Wow, even more entertaining than last time - your bout with the little kid was great, and Decays msg was so well times it had me in tears :)

Maybe a little high 9, but you deserve it nonetheless :)

Okie...

The writing was good, and carries it to gold by itself. I've got a question though...why were there random line breaks in there? Is it the fact that IE is shitty beyond belief, or is it a formatting problem? Anyway, it got annoying but it didn't screw you over ;D

Also, I'd love it if you used actual photos of the tourney as opposed to the seemingly random grabbed pics. I dunno, it looks like you were trying too hard to get pics to me. I'd rather read a text only, personally.

Other than that, rox...I'd say 8.

I pull off my mask in order to shake hands with my opponent, but before I can, I hear a monstrous bellow rent the air from the other side of the room. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! THAT WAS NOT HIS TOUCH!” It’s the father of the boy I defeated. He barrels past the other in-progress bouts, grabs the director on the shoulder and screams “That was bullshit! How could you miss that off-target light?! He hit him on the shoulder!” The son looks embarrassed and finally pulls his dad aside. Crisis averted. Bout won.

OMFG, black card time... If I EVER had a parent/coach/fencer do that to me while refereeing, I wouldn't even say anything, just flash the black card and have the bout commitee escort them out.

BTW-you're allowed 10 minutes between DE bouts to rest. 3 minutes between pools bouts.

Anyways, congrats on the D04.

#39 [150671]
nr11-216-196-185-140.fuse.net
Kane: Epeé is very stationary, wrist and fingers oriented fencing. It uses wrist hits, arm hits, ect. You don't move very much.

Saber is the opposite! Running full tilt, slashing with the blade, not stabbing.

Foil is somewhere inbetween.
#40 badme[150673]
pcp05314423pcs.norstn01.pa.comcast.net
Foil target area is chest+stomach, and it has right of way. It's speedy at times and slow at times.

Epee's target area is everywhere. It has no right of way. As such, alot of hits require that you don't expose yourself, counter attack often, etc. Slow, like EE said.

Sabre, because the target area is upper body and you can cut with the side of the blade, generally involves very fast motions: Most of the touches are straight attack-evade parry or parry-riposte. Because you don't usually get complex blade motions, quick distance changes are even more key.

With this in mind, I raise my foil, bend my knees, and prepare to end the bout. Assuming a slow, unsteady pace with a fair amount of retreating, I hope to look unready, drawing him out and forcing him to reveal his game plan. He responds by advancing aggressively, aiming to attack. I step back, and false-parry, like last time. Like clockwork, he responds with a disengage, aiming at my flank, but before he can seal the touch, my parry comes back. I smile and riposte…only to find my foil knocked aside! In a desperate plea, he swung his foil back, catching me before I can evade his parry. His poor distance helps him here, as I’m probably not going to be able to retreat far enough before he brings his point to bear. Seizing the split-second I have before I’m skewered, I quickly remise and then run past him. He brings his foil around, misses me, and smacks the floor. The judge looks at the lights for a few seconds, thinks, and then says: “Fencer on my right misses, fencer on my left’s remise lands, fencer on my right hits floor. Bout, 15 to 9”.

technically this should have been his off target IMO, unless he remised to hit the floor, since the director is not supposed to look at where the touches hit, but just whose tempo it was when they were scored, and which way the machine registered them, an off target body hit should be called exactly the same as a floor/wall/ref/spectator/anything else hit if the light goes off for both of them

i liked this one too, and liked the writing style a bit better in this one, you're getting better as a writer, keep doing it. 9.
#46 badme[150766]
pcp05314423pcs.norstn01.pa.comcast.net
He hit the floor. Some of the refs I know, for whatever reason, automatically give the touch to the other guy if one of the fencers hits the floor.
#47 badme[150767]
pcp05314423pcs.norstn01.pa.comcast.net
Actually, I'm pretty sure that a hit on the floor doesn't count for anything, because in big competitions (JOs and such), the strips are made in such a way that you can't register touches for hitting them. And it isn't like that for just epée, but all the weapons.
#48 Luckylefty01[150799]
adsl-69-107-5-192.dsl.pltn13.pacbell.net
yes, thats why they do use grounded strips in big comps, is so this doesn't come up (no light=no stop). but if the light goes off, it counts as an off target and you have to stop, no matter where it hit, the director isn't supposed to change the box's rulings, no matter what it says, unless it can be demonstrated that there is a fault with the equipment (in which case the touch can be thrown out only, not changed to what the director thought happened/would have happened if everything had been working(in epee floor touches do get thrown out however)), only call the right of way.

if you're interested i'll look through the rulebook to find the actual rules that confirm this, i might do it anyway if i have some free time this afternoon.

but i'll grant you this is all theory fencing, as some directors don't really have the best grasp of the rules^^.(a director who when asked said the attacker was the person who started moving forward first was possibly one of the worst forms of this i've seen-_-).

also, how did you record what happened in each of the bouts you BRed? by memory then writing them down sometime later? or did you have someone recording it for you in some way.

i asked this in the comments of the last br, but looks like you aren't reading those anymore. are you left handed? because you seem to use the flank more then most righties i've seen, esp for ripostes.

#52 [150860]

mmm...flank ripostes. So much fun in foil. Pres di fer in 4 and flick it in right under the arm (assuming you're against another rightie). Except that I almost never fence foil anymore, only to give some of my teammates more foil practice when it's a slow foil night. I only fence epee competively now...

BTW-the score in one of the bouts in the first br seems wrong. The score was 3-1 you. Then there was an action where they hit and you tested your weapon and it didn't work, then got a yellow and a red card. After that action, the score was 3-3? The touch they scored gets annuled if your weapon doesnt work immediatly after the touch (assuming you follow the rules for having the ref test it). The yellow card is valid for bringing a non-working weapon to the strip. The red card (I'm guessing for the delaying the bout) is not valid. You are required to bring two weapons to the strip, if you go through both of them, you are allowed reasonable time to find another weapon.

Regarding the off target on the floor, I believe there is some leeway for the referee to determine where the touch landed. If a touch CLEARLY hits the floor and is nowhere near hitting the opponent, I believe it can be thrown out. Couple examples of this type of authority given to referees is the double-touch in epee (it's been so long since I fenced foil, that I don't have any foil examples off the top of my head):

-If one clearly hits and the other is clearly floor, a single touch is awarded to the fencer that scored the valid touch.
-If one is clearly valid and the other is questionable, the fencer scoring the valid touch is allowed to decide to keep or throw away the double.
-At nationals this year, I was awarded a single point even though the lights showed a double. The reason was that we both came together, he stepped off the side of the strip after we started the action. When the touches actually arrived he was off the strip and I was still on. The referee determined that due to him stepping off, I was awarded me a single touch.

"Forcing your opponent to completely abandon their favorite move after two touches will usually mentally shake them up, distracting them from the on-going mind game. That’s why the best fencers are so infuriating to fence. Even though they have their favorite moves, they’re able to instantly reform their tactics into anything else in their expansive reperortoire. It’s as if you can immediately change strats in a game of Starcraft as soon as you’re losing the unit matchup, without regard to tech or economic disadvantage. How do you counter that?"

Just re-read these two reports.

These rock badme.

Seriously, you should write a report every time you have a good bout. Even if you only have one good one in a tournament, you can just put several seperate bouts together into a report. I really like your discussion of strategy, especially the psychological parts.
