Is this another, "The hacker among us"? Should I start guessing names? Or is this just trying to warn against the hazards of the hacking? Or pure fiction? I couldn't tell. Well written whatever it is. Good work Drefsab.

It would have been even more ironic if, while Jimmy was trying to find Andy6 for another game, he heard a knock on the front door. Andy heard his mother open the door, and laugh a drunken greeting to her "guy friend". Andy ignored the sounds of kissing and laughing and the sound of the couch creaking rapidly for about 10 minutes, but then he heard his mother talking about him.

"All he ever does is play Starcreate... Spacecraft, I forget the name of it, and sometimes it gets him so upset," Jimmy's mother complained.

"Starcraft? I play that game. It's pretty fun, but some of the kids take it too seriously, talking shit about fucking each other's mothers and all sorts of insults."

Jimmy listened intently now. The guy, barely out of highschool, that his mother was seeing played Starcraft? Maybe he wasn't so bad after all... maybe he...

The boyfriend was talking again, "Yeah, I log on as Andy6, you should have your kid look me up online sometime..."

Jimmy's eyes grew wide as saucers... Nooo. NO! NOOO!

Hehee... great report Drefsab.

Jimmy needs to move out and get an apartment and a job. His mother should join AA and seek some sort of anti-abuse program; beating you children is wrong. The moral of the story is: play for fun, not rotten reasons like getting even and being a trash talking "your momma" loser-arse newb...hehe maybe that was too deep...well later...

King, my point in this little bit of writing was to try and give a different perspective on the people we meet online. Every person acts the way they do for a reason.

I was actually trying to give one of many answers to your very broad question: "<i>Why do people insult others so harshly</i>"

Drefsab, you made a really good point here. What can you do in a situation like this? I mean, on the one hand, a lot of the lamers on b.net are kids who don't know any better, so I suppose you can't really blame them for being assholes.

On the other hand, that doesn't make it any less lame when somebody accuses you of hacking and then disconnects.

I have to say, I don't care if that guy beats you by hacking and swears every other word he says. That battle report wasn't mean, cruel, and deplorable. I like crude humor as much as the next person, but making up the 'situation' for Jimmy was not the best idea. I was honestly offended to read this, and was surprised it wasn't screened by the site's maintainer. I would hope you're an ok person, so just... try not to be so "realistic" (though that's the wrong word).

Why should this be offensive to anyone? Reality isn't always pretty, and if you are under the delusion that it is, you are setting yourself up for a serious fall later on in life.
#42 WilliamWC3[37215]
huru27.wuh.wustl.edu
I can understand why someone might have a problem with this report. For example someone in a situation like Jimmy's might resent the implications of it. Particularly if they didn't hack or curse people. Also though I'm sure it wasn't Dref's intentions some people are sure to draw paralells between some of the things in this report and things which have happened and are bound to take offense.

The idea behind this report is very good. Namely that one should find out where a "lamer" is coming from before one attempts to make his/her life miserable. However, some of the implications that people seem to be getting from this and which to me seems to be implied are dangerous. Namely, all / most "lamers" have a bad home life and a bad home life causes one to be a "lamer." (note I use to the term lamer loosely to refer to the type of kid Drefsab describes, hacks, curses others for no reason, discs, etc.)

Basically the report just unsettled me. The main reason I think is that it is a work of fiction and yet it is clearly implied that the story is factual. Perhaps this is based on personal experience. This would of course change everything although I think you should have made that clear.

Just my 2 cents. Again it is well written, whatever it is.

Willy, a mark of a good story is that it affects you.
#44 WilliamWC3[37224]
huru27.wuh.wustl.edu
Ya, Mark, I know thats why I said it was good writing. I just think it could be offensive. A lot of stories affect people. Some in good ways some in not so good ways. I just worry that this may affect peoples thinking too much. Not all lamers have home problems and not all kids with home problems are lamers. The story may not read that way but I think people will get that out of it and I just think its a little dangerous.

Personally, I am not too concerned but I understand why others might be.
#45 [37225]

William, I would direct to comment #34.

One person asked the question "<i>Why do people treat others so harshly</i>"

Its funny that they would ask that question. Its a question with many answers. My story is one of those answers, not the <i>only</i> answer.

