Very cool. Nice to see it done so well. I'm a good chessplayer as far as seat-of-the-pants playing goes, but I could not have analyzed the game the way you did. I learned some stuff from it, stuff that might come in handy whenever I next play my annual game of chess...

As a former chess player, I found this fascinating. It reminded me of why I love the game so much. Great report, and a major word out to Nd5 - that, in my opinion was the move that won the game. It would take at least three moves to get his queen anywhere after that, and you kept it so that he couldn't spare the time. Great job. I have an econ final right now, or I would comment more. A clever idea, written in an easy-to-follow method. I haven't played chess in many years and this report makes me want to get a game goin' right now. I never played very much or in competitive settings, so I don't know how good I am at all. Since some of your explanations had me chasing after them like the kid who missed the school bus, it's probably a safe bet that I'm not too impressive. Still, I knew enough to enjoy (and probably benefit from) reading about a game between better players. Well done.

#67 - I used Sigma Chess for the diagrams. 'Twas a pain :) Every diagram was done in this ridiculous fashion:
a) screen dump
b) crop image in PhotoDeluxe to be just the diagram
c) shrink image to 3/4 of original size (damn things were HUGE)
d) make a square yellow
e) save as PhotoShop-document (the ONLY format the prog allows)
f) import image into GraphicConverter
g) save as GIF
h) rinse and repeat
#68 It is said that anyone can learn how to play the game up until 1800-1900 ELO; to get beyond that you need real ability for the game. I know some 2300 players, but I still wouldn't call them "geniuses"... I think once you get over 2500-2600, then you're a genius :) Prolly don't have much of a life, either :)

| Kibites: I play the french a lot and i can tell your opponent is not strong in opening theory..3.ed5?! is not good. instead just Nf3 would have led to the "two knights variation" of which the concensus is unanimous..black equalizes. 3.ed5 isnt good as it 1.opens blacks light squared bishop up to development(pawn e6 is usually in the way) and more importantly 2.transposes to a worse varition of the "exchange varaition" which is normaly 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.ed5 ed5 4.Bd3 and whites compensation for "allowing the light square bishop out" is attacking chances on the kingside..black can equalise anyway though through Ne7 at some point followed by Bf5!..if white tries Qf3 after Ne7 to stop Bf5 then this is met by Qe7+! ..now in this case with the white knight developed to c3(instead of pawn d4) black plays Bf5! straight away..in a sense white has lost time with Nc3 a move that doesnt do anything for white(didnt even prevent d5!)black can play his knight to Nf6(a better square than Ne7) and if Bg5 then Qb6 or Nbd7= and black can castle and start central operations with c5 or c6 and Bd6 with an attack..i play on chess.net come on in and check it out sometime |

Brilliantly awsome. I've tried to get into chess a few times, but its so much damn work to get good. And I know that even if I did get good, I'd probably stop playing after a year and lose all my skills. Which is yet another relation between chess and SC. But hey, this was really nice.
