Wow JV that's some fast reading there.
I really enjoyed this as an introduction to WoW - it did it better than any long description on blizzard.com would ever do, and it really makes the report shine.
The story was nice too - the only thing I have against this setup, is keeping them in different parts. Merging them, and having a paragraph of story to move the report along every once in a while, would have worked better, if done right.
Now there's a lot of uninteresting stuff (so you killed furbolgs eh... and then more furbolgs... and then a large furbolg), but that's very much due to the nature of MMORPGS.
On a side note, WoW is shaping up to be great, adressing a lot of the issues with other games (I'm playing a bit of EQ now, camping/killstealing/looting rights are just a few of the things WoW seems to fix).
I'm feeling this as a 8.5 - have a 9. |

i have way too many questions for you
1) how many skill points are you alotted per character for stuff like tradeskills?
2) how many characters do you get per acct.?
3) do druids and tailors suck as much ass as everyone says they do?
4) how much are houses going for?
5) i assume you play on the normal shard and not pvp.. when you try to PK in your own land (you're NE and you try to kill a human player), does it require consent?
6) do gnomes get any bonuses as far as engineering/other tradeskills?
7) are there attack potions?
8) when you run in front of a player, do you block their movement, do they lose stamina, or do they run right through you?
9) is there a problem with unattended macroing yet?
10) how difficult are mounts to obtain/buy? and on that note, can you tame them?
11) how effective is pickpocketing? does it only apply to smaller objects, or could you possibly steal larger items like swords? and can you steal from players? what's the penalty for it?
12) what's the most popular alliance city at this point in time?
13) what are the different houses available?
14) what are the mac/PC system requirements?
if you answer any of these it'll be great =] thanks |

Lots of questions there... :)
1) You get one tradeskill point per level.
2) 8 per server
3) Druids don't suck, I can solo with my druid, emphasize on can. They heal decently. But they are probably the weakest class right now. Don't know about tailors, never tried it, never needed it.
4) No houses.
5) I play on the PvP server. In the homelands, the opposing faction may only attack NPC but can be attacked at any time.
6) Racial bonuses are not in yet.
7) You mean like bombs, or potions that increase your attack abillity? Both are in.
8) You just walk through them IIRC.
9) Not that I know of.
10) Mounts cost 400 skillpoints and 100 gold. You have to be level 40 to get one. It's debatable whether this is expensive or not. Skillpoints are easy to come by and gold... some people have it, some don't.
11) No idea, have to play a rogue yet.
12) Stormwind City, aka Lag Central.
13) see #4.
14) Don't know them by heart, but as with most Blizzard games, pretty reasonable :) |

First of all, let me just say that it is an awesome report and story... even though it might sound a bit false, considering it features me.
Second, MuLepton must be tired because he answered a few things wrong.
>1) how many skill points are you alotted per character for stuff like tradeskills?
There are skill points and there are talent points. MuLepton is describing Talents, which has so far only been implemented on the Warrior and the Mage. You get 1 talent point for every level you gain, meaning that a level 20 mage would have 19 talent points (yes, you start at level 1 with zero talent points).
Talent points enhance your abilities or even giving you new abilities. Nice stuff overall, making it possible for you to personalize your character.
Ok, Trade Skills are strictly speaking only Alchemy, Enchanting, Tailoring, Leatherworking, Blacksmith and Engineering... however it is commonly used for all non-class specific skills that you can be trained in, such as Lockpicking, First Aid, Mining, Herbalism, Fishing etc. You gain 1 skill point for every 500 experience points you earn through killing monsters. This figure might of course change as the Beta progress.
The trade skill system works so that the very first novice-level is very cheap to learn, costing roughly between 5 to 50 skillpoints. However, then the cost keeps getting steeper. If you wish to master Blacksmithing, then you can't afford to master other trade skills.
>3) do druids and tailors suck as much ass as everyone says they do?
The problem with Druids is that their shapeshifting abilities are a bit too expensive. As a jack-of-all-trades, they will not out tank a warrior, out heal a priest or out smart a rogue... they are however very versatile, which should count for something. Blizzard will most likely keep tweaking the game, with several patches to come, as they do with all of their games.
Tailoring is a so-so skill. The classes that wear cloth armor are not the classes that relies on their armor or weaponary to survive. One nice thing with Tailors are that they can make extra poaches and bags... and believe me, you will very soon run out of inventory space so having an extra bag for your items is a really nice thing.
>4) how much are houses going for?
Player houses and shops have not yet been implemented. There are still some development talk about this. One thing though, unlike SWG where you could make your own little city, player houses in WoW will only be located in the capital cities (i.e. Stormwind, Iron Forge, Darnassus etc).

