This was a report I wrote a WHILE back. I wasn't as good as I am now, but again, I have sort of retired. But anyway, instead of trashing this report, I thought it would be nice to share my sentiments with all you folks. After all, the reports generated by you guys were great entertainment - especially those with pictures. Sorry, but this report was done too long ago, and I never thought of writing this report until the end. Anyway, the following is pretty much what I wrote back then, with a few modifications on grammar and format issues. Enjoy!
This is my first battle report. It serves only as food for thought and entertainment. To me, this battle was one very interesting one, therefore, it prompted me to write it down. Perhaps it may serve as a future reference because it includes strategies and thoughts at the time. Let me waste your time no further. Let's dive into the details.
We played on The Hunters map. It's standard among people who hang around Ravager (a channel most War members reside on). [Editor's note: Lost Temple wasn't quite popular at this time - I think this game was played on Version 1.04] Although BGH is more popular, I for one consider it rather gay, since one could turtle in his/her den for a while, without worrying that resources will ever run low. It doesn't make much sense since this strategy game involves getting rid of opponents (in multi-player games) as fast as possible so they can't cause you trouble in the future. Hence rushing is a great tactic, especially on The Hunters in which traversing the map takes a matter of seconds (okay, I'm exaggerating, but you understand my point).
The Teams were as follows with the corresponding position on the map in parentheses:
Legend:
Name ((clock positioning[alternate method]) - Race)
Top:
Bik (11[TL]) - Zerg
WarVern (5[BR]) - Zerg
WarWind (12[Top]) - Zerg
Bottom:
alienrapist (1[TR]) - Protoss
WarSaga (6[Bottom]) - Protoss
WarSuoN (3[Right]) - Random (Protoss)
So … knowingly that the Top team was gonna go fast lings, each one of us decided to use our fast builds, with pylon at 7, and gateway at 9 (for me at least), then another gateway followed by another pylon. At the appropriate moment, I added an extra gateway, without slowing down zealot production.
WarSaga decided on a very fast zealot rush - like 2 zealots per team member. Unfortunately, alienrapist (AR) which was next to the 2 zergs was their first victim. With a whopping 12 lings in the first few minutes, alienrapist's base was, within minutes, destroyed - although it didn't go down without a good fight. Luckily, AR managed to save enough resources to construct a new nexus at BL's expansion. In retrospect, it would have been more wise to place the nexus at WarSaga's expansion [6 o'clock], since WarSaga could aid AR if help was needed. [Editor's note: Perhaps AR didn't have enough time to create a nexus at WarSaga's Expansion] Nevertheless after AR's base was leveled to the ground, there was a brief moment in which everyone went back to maximizing their economy - a truce welcomed by both sides.
I started pumping zealots like mad - having a total of 4 gateways and teching s l o w l y because I had to be sure that center was ours to hold. A lot of lings then emerged near the entrance of WarSaga's base, so I rushed to help. Luckily he had help of DT's, who made short of those pesky lings. I regrouped my troops near the middle again. And built a pylon to start holding some ground with cannons. The size of my force grew fast. After a saturation point, we decided it was time we pay back what we owed them. Groups of zealots/dragoons/DT's from WarSaga and me paid a visit to WarVern's base at 5 (BR). It took 2 waves to destroy his base. I didn't really want to send off the second wave, because it was guarding center ground, but hey, if I can get rid of an opponent, it's gonna be easier for me later anyway. So, we crushed his 4 sunkens + lings, and quickly got back to the center, although it was too late, we lost the center to a group of hydras and lings. Before destroying everything at 5, I built an expansion at 5's expansion patch, followed by another at 5. I was expanding like mad. But I felt it was alright. I had a group of corsairs built so I wasn't worried about mutalisks roaming around.
We took a break again after regaining center with precise blitz-storming from WarSaga's Temps and our random infantry. WarSaga and I started to build pylons and cannons again in the center, and hopefully, we were gonna hold this time. Both of us got High Templars ready to fry packs of zerg insects!, if they dare entered this region. The zergs soon launched this massive attack with lings, hydras and (LOTS of) mutas . Psionic energy were released from several High Templars which weakened their force. We then used DT's, dragoons and zealots to counter their remaining forces. My corsairs also engaged in battle drove away the remaining mutas away (the storms got rid of a large portion of them).
I think at this time, AR's nexus was destroyed by scouting mutalisks. I made my move a bit too late. But it wasn't until later that I realized what happened. At any rate, I think we finally secured center ground with a mixed group of units and cannons. At this time, I believe I had a group of 11 corsairs - so I thought it would be fun to hunt overlords. I went to all the bases, one by one and eradicated a fair number of overlords. Although I sustained some losses, the zerg cerebrates suffered greatly from supply shortages, which must have slowed down production of new units. At the second time round of the overlord hunting, the cerebrates had spore colonies which distracted me a bit, because I didn't have disruption web yet. So I decided to take a break and focus on my economy. My primary bases mineral/gas resources were depleted, but with 2 expansions up and running at full steam my supply of resources was steady. I also built another expansion at center ground but didn't make much use of it because I was busy taking care of matters on hand.
