I give this a solid 9. I love reports on new types of "battles" as this certainly was. Furthermore the writing was excellent. It must have been difficult to remember all that had happened that day to create a battle report. Did you take notes right when you got home?

Nice work!

Thanks Vegas :)

Actually, while I was planning on taking note at the the tournament itself (Went to the Junior Olympics in Foil and forgot to do anything with that one), the outcome of the tournament really made me want to forget about the whole thing. I'm very, very indebted to Des, convincing me to essentially write the whole thing the day after.

Although the time period in the report is quite a bit off. I wrote most of this report on that day about a month and a half ago, so the 'last weekend' bit is innacurrate.

Thanks for the comments, though, Vegas, especially on the writing, and I've extremely happy you enjoyed :)

Incidentally, where do you live? I fence as well, you see. Fenced one tournament, finished dead last. C-and-under does that to new fencers.

Nice report, btw, though I found the intro a bit - skippable. ;)

That shit with the backup foil was totally gay.

You should have used 'jitsu-jump-kick' on his ass to show him that you are still in control.

Good report though. It was like reading a fantasy novel, except badme isnt a totally hot dark elf ranger and the 20 year old woman probably wasnt an orc.

Holy shit, memories!

Yeah, as badme knows, I fenced foil for two years. So naturally this report struck some chords.

Getting tagged by stupid mistakes is the story of my fencing career.

I give this a 10.

Wow, nice. A report on fencing, I never would have thought about it... Cept, I don't do fencing, but whatever. :-) Easy 9, maybe even a 10?

"She immediately took a defensive posture, slowly retreating from my advance, but unaware to the sudden danger my lure had." Heh.

I apologize for finally getting around to reading this so late (I proofread it, what the hell?) but I was actually surprised. Very well written, most of the time I had a clear mental image of Greasy launching attacks at you as you parried and lunged. Better luck next tournament, make another report when you snag 'E' ;o.

Well after looking at the picture at the end I suddenly feel the need to fence.

Actually, I've been interested in fencing for a very long time, just I never have tried it. Seems fun, mostly when disarming an opponent and then laughing in their faces.

Hey look I was mentioned in a report ;]:
"Everyone from NH: You might not have actually helped me, and...we'll leave it at that, ok? ^-_-^"

7.5. Question: Do you recieve a point if you disarm your opponent or do you still have to poke them?
#28 badme[150514]
pcp05314423pcs.norstn01.pa.comcast.net
Actually, dropping your weapon is a penalty--either a yellow card (warning, do it again and you get a red card) or a red card (point to the other person), I can't remember. I didn't actually disarm anyone; if you're thinking about the whole 'blade hanging uselessly at her side', I just meant that she was completely unprepared to bring it back in line/do anything with it before I riposted after my parry. I didn't actually knock it out of her hand ;)

BTW, don't bother with trying to knock the opponent's blade out of their hand. You'd have to parry really strongly, which is generally bad (leaves you very open to disengages, especially). Parries usually should be quick and firm, but not overbearing.

And 7.5?! </3 :)

Oh yes...I was hanging onto the edge of my seat in excitement, especially that one part when badme decided that it was "time to end this." A real thriller, that. Left me gasping for air, waiting, anticipating, longing for the next installment of badme's fencing career........On a more honest note, I think that it is only fair to say to the audience that I am notorious for lying and twisting truths. Badme, this hasn't changed yet....Ah yes, for one brief shining moment, I was interested in the story. Then I read it.

good report over all, i liked it a lot. I started fencing (I fence foil and epee, although i mess around with saber sometimes) around last march i think, and although i couldn't grab a rating last season, i came close (was seeded 6th out of 32+ after the pools in a b2 rated tournament, but the fencer i had to face in my first DE was a fucking C who had done really badly in the pools(seeded 27th!)(partly thanks to me^^), and i lost the bout 15-13:/

a couple things i'd like to comment on though. you say underarm protectors are optional, whereas everywhere ive seen they're required for all tournaments. your definition of a reposte as an attack after a parry would be more correct in my opinion if you made it an attempt to score after a parry(my definition of attack (which i stole from my coach^^) is "the first attempt to score")

in reply to "Question: Do you recieve a point if you disarm your opponent or do you still have to poke them?"

if they do lose their weapon, they can get a yellow card for it (red card and point for you 2nd offense+) but you dont get a point for the actually action unless you hit them in the same tempo as the one they lose thier blade in.(1 tempo is the time it takes to make a simple attack) so if you beat the blade really hard to make them drop it, even if you hit them afterword you probably wouldn't get a point, since the beat was the tempo in which they lost thier blade, and the the attack would be a tempo after that.

where in the US do you fence? because over here in california in smaller tournaments we usually do 1 round of pools with 100% promoted to DEs right after that, or possibly with only 80% promoted in bigger events.

last question, are you left handed? because it sounds likely to me, unless you use the flank a lot more then a lot of rightys, esp. for repostes.

an 8 or 9 sounds good for the report to me, i liked it a lot, and new things are always good, i'll have to think about doing something like this myself next season sometime. gl on getting that D you want, unless you got it in the 2nd one, i haven't read that one yet:P.

"a couple things i'd like to comment on though. you say underarm protectors are optional, whereas everywhere ive seen they're required for all tournaments."

I've never actually seen them required as in they'll be examined for a bout, I've always assumed it was personal opinion.

"your definition of a reposte as an attack after a parry would be more correct in my opinion if you made it an attempt to score after a parry(my definition of attack (which i stole from my coach^^) is "the first attempt to score")"

I wanted to keep it simple for my ignorant readers :D

"in reply to "Question: Do you recieve a point if you disarm your opponent or do you still have to poke them?"

if they do lose their weapon, they can get a yellow card for it (red card and point for you 2nd offense+) but you dont get a point for the actually action unless you hit them in the same tempo as the one they lose thier blade in.(1 tempo is the time it takes to make a simple attack) so if you beat the blade really hard to make them drop it, even if you hit them afterword you probably wouldn't get a point, since the beat was the tempo in which they lost thier blade, and the the attack would be a tempo after that."

Yeah, that's correct. I've actually forgotten that you can snag a point if you hit in the same tempo, but that generally entails them dropping the weapon on their own, which doesn't happen often.

"where in the US do you fence? because over here in california in smaller tournaments we usually do 1 round of pools with 100% promoted to DEs right after that, or possibly with only 80% promoted in bigger events."

PA. There's different options available: 1 round of pools is the most common but not the only possibility.

"last question, are you left handed? because it sounds likely to me, unless you use the flank a lot more then a lot of rightys, esp. for repostes."

I love hitting there :)
