Who's yo' magistracy?
I liked the report. Uh... don't have much more to say. How close is the game to AOE and how is the multiplayer gameplay? |

| How can any race not be considered extremely defensive? All these over-used towers and walls and artillary type weapons. I think I lose because I don't build any towers walls or artillary type weapons. |

I've played multiplayer games vs the computer and half a dozen online games. There is only ONE real strategy to this game. You advance at least to imperial age, then build a lot of some kickass unit (paladin's or perhaps your special unit) and like 8 trebs, then go to the other person's base and kick his ass.
The fine points:
o Focus on production - that's the key. Most games usually have a population limit 150-200 - you should have like 60 peons at the end of the game.
o Build your buildings close to the town center so that they are covered by arrow fire when you ring your town bell.
o As soon as you get to fuedal age, throw up a few towers near your base. Cover as many of your buildings and peons as you can and build your towers close enough so that they can cover each other (this way you don't have to deal with the minimum range problem).
o Remember to do the cartography upgrade at the market in multiplayer games
o Remember to do all the upgrades for the unit you intend to build enmass later. You also want to do all production related upgrades (check the mill, mining camp, lumber camp and town center for these).
o as soon as you get to castle age, get your castle up as fast as you can. If you are defensive, build it near your base. If you are offensive, build it near his. I usually build one close and then build and offensive one when I get an army together.
o When you attack, tell your units to guard your trebs. Let the trebs do the damage and use your guys mainly for protection. When moving trebs up, be aggressive. You want to give them lots of targets to destroy before you pack/unpack them again.
Given those tips, here are the reasons why the game is the way it is:
Defense early kicks ass in this game. If you do loom and use the bell properly, you can kill *any* early rush. If you are rush happy, you can build 6-8 archers as soon as you get to feudal age. When you get them, try to kill your opponents infantry and peons. Do not take on the town center and do not attack towers. Go for the guys on mines and lumber first then try to rush in and get some farmers. This will really piss off your enemy and increase your production gap. If you can't make an effective attack, bring those archers home and put them in the towers I told you to build.
The only real additional strat is offensive building. Building your towers/town center/castle at/in your enemy's base can really distract him and piss him off. If you're going to do this, I suggest you take a lot of peons (8-10). This will get things up quick and give you guys so you can immediately garrison. Since the maps are big and the guys are slow, building offensive buildings near your enemy is a good idea but not required.
Remember that the light cavalry unit costs NO gold or wood, only good. It's a fast unit that has 1/0 armor and 7 attack. That's not bad. Plus, the stable only costs like 275 wood. One of my favorite builds is to go heavy light cavalry (I have to build lots of farms, but peons and the wood are easy to find). This lets me conserve gold and wood for other things (ie. trebs, research). I also like to tithe to my partners which might be playing a more gold intensive strate like teutonic knights or janissaries.
Most of the special units/races suck. I find the best are the turks (janissaries don't have a minimum range like hand-cannoneers - they kill all units except upgraded cavalry)and the teutons (the 2x garrison bonus & +2/+5 range bonus for town center make them fierce - also the elite teutonic knight has 10/2 armor -> that 10 means they kick all hand-to-hand ass, including cavalry).
I also like the Byzantines to compliment because of the 3x monk heal rate team bonus - the extra building HPs & imperial age discount are also nice. The Vikings and Chinese aren't too shabby either (vikings get ships cheap and the handcart research for free - the chinese get the early peons and the big research discount).
This game would be a lot better if you could get more tech earlier. It would allow more rushes and strats. As it stands now, it's basically production war as far as I can tell. I mean if you could get carriers at the same point in the game as you could get hydra, wouldn't you build carriers?
There are a lot of nice features I wish SC had. You can get a running tally of overall score as the game progress, to see where you are and how you are doing. There's an idle peon button so you can find those 2 drones that aren't doing anything. You can queue like 30 units or something in each control group. Usually it makes all commands available for all units in the group (ie. if you have 1 ultralisk and 11 zerglings in a group, you can still burrow the zerglings without deselecting the ultra). You can shift-queue buildings (ie. this scv will build 3 depots). It takes the money as soon as you select the location - it doesn't wait for the peon to get there. MS Gaming zone is way better than battle.net.
But, there's NO ATTACK MOVE!!!
All in all, not worth playing. I'm back to sc already.

well in a game around 200 pop that lasts over an hour I usually have about 130 villagers or so....
I like aok about as much as bw but bw is still a better game over all...it is old and still the best game I have played and defense is not really stressed...I maybe build 2 towers in the game..most of my vills are under protection of tc
hopefully I'll get some pics of my games and post a bunch of pics so you guys can see some fun and dramatic attacks in aoe =)
see you guys in the zone

AoK kicks BW's ass!
Don't get me wrong, I love BW and I am, if I may say so, DAMN GOOD at it, but it have become boring for me to just use my strat all the time... Rush with lings to get some if their scvs or whatever, sunk in, get guards and mutas, boom, he's dead.
AoK is different. For example, if they go random, Byz is a good choice, cause of their cheap counterunits. Otherwise, use the counterciv. Every civ has a counter civ. Mongols fall to byzantines if the byz player knows how to play them, etc.
And using a one unit army in AoK is often sucide, unless you are harrasing vills with some lcav. Combined arms is very important.
And as SOON AS YOU GET TO CASTLE, go build expansions EVERYWHERE. Take all stone and gold spots as you can and build tc's there. Try to get a base in the middle to launch attacks and as a warning from incoming attacks. Forward bases are very important.
And vills...
Ahh, villagers. They are a blessing. Can't live with the dirty little schmucks, can't live without them. In a 200 pop game, it is very rare to see me with less then 120 villagers, and even this is to little. 60-79% of your pop should be villagers. Also, when attacking, your primary targets are:
1:VILLAGERS
2:TOWN CENTERS
3:CASTLES
4:The rest
Look me up on the zone if ya like. Me and the other JKA's usually hang around in impy (Imperial Horizon).