While the cerebrates were taking some time recovering from the lost overlords, we decided to pay a visit to 9 o'clock. I had a group of zealots, 4 dragoons, and a huge corsair fleet. I think WS brought DT's and a crazy force of dragoons. Perhaps a few templars each trailed behind for support. Corsairs did their thing with disruption web and the 5 or so sunkens and 1 spore were rendered helpless. Any zerg warriors present there were wiped out, and the base was slowly leveled. After the key buildings were destroyed, WS moved his troops out to hold center ground in case of an assault. Since I was designated as the clean-up guy, I did just that. *grumble* I'm always second in command. Yep, WarSaga is one hell of a good commanding general. So we slowly advanced toward the choke linking the 3 upper bases with pylons and cannons. Then we found out that someone was trying to expand below 12, we put our forces together and destroyed it. The place was covered with lurkers, but storm took care of them. WS wanted to destroy 1 because 11 and 12 were probably too difficult to kill at one time. Again, corsairs did their job disabling the defenses and so we walked in pretty much unscathed. I finally got the leg enhancements for the zealots now - a little late, but what the hell. WarVern finally succumbed to the power of the Protoss and left.
After that, we were sure that victory was ours to claim, so we just played around. The cerebrates also knew that, so Bik challenged us if we could get in his base without templars. WarSaga did just that, he walked right in. Heh heh … obviously his troops were massacred by the spines, but he did "get in." So, after exchanging GG's, we all left.
WarSaga obviously did the best overall, followed by me, then the cerebrates, then AR. Felt sorry for him. He was constantly being pummeled by the Zergs. It probably wasn't too good a game for him. He almost got back on his feet, but always pushed down by the cerebrates.
A few thoughts on the game:
Overlord hunting is cool with corsairs.
Mixing troops is extremely important. Good thing WarSaga and me had different tastes in troops. I mainly relied on zealots and corsairs, with templars and dragoons on the side. WS was primarily a DT and dragoon guy, with templars. Good thing that we were diverse. For a moment, the cerebrates went full scale lings with dark swarm support. Good thing my zealots were in front to hold off the lings while we executors filled the sky with crackles of psionic energy. Oh right, WarSaga also went Archons a bit to counter the lings, which was a smart idea. The reason I used zealots and corsairs/templars primarily was because of the gas constraint. I could pump out zealots like no tomorrow. With the remaining resources, I would build a pair of corsairs. Anything leftover would be used for High Templars. It was pretty cool that way because by the time I trained the 2 pairs of corsairs I would have like 200/800 minerals/gas, so I could pump out High Templars easily (editor's note: I should have built more stargates, DOH!). I have an idea of what WarSaga thinks about the flexibility of dragoons. It's simply great - damaging both land and air. And if there were mass lings, Dt's could help get rid of them, as well as storm, since dragoons can sustain 1 full storm without dying. Unfortunately, the Dt's can't take storm too well, but that's a different story.
Neither WarSaga nor me teched that high - sorry, I say this for myself. If we did a little higher, it would have been great, but confronting such heat and stress from battle, I did not have time to think, except pump out more units. I only made a few upgrades. Corsair web, storm, leg enhancement, dragoon range, and random ground troop upgrades. With the resources I had, I could have upgraded my units to a greater degree, but it's a lesson to be learned. Upgrade whenever you have the resources and build more upgrade structures so you don't have to wait for it to finish. Upgrade structures are cheap as hell anyway, NOT =).
I think toss has one of the greatest flexibility in building structures, and not wasting harvesting resource time. Usually, if I need a building made, I pick one peon off the mineral line (not gas), and build the building and chain command the peon to immediately go back to the mineral field. I only use this late game because usually fighting is really intense, and income is generally at least 50/20 (minerals/gas) per second. A few less minerals is tolerable, but to lack a key building really isn't. I have angered myself for ignoring my supply count, until it was rather late. Oh well …
I think drops are totally awesome. During this game, I really feared an 8 overlord upgraded ling drop. That kind of offense is completely-ridiculously hard to counter unless you got storms ready. That never happened, so phew. A hydra drop wouldn't have been too bad for toss though to take care of though … but I could be wrong.
I guess this ends my battle report. I probably won't make too many comments next time, just the actual events that happened would be sufficient. It was one of my most fun games I have every played so I had many thoughts on it. Well, thanks if you read this far. Until next time …
