The Map
The Game
Me and my friend 1_Brave_Peon(1BP) were up for a game of Vanilla Starcraft, so I told him to make a game and pick a map randomly. Upon joining I saw he had chosen Bridge Over the River Styx as the map, and with gls on both our parts the game commenced. I randomed to zerg at the six o'clock starting position, and unbeknownst to me at the time 1BP had randomed to Protoss at the 12 o'clock start. Not knowing my opponent's race, I kept my overlord at home to preserve it from any marines my opponent might have if he were Terran. I went with a conservative spawning pool on my eighth drone, followed by an overlord and drones till 16, followed by another overlord and then interspersed drones and zerglings. At about this time a probe came into scout my base. It swept through my main and continued on, presumably to watch my natural expansion. I then morphed a pair of sunken colonies for defense while powering and sent a drone north to scout. My drone observed a pair of gateways and a warping cybernetics core before it was dispatched by zealots.
Minerals were beginning to pile up so I sent 4 zerglings to dispatch the probe at my natural and built a hatchery there, as well as a hatchery at my main for added troop production. My natural finished and I placed three sunkens there for defense(a little excessive maybe, but better safe then sorry as well). I began cranking drones at my natural and lings from the two hatches at home while getting gas from both sites. I had mass hydras in mind, followed up by some Hive tech if I could get the gas.
I took six lings and attack moved them towards 1BP's main, seeking recon and maybe to stir up a little trouble as well. Unfortunately the lings were met by three zealots and a probe, which made short work of them. The three zealots and probe came charging into my main. They took out my first sunken and were heading for my mineral line when the tentacles from my second sunken, along with a handful of lings, held them back. They retreated, and I threw down a creep colony to replace the sunken I'd lost. Before it had fully morphed however, another group of zealots joined by a dragoon returned. Escorted by the zealots, the dragoon picked several drones off before 12 newly hatched lings and the newly morphed sunken dispatched the group. In no time at all the drones had been replaced.
I morphed another dozen lings and began heading towards 1BP's main. Before my lings had barely even left my base, however, they intercepted three dragoons. 1BP attempted to dance the goons away, but I would order the lings to move to a point past the goons in a line, then have them attack so that they surrounded the goon and it couldn't run. I thouht the choice of dragoons vs. lings was a bit odd, but 1BP later explained he hit the wrong hotkey and produced goons instead of zealots in that instance.
Seeking to get on the offensive for a change, I took 18 lings and began morphing a hydra den and an evo chamber at my expansion while I moved the lings towards 1BP's main. On the way, the thought occured to me that because 1BP had kept me on the defensive, he probably had taken advantage of that to take his natural. I selected my lings and right clicked on the spot on the minimap where 1BP's natural was. The lings ran through 1BP's main, taking moderate casualties, but a full dozen strong of them arrived at his natural to find a defenseless Nexus just warping in and only a few probes sitting around. I right-clicked on the Nexus and the lings began hacking at it with their claws. 1BP's zealots and goons arrived seeking to save it, but they could not kill the lings fast enough and the last five tore the structure down. This was excellent news for me, because it meant 1BP's would be a while in getting his second geyser, and that meant late temps, which are vital to a toss. I had noticed a robotics facility while my lings sprinted through 1BP's main, however, so perhaps it wouldn't be temps that would be the main threat.
I sought to press my advantage. Another hatchery was placed, the first carapace and hydra upgrades were researched, and I began producing hydras and the occasional overlord from the three hatches that were already built. In no time at all I had 12 hydras and I took them and a dozen zerglings and marched on 1BP's base. When I arrived, I was met by perhaps 6 zealots and a dragoon. They instantly turned tail and retreated from my forces. Feeling confident, I chased them into 1BP's main. Suddenly, a trail of blue streaked out from the darkness of the fog of war to detonate among my hydralisks and zerglings. A reaver! I marched on the sluglike creature with my forces. The powerful scarabs wreaked havoc, however, and my entire force was decimated. My last hydralisk, fortunately, managed to eliminate the reaver with its dieing volley of spines.
My hatcheries had not been idle during this time, however, and even as my last hydra was killed I had another dozen marching across the bridges of Styx towards 1BP's main. They got there and were met again by zealots and dragoons. Like last time, however, the real threat was hidden. Just as it seemed my hydras were going to drive back the Protoss forces, crackling lightning arced over them, bursting at least half in showers of blood and gore. The guilty templar skulked off, having foiled my attack very successfully.