WoW - I'm impressed. I'm sorry that was a lame pun that just had to be used.
The seemless blending of battlereport and fiction, not to mention some innovative graphics, really made this report stand out for me. And the gametype - well, reporting the beta of the most highly anticipated game, probably, of all time is always a good choice.
That said, it's quite apparent that you reported a boring aspect of an interesting game - a minor quest facing similar monsters. However, that doesn't matter so much in this case, since the report was mostly an explanation of the game and, therefore, was made more clear by the simplicity of its plot. Also, the links ( if that's what they were ) didn't work.
All in all, I think this is about as close to a 9 as you can get. Great job, and I'm definitely looking forward to more! |

As MuLepton states in the beginning, WoW is evil... because it will steal your time if not your very soul. Yes, we faced lots of the same monsters over and over... but was it boring? Hell no!
You walk slowly down through dark twisting tunnels, trying to spot any creatures that might lurk ahead. You are always afraid to draw more attention than you can handle... and the high respawn rate means that you can't afford to stay idle. You must keep going forward, or you will soon be fighting on two sides... |

Nope... you must have a unique name. One reason why I seldom use "Rincewind" in multiplayer games since it tends to be already taken. It is just by a freak accident that during WC3 beta I used that name, and it has sort of stuck in those communities I frequent...
Btw, one reason why you can't have multiple names is that there is a mail feature, allowing you to send items to players... or messages, like "please send me 10 Mithril Ore". WoW's mail service cost 30 copper to use (a big sum if you have just started)... however there is a feature that has already resulted in the first couple of scams. You can send a mail that the receiver has to pay for. Thus some chaps have sent a mail along the lines "Here is the enchanted mail you wanted" - and then the receiver pays half their fortune to get a piss poor item.
Similar scams are going on in the auction houses, where people try to sell things twice their market value...
Yep, we are one big happy family... =P |

what kind of stuff can thieves steal? just small stuff? |
| #34 Rincewind (aka. Stahlin, aka. Jarlabanke)[151396] |
| cacher2.ericsson.net |
I have not played thieves yes - so I'm not that hot on all their combat abilities. However, I doubt that you can steal from players, because the pvp-combat features are still beeing developed.
Now, here comes a short description of the classes and how they work and the current beta-problems they have.
Warriors
This class is very well balanced and very fun to play. If you think of the Warrior as the big damage-doer, then you better think again. Warriors are tanks. Sure they can do a lot of damage, but their main task is to keep the monsters attention so that the mage in the rear can nuke them. The warrior is most likely the class that is closest to being finished.
Mage
Overpowered with insane nukes at the moment, but even after tweaking they will be the class that deals the damage. They are fragile however, and thanks to their nukes, the monster will run towards them (the AI ain't dumb). The task in most groups is to keep the mage alive.
Priests
This is the healer class that rounds up the clasic three class-combo. The mage deals the damage, the warrior keeps the monsters' attention and the Priest heals the warrior. For the moment the Priest is slightly too good, in the sense it has one nifty nuke spell.
Rogue
The rogue is generally there for crowd control and to weaken end-bosses. It has a melee dps that is almost equal to the mage's nukes. If you want to be a lethal killing swordsman, similar to the BG2's Kensai, then you should go with the Rogue.
Druid
This is a jack-of-all trades between the above four classes. Druids can heal and they have ranged spells that can deal some nice damage. They can tank in their bear shape and they can do nice dps in their cat shape. The problem here is that the shapeshifting skills are quite weak for the moment. There is also still some balance tweaking to the other abilities.
Warlock
The warlock's speciality is curses, damage over time spells and that they can summon one demon as companion. There is a still a bit fleshing out of this class, since its role in a party is a bit vague.
Hunter
Not yet implemented.
Shaman (Horde only)
This is a supporting spellcaster, that later on can wear mail and help out in the melee combat. The problem with Shaman would most likely be that he is just freaking too versatile. Every horde party wants a Shaman for that last slot.
Paladin (Alliance only)
A melee fighter with supporting spells. The Paladin is in need for some big changes, because he has some abilities (Divine Shield among other) that are far too powerful, making the Paladin to a winner in duels... while at the same time the Paladin has abilities that are so weak and inefficient that he is a liability to any party. The Paladin is also considered as quite boring to play. Bliz' is aware of the problem, so this summary will most likely be inacurate when the game goes live. |

The price is still too early to say. But I wager it will be something between 20$ and 40$. Then of course there will be a monthly fee. Blizzard has also hinted about making a WoW-expansion, where they perhaps include mounted battles.
How long will the beta last?... Tough question. It actually feels that we are playing a finished product. I beta-tested SWG and it was far from as complete as WoW is. Then again, SWG has also got lot of flames from beeing a really poor MMORPG that more lived upon its name than its content.
Let me say like this... the next patch will allow us to reach level 55 with our characters. The finished product will have a level cap of 60. This hints that it is really closed to beeing finished. However, there are some balance issues left to do. The Horde areas still needs some tweaking, the classes needs to be ironed out and most importantly the PvP aspect must be set in stone.
A rough guess, and I would say that it will be released spring 2005.

The most you could hear from officials on the boards was "late 2004", whatever that means. I think Rince's guess of the initial price is a good one - monthly fees are still being discussed, but I guess we'll end up in the 12$ range.
Rince also mentioned the level cap, but I don't think that's the only factor determining a possible release date - there are other things which are not yet in the game but supposedly should be tested. Battlegrounds and Hero Classes, to name two. |
