I know EXACTLY what you mean. I too, am married, and spend more time gaming than I should, but not as much as I'd like. When I was much younger, I'd buy games like Super Mario Brothers and "solve it"... now, I have absolutely NO PATIENCE for games vs the computer that are overly challenging... I don't have time to waste learning how to jump onto one exact pipe or go back to square one.
When I got to the last few levels of BroodWar, I was like, "well, I could sit here and figure out the exact pattern of attack that it's going to take for me to take advantage of the triggers and win the game vs overwhelming odds... or I could cheat and watch the cinematic, then play online vs a real opponent that doesn't have cheating built into some kind of idiot savant AI"
Sometimes I have fun trying to improve my skills losing to better players, sometimes I like to have an easier public game, sometimes I like to backstab some comp-stompers, whatever is going to be enjoyable to me in those few hours that I can squeeze in for the only game I play (broodwar).
Losing valuable time getting beat on by computer AI, or simply building a defense that the computer slaughters itself on repeatedly is no fun at all to me. You can beat the computer with nearly the exact same build every game, but if you try to get fancy early on... the computer will know that without scouting at all and attack where you are weakest.
Although personally I haven't lost to the computer in forever... you must feel pretty friggin stupid. =) |

I thank you all for the comiseration. I am sure most SC players have been through similar situations. In answer to your question TT, it was because I was in an almost appoplectic frenzy and totally unable to think clearly. That's why I try not to play mad.
Since then, I have played countless games against the computer until I defeated 4 comp players on a melee island map. I know that it doesn't compare to a human player, but it teaches me to think clearly and not panic under pressure.
That is one of the reasons that I fare well against my friends on the network. |

I remember my first non-campaign game. I was zerg. I made a pair of lings. The terran computer attacked. I died.
Actually I still have screen shots of that game somewhere. Maybe I'll go through them and try to piece my first game together. (I won't post it though, more embarassing than this, comp was at full tech when I started my second hatchery) Atleast I've only played about....30 BGH games in my entire 18(?) or so months. It's getting dull. BR's own. I'd prolly be gone from SC if I didn't sign up to ref for the Brood War Bash, being told I'd need to write BR's, and to go to some site called "www.battlereports.com". Within a week I was in nohunters. Lucky me.(incase your wondering, nowadays I can ALMOST finish my spawning pool by the time the terran comp gets full tech, even thow the terran comp never GETS full tech anymore =[) |

I cheated through the last 4 episodes of Zerg BW. It got old and I wanted to see the pretty movies! Heh heh... then a friend mentioned that he cheesed through most of Zerg BW with nothing but mass cracklings... |

Here, I'll admit it: Fractal_Wave has been OWNED by the computer lots. LOTS. Has anyone in NoHunters never lost to a comp? I seriously doubt it.

| ok, i admit it. as soon as i cheated through the game, i tryed a comp game. yes, i admit i cheated cuz i sucked. i had black sheep wall cuz the comp cheats so i should, and i lost game 1, lost game 2, won game 3, won game 4 with NOOO Cheats!!!!!! I was sooo happy i went insane for like 1 hour! |