As most people do when frustrated, I decided to bang my head against the wall even harder. I placed a fourth hatchery at my main bringing my total to five and cranked even more hydras. When I had two dozen I again moved towards 1BP's base, thinking I'd break through this time for sure. Wrong again. En route my hydras ran into what was probably an equal number of zealots. Being ranged attackers however, my hydras had a slight upper hand. They looked as if they would win, when I saw a shuttle glide over the water to the mainland and drop a reaver well out of hydra range. A pair of scarabs later, and the fight was pretty much over. The only consolation was that I had foiled my opponents attack.
Ok. The hydras clearly aren't going to break through. But that's not going to stop me. I'll just make more, master tactician that I am. I begin producing even more massive amounts of hydras than before. I take the mineral only expansion to the north of my main and saturate it, and also place two poorly positioned sunkens there. 1BP flies a shuttle laden with a reaver over my natural at this point, but my three sunkens in a triangular shape totally cover my worker line so the shuttle moves on. When I have thirty-six hydras, I decide its time to try to attack again. I move out and get to my opponents base when I am met by a small pack of zealots. I chase them, only to be led into range of a PERFECTLY positioned cannon behind the curve in the cliff of my opponents base. The cannon strikes my hydras with ease, but they are powerless to retaliate. As they mill around seeking to get around to the cannon, what else but storm strikes, decimating the hydra ranks. My swarm keeps on coming however, and the lightning has to crackle multiple times before the slavering hydras are quieted. While he was storming, 1BP showed off his excellent micro and building placement by stalling me with clumps of zealots, forcing my hydras to stand under fire from the cannon and also making them better targets for well placed storms. The last 8 or so hydras are mopped up by the zealots.
All right. It's fairly obvious by now that 1BP has my number. Mass hydras won't cut it. Finally I get some tech and morph a lair. I also get the second carapace upgrade. When the lair completes I start a spire, making hydras all the time. When the spire is halfway finished I save up 900 gas and then after the spire is completed I morph 8 mutas and begin the air attack upgrade. A scouting drone reveals 1BP just starting to morph a Nexus at the mineral only expansion south of his main. Before I can deal with it, however, 12 zealots, a pair of reavers, and a pair of temps assault my mineral only expansion. The temps and reavers obliterate my hydralisk defenders, but my mutas come to the rescue. 1BP hadn't noticed my spire(I don't think), so they were to a degree a surprise. I right clicked the lead temp and shift-right clicked the one trailing it and before a single storm was cast both were dead. The mutas then killed the pair of shuttles, followed by the reavers and the zealots, which kamikazed themselves on the sunkens at my expansion.
My mutas moved on to 1BP's fledgling mineral only expansion and kill about half of the probes before being killed themselves by well placed storms. I had hatched another eight in that time however, and they headed towards 1BP's natural, swiftly dodging the newly warped archon that moved to intercept them. When they arrived, however, they met a pair of cannons and a scout. I ordered them to kill the cannon to the right of the Nexus, followed by the scout. I then had the remaining three hold position over the geyser(the minerals were mined out). It wasn't long, unfortunately, before archons moved in and eliminated the mutas.
With the dawn of the archon, the reign of the muta was over. I began producing mass hydras once again along with some lings to slow down the archons. In a few moments, however, a scouting muta saw an assembly of archons, zealots, and dragoons across the river from my main. Hmm. This wasn't good. I began arraying my defense forces and morphed an extra sunken or two when I had the cash. Soon, however, the Protoss Legions moved in. They struck in between my mineral expansion and main, dividing my forces. 1BP's goons began using thier long range to kill the drones at my mineral only expansion while avoiding the poorly placed sunkens there. With my main and natural dried up, that effectively killed my income.
The rest of the army smashed my main force of hydralings without so much as slowing down, and headed into my main. The 3/2/1 archons and zealots vaporized my 0/2 ground troops almost as an afterthought, and took out my defending sunkens with minimal loses. My hatches were reduced to piles of vicious goo, and I knew it was over. With a great quote 1BP let me know the game was over. With a gg and a sigh I surrendered to 1_Brave_Peon after a game well played.
Lessons Learned
-When something clearly isn't working, don't run it into the ground. Especially as Zerg, take advantage of the ability to switch production focuses on a dime. Predictability=Smackdown.
-Speed and ability beat brute strength. I enjoyed more success using my lings' and mutas' speed to hurt my opponent then using my sluggish hydras' brute strength.
-Out resource your opponent as zerg, or you are in trouble.
The Score
As usual, comments comments. Criticism, advice, whatever, its all good.
It felt good to do a BR after so long. I've been kept really busy with school, but I had a 5 day weekend essentially so I had time to do one. No YRM graphics, no CB writing, but its still good IMHO.