To quote myself:

"<i>I was actually trying to give one of many answers to your very broad question: 'Why do people insult others so harshly'</i>"

Of course this isn't the story of all lamers on B.net, just the story of one lamer. A lamer who may or may not exist, but probably does.

Cheers,
Dref

My wife is a guidance couselor. There really are a lot of messed up kids out there like Jimmy. I guess, the really scary ones are playing FPS games not Starcraft. Just goes to show, we don't know the life stories of the people we play with or against. Be kind to others, you don't know what kind of impact you have on others. That kid you called a lamer might end up shooting up a school somewhere because you pushed him over the edge. Anyway, good story Dref, that is somebody's reality.

#58 shockwave[37536]
exchange1.sensable.com
Hey guys.
First, I thought the story was well written. There are two ways to react to this, which determines whether you're offended in the end.
One is to get the implication that all those AOL lamers are just pathetic kids with no lives. If Dref had ended the report like YRM suggested, it would have clearly given that impression that the purpose of the report was just to make fun of those kids and their pathetic lives and their pathetic attempts to gain credibility on b.net.
The other - and I think less common - reaction is to say that some of the people we play on b.net who swear and cuss us out really deserve our pity, because their real world lives really are that bad and this is their only recourse for staying sane. There is no doubt in my mind that some kids or even adults are like this in real life (getting into flame fests with adults who say they're in their 30's but just swear like kids and say stuff like, "Come on, just rematch me and I'll kick your !@##$ *ss" is just really really sad).
Or to put it another way - If you played some kid and he starts cussing you out in the end, then you found out that in real life, he was like this, how would you respond?
1) "Hahaha, your life sucks, I'm surprised natural selection didn't weed you out yet. You can't play Starcraft, and your real life sucks beyond belief. Go ahead and flame, but it must be sad not to have any friends, huh?"
2) "Man, I'm so sorry that whatever you're going through must drive you to do this. Let's talk."
Uhh, I'm not a great humanitarian all the time, so my reaction often is just to flame back when I'm flamed. It is easy to make implications about peoples' real lives and I'm sure some people *are* like Jimmy in RL or at least don't have many friends (hence, they spend all their time online and take the game that seriously). It's easy to laugh at them and say, "Must be fun sitting in front of the computer flaming people when you lose because you have no friends, huh?"

Some people read on my forum already about this kid who started cussing me out about how he was going to break my neck (I'm a black belt instructor and know 6 martial arts) and how I probably don't can't even add or do calculus (I have a summa cum laude master's degree from MIT in EECS). Heh, the problem is, when you, err, KNOW that you're better than them, it's easy to want to shove it down their throats, which will in the end just make them feel even worse if they're already bad off enough.

*sigh* Oh well, I know that not all people will have the same reaction, but reading this just gives me more incentive to try to be more sympathetic to the kids that flame me on b.net, whatever that means concretely.

#59 BW-sux[37580]
spider-wm066.proxy.aol.com
Just for the record: "Jimmy" is not me. Yes I use AOL (hate it, so slow, so busy), but that does not make me an AOL lamer. I have never used a hack, and I have never flamed someone for owning me at the game. My mom teaches alternative education (the bad kids and the ones that fail classes) and my dad is at the dinner table every night and is teaching me how to drive stick shift.
#60 Aquamarine[37846]

Man i feel sorry for Jimmy and his loser life; at the beginning i was hoping he was a good starcraft player to make up for his lousy life but that was not to be; i almost liked him until he used the hack..

#61 WarLeaderJustin[46893]
spider-wg033.proxy.aol.com
Even though no one is probably reading these comments anymore, I just want to let you know Dref. that I am 13. I found this "BR" incredibly stereotypical of young people. I may not be the normal teenager one finds on B.net, but you shouldn't judge us as a whole.

On a depressing note, I have AOL, am 13, and have a 233 Megahertz computer. BUT my mom's not an drunkie!

Otherwise, nice insight on immaturity that really bogs down B.net.
#62 [54300]
as530025.infocom.com
This was a story of <b>one</b> lamer on B.net. Its not meant to be stereotypical at all.

The Internet is a cruel place where people say many things that they would never say in real life. I just want those who read this little story to remember that there is a real life behind every lamer on the Internet.

Cheers,
Dref
