kingdom of Gilneas.” Glum responded. “Obviously, this cannot be tolerated. We must let them know that we have pride in our nation. We must strike out against them, strike against the very walls of Gilneas Castle. This is where you come in Hrut. I want you to lead five divisions of my army against Gilneas.”

Now Hrut was visibly exciting. “My Liege is most understanding!” he exclaimed as loudly as his tattered body would allow. “I will of course do as you command, sire!”

Glum scowled. “Be forewarned Hrut. Should you fail me this time, and dare return to this land, I shall hang you myself.”

Hrut gulped. So… it is all or nothing. he thought, nervous. Either I become a hero, and defeat Gunnar… or I forfeit my life. This is it. This is my last chance. Gaining his feet firmly for the first time in days, Hrut shakily stood up straight. The guards tentatively let go of his arms. Glum smiled slightly.

“Guards! Have our friend here cleaned up, and give him new clothes. His mission is an important one, and he should be well prepared.” The guards, quick to obey, led Hrut out of the throne room, leaving Glum alone with Skarp of Stone, who had done nothing but view them all expressionlessly during the whole exchange.

“Hrut has no chance to win.” Skarp commentated, in a factual, sterile tone. “The forces of Gilneas are strong; five divisions will not be enough.”

Glum grinned. “I know. Hrut will serve as fodder, to make a sizeable dent in the Gilneas defensive lines. After he has done that, I want you to lead in the rest of the army for the kill.”

“As you wish.” Skarp replied; he did not even look over at Glum when he said this, nor did his tone of voice change. His composure was still as it always was. Glum became ever more disturbed over Skarp of Stone by the moment. I have just told him that I am sending out a large section of my army knowing that they will die. I have told him that he himself shall soon go into battle as well. And yet through it all, not so much as a single twitch flickered across his face, nor did his voice change in the least!… I begin to wonder if he is even human. But this also comforted Glum. For he realized that since Skarp appeared to be without emotion, then cowardice, blind rage, depression, (and perhaps even pain?), the emotions that plagued normal man in combat, and clouded their judgment, would not effect Skarp. And this Glum realized made Skarp of Stone a most formidable warrior indeed, one that was probably a more able warrior than even Gunnar.

Pillaging

Hrut had been gone from the lands of Lordaeron for a day now, and was bringing his army through Dalaran, sacking, pillaging, and looting as he went. At the moment they were at a small rural village and were stealing whatever they could carry and burning the rest, leaving the people of the town homeless and ruined. Everything they had worked hard for all their lives: their homes, their fields, their trades, and those few in number and yet priceless luxury goods; all were now gone. These people, who had believed that they could make a good life even in their rugged conditions, had all hope dashed away so suddenly and horribly.

One would think that the government of Dalaran, the Kirin Tor, would have done something to stop all of this. And indeed they did do something that almost seemed to be an action against it: they sent a small detachment to demand that Hrut stop his pillaging of their countryside, and that it could be considered as an act of war against the nation of Dalaran. However, Hrut responded by saying he only wanted a peaceful passage into Gilneas, but the villagers had been belligerent to him and his men, and that he was sacking the villages only in retaliation to their attacks on him. This was obviously a lie, of course, for no village would be so fool hardy as to attack such a large army as the one Hrut was now commanding. However the Kirin Tor, being for the most part weak of heart and character, seemed satisfied with Hrut’s reply, and did nothing more about the situation. Only Khadgar demanded that they take the army to thwart Hrut and defend the citizens; naturally, he was voted down by the other members of the Kirin Tor.

And so the war path of Hrut continued on this course, sacking each village he came to, with the Kirin Tor still twiddling their thumbs and glancing at each other nervously. A few days passed in this manner, until finally Hrut began to approach the Gilneas boarder. Soon it shall be my turn. Hrut thought to himself, his heart beginning to race rapidly. Soon I will clear my name, and Glum will reward me handsomely! His high esteem in me will return, and I will be the hero of all! For my glory I shall kill Gunnar and destroy the lands of Gilneas!

Gilneas Prepares for War

Genn Greymane sat in his throne, deep in thought, contemplating what he had just heard. A boarder guard had just came to inform him that an army from Lordaeron, led by the retainer to Glum, was soon going to descend upon their countryside. Gunnar and Prince Kol were present beside the King, and both were a little unnerved although not surprised by the news, for there was reason to believe that Glum would make such a move against them. Finally, Greymane had reached his decision. “Gunnar, take your army along with one of my own regiments, and intercept the forces from Lordaeron. They are somewhat strong in number, but still they are not a grave threat to us if we stop them soon.”

Gunnar bowed before the King. “As you wish my Lord. I will not allow Lordaeron to bring harm upon these lands.” Prince Kol looked over at them, somewhat agitated.

“What about me, father?” Kol asked, addressing Greymane. “Allow me to join Gunnar in battle.”

Greymane shoke his head solemnly. “No, my son. This attack is small for the task it seems to want to achieve, and I doubt Lordaeron would honestly think it is enough to destroy us. They might be using it as a decoy, and if that is the case I would like you to be here with your army. Afterall, Lordaeron has a strong navy, which could show up at our back door when we least expect it.”

Kol bowed respectfully to Greymane. “As you wish, father.” Kol then proceeded to leave the room, and Gunnar could tell that Kol was mad that his father had chosen Gunnar over himself to lead the defense operation, but he also respected Greymane’s wishes. Kol lives only for the fight. Gunnar thought. But what is to be expected of his generation, or mine for that matter, who knew only the Orcish Wars growing up? For so long, people had known nothing else but how to fight. Times of peace had been fleeting, with the various Orcish wars, and now this new, senseless struggle that was now tearing the land apart. What chance did people whose entire lives were encompassed in times of fighting have to know of anything other than fighting? It will end. Gunnar thought, determined. I will deal with my traitorous brother Glum, so that the world will at last know a lasting peace.

