I didn't find the conversation interspersed between the musings on suicide very realistic.
For example:
"“Dude, forget about her, she’s not worth it.”
“Fuck you.”

“Look, I’m trying to help you, you don’t need to rip my head off.”

I don't think it very likely that Tom would go from saying 'fuck you' twice to apologizing and speaking rationally. And I don't think his friend would stick around even after the first 'fuck you.' This is what made me stop and question as a reader, and you never want your reader to do that. You want your reader's trust, and to continue reading, your reader needs to trust you.
I very much liked the ending. I don't think the story would have said much if he'd have killed himself at the end. |

Well now. Suicide is the stupidest thing any human could possibly do. It is an extremely selfish cry for attention. While you are in your room trying to slit your wrists with a pocket knife, there are tons of people out in the world struggling to survive. You just decide to throw a pity party for yourself and it does nothing but hurt everyone around you, not to mention take a chunk out of your relative's wallets.

Read it. The contemplation bits were somewhat interesting, but the diaglogue was, as was said, a little sappy. I dunno if you've actually been through this but the optimism bit at the end made it seem like just a short burst of "fuck the world" that's quickly gotten over instead of full blown depression induced suicidalness. I think this is the kind that everyone thinks about but never really wants to do while thinking about it; it's just they're pissed off at someone or something and it seems the best way to slap them in the face.

Alright, I finally read it.
Oh man.
If you're writing a short story - which I think you were doing to some extent - you have to create an interesting narrative of some sort. You have to build your philosophy into a story, not structure a story around a philosophy. Your point can't BE your story, in other words. There's signs of a strident point throughout the entire story, but towards the end it just gets really, really heavy handed and ridiculous. If you're trying to communicate a theme, for heaven's sake do it subtly or not at all. This was about as subtly deep as the epic allegories "The Faerie Queene," and not nearly as exciting.
Also, if you ARE making a point, the sense of optimism prevailing over despair just is overdone, in my opinion. Try and approach it in a different way - this was just too cliched, if you ask me.
Your dialogue was really, really bad. I agree with everything Kane, Mehdi and Lucky said in this comment section. It just seemed utterly manufactured, and I couldn't help myself from some sense of disgust. You might want to try harder to try and imagine yourself in the character's shoes. Also, the character names didn't help, what with Tom and Sally and goodness knows what else. People in real life don't have utterly generic names, try to mix it up a bit for added realism (since this is an attempt, I hope, to make a totally realistic story).

True, the dialogue could've been better, but as I was writing this short story, none of it read "corny" to me, because these were actual conversations that I took part in when consoling my friends or vice a versa.

Regarding rating reports of people I don't like . . . .
For goodness sake, raters have marked reports of reporters they didn't like since this site began - everybody knows that. Raters aren't actually biased at all. We have to go through a fairly rigorous selection process to show we AREN'T biased, and if we do give something a mark that's way out there we're sure to get a hell of a reaction from everyone else. Not only that, but the people we've been at the site and the comments we made in the past are a big reason we're raters now. Finally, if we do give consistantly bad and/or biased ratings our rater status can quite easily be taken away. If you get a bad mark, don't go crying about it and saying you're the victim of a biased rater: I did that in the past and, believe me, it looks and is retarded.
That said, in this and any case I don't care who wrote what I'm evaluating at all. At first when I was reading this piece I kind of liked the usage of line breaks and was slightly impressed by the quality of the writing. Suffice to say that evaporated very quickly, but I'd have no problem giving you a gold or even a 10, WLJ, should you ever deserve it. Otherwise, odds are I wouldn't have been a rater for so long. |

A failure as a rater is someone who DOES let their biases affect their ratings. Raters here have rated reports from authors they didn't like since this site was created, but we don't give bad ratings just because we don't like the reporter. None of us here do that. The BobtheNewt thing was a big deal - and a very rare thing - but even his rating has some truth to it. Face it - you got a bad mark because you wrote a bad story, period.

A four is not that much lower than a five. Dag's rating is not absurdly unlike the others.
The story had no beggining, no middle, and no end. It had no character developement, no rising action, and no climax. The writing was decent. The dialogue was horrible. The resolution was abrupt and poor.
The story was pretty bad; I would have given it a four. This is coming from someone who has NOT had a flamewar with you on the forums. I won'y participate in one now, but this is the truth. So don't assume you got a 4.7 because the raters are biased. |