Gunnar then went out of the throne room and went to see Sigmund about the most recent turn of events. “It is not too surprising.” Sigmund said after hearing that the retainer of Lordaeron was on an invasion course with Gilneas. “Are we leaving soon to intercept them?”

Gunnar nodded. “Let us start rounding up our troops now.” He replied. “We must not let the enemy enter these lands, for it is our sworn duty to protect them.”

Sigmund sadly shook his head. “Lordearon. The enemy. Just a month ago I would have never thought that they could be one and the same.”

Gunnar sighed deeply. “I feel the same way. Indeed, fighting our countrymen is not something done lightly, and they themselves are victims of Glum’s deception, fooled into thinking their cause is a just one. But we must fight them. For the memory of my father and for the honor of Lordaeron. Now let us gather our forces.”

And with that, the two men left the room, and had their army readied for battle. When preparations were complete, Gunnar led the forces away from the castle, and towards the boarder, which the troops from Lordaeron would soon cross.

Forces Clash

Hrut had crossed the Dalaran-Gilneas boarder barely half an hour ago when his advance scouts brought word of a large army from the capitol coming their way; from what they were able to tell, the forces were being led by Gunnar himself. This is perfect! Hrut was jubilant over the fact that it would soon be time to settle things with Gunnar once and for all. You may have escaped me before, but not this time Gunnar! It will be your head, not mine, that Glum will take! As before, Hrut was carrying the axe “Blood Lion” at his side. With the very same weapon shall I kill father and son. This thought sent a shiver of perverse pleasure down his spine. Finally, as he came over a large hill, he was able to spot the banners of Gilneas in the distance, and the small figures of the frontline of those forces. It would not be long now.

Gunnar watched intently as the army from Lordaeron advanced forward; the battle to come, like many of the battles as of late, was one where he would fight for the honor of Lordaeron, despite the irony that the enemy was Lordaeron itself. Gunnar drew the sword “Avenger” as the opposition neared, and the first cries of battle rang forth.

Heh, so this site is still around? And so are these reports... now War3 is out, and I'm loving it.=) And of course, with the return to Warcraft I remembered this old fanfic/br hybrid... I can't believe it's already been two years. Too bad the pictures don't show up anymore, stupid geocities. I'm not going to promise anything or even say that it has a good chance of happening, but with the return of my interest to all things Warcraft I just might re-release this series fitted to War3 reports(with the completed story of course, which I have worked out in my mind since the last time I posted, it just needs to be put into words now.=)). That'll have to wait a month or two though, so I can get a computer good enough to run War3 over bnet(my current computer does all it can to keep up with the single player).

Heh, that would be funny. The worst part of it is though that I always seem to think of it when I DON'T have the time to write it(like right now, mid-terms week) and never think of it when I do. Maybe if I ever do, I'd just eliminate the battle report part of it completely and post the entire rest of the story I had planned out in one huge chunk of fan fiction. It's been years since I've played War2, so I probably couldn't give a decent game to report for that anymore, and because of work/college and getting my applications and such ready for law school I never was able to play War3 enough to get really good at it.

Maybe someday. Could be a month, a year, five years, maybe never. I don't know. But I haven't forgotten about Gunnar, for whatever that's worth(heck, I even named my LoD Barbarian after him;)).

Been thinking about it more, been gathering my thoughts on the story and outlining what I want to do with it. But my plans for it have grown far greater now... what I really want to do at this point is remove it from the Warcraft setting(obviously still in a fantasy one, with all original characters retaining their current names) and redo it as a full length work. Maybe even attempt to get it published(attempt is the key word, I doubt I actually could succeed). Failing at that, when/if I do finish this project I'll upload it to the internet somewhere and mention it in the forums here, so those who might be interested can give it a read.

Every half decade or so it seems I remember this site, search for it, and am more than a little surprised to find that both it and my old reports still exist. Since I have become a fan of George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire in the years that have passed since I wrote these reports I do feel a tiny twinge of guilt at leaving people hanging with this series.

To Illuvatar: I'm really sorry. I hope you're not still refreshing your screen.

Anyways, as near as I remember, the plan was for Gunnar to fight a frenzied battle with Hrut upon a cliff in a rain storm, wielding blood lion. Gunnar would kill him and toss blood-lion into the sea. This was going to start a period of calm, a bit of a cease-fire.

It was going to be broken with an assassination against the King of Gilneas' son. A series of bloody battles would bring Gunnar back to Lordaeron, where he would meet Glum in battle in the throne room. Before that though Skarp and Sigmund meet in battle outside; Skarp would kill Sigmund. Gunnar would come upon the scene in a rage and kill Skarp; Skarp would with his last breath calmly say that he had seen his death at Gunnar's hands as well.

Both Glum and Gunnar would be grievously wounded in their battle. Glum would succumb to his wounds; Gunnar would be on death's door, but eventually recover. There would be some proof of his innocence, I can't remember quite what, and then he would be proclaimed king of Lordaeron.

So for anyone who had been waiting thirteen years to know how it all was supposed to end, there you go! A shame War3 and WoW lore completely obliterated the lore here... although then again, maybe Glum and Gunnar did have an ignored little brother named Arthas. It's the quiet ones who keep to themselves that you got to watch out for.
