| Protoss vs Zerg; X'Ds~Grrrr... style | | | Author: | | | IP: | XXXX | | Date: | 11/15/99 10:11 | | Game Type: | Starcraft | | Labels: | none | | Report Rating: , # of Ratings: 1, Max: 7, Min: 7 Lifetime Rating for [^^]Matt: 7.0000 | | Being cooped up with a cold, and having nothing much better to do, I decided to try my hand at ladder. The first game I played was an extremely easy game, in which I faced a Protoss player who used a Gateway-Forge build order. I easily took him out with a standard 3 hatch Hydralisk rush. Score one for the good guy ;). The next game I played wasn't extremely difficult, but it had it's moments. So I'm going to report on the better of the 2 =]. For all of you who like pictures, I was at my screen limit, so I was unable to take them :(

Pre/Early Game
After several attempts, I finally found a game titled 1020+++ followed by some Ascii characters. I join, and am greeted by "hi ^^;;". I greet him back, and we exchange good luck's. I random and he picks Zerg during the countdown. I spawn as Protoss at the 12:00 position, he lands as Zerg at the 3:00 position. Upon seeing his Overlord, I decided it was time to give the X'Ds~Grrrr... early expansion strat a whirl. I do the usual 8 Pylon 10 Gateway opening, but forgo a 2nd Gate. Upon scouting him, I saw he had laid 3 Hatcheries down before his pool, I sent my first 2 zealots to him, and took out 4 or 5 Drones, he had to use his Drones to kill my Zealots.
Many people don't realize how much it hurts to kill Zerg Drones in the early game. It really does hurt bad, especially if they lose 3 or 4. This is because they have to spend extra larvae on drones which could have been combat units. Not to mention they already lose Drones when they build structures. Back at home, I continue with my 2nd and 3rd Pylons, building Zealots and Probes all the while. When I hit 22 control, I begin sending a Probe to my natural, and begin a Nexus at 24 control. As I am transferring my probes to my newly constructed Nexus at my natural, he sends 8 Zerglings at me, having 5 of them engage my 3 Zealots, while 3 run into my main base Probes, trying to cause damage. He killed 1 probe, and I knew I was ahead at this point. At around 45 control, I slap my 2nd Gateway down and begin Assimilators at both of my Geysers. I begin the +1 weapons upgrade, which is essential when fighting Zerglings with Zealots early.
Mid Game
As soon as my Cybernetics Core completes, I put a Citadel of Adun down. As soon as my Citadel finishes, I begin both the Leg Enhancement upgrade as well as a Templar Archives. My Archives completes, and I begin researching Psi Storm, and build 2 High Templar from my 2 Gateways, and train another Zealot in my third. My scout Probe was still sitting at his natural expansion, with no expansion attempt made by him. I was suspicious, and sent out another Probe to scout the other spots. I found nothing. That's when I saw a group of 20 or so Zerglings and 14-16 Hydralisks grouping to attack.
Psi Storm was not going to finish in time, but I fended with my +1 Zealots, taking heavy losses. I laid down my 4th and 5th Gateway, and began expanding to my mineral only natural. I tried harrassing him with my 8 Zealots that were left-over from his attack, but was driven back by 8 1-0 Hydras and a walled off Sunken Colony. I was now continuously pumping Zealots and High Tempar from 6 Gateways. As soon as I had a "small" force of 16 1-1-0 Zealots and 3 High Templar armed with Psi Storm, I began marching toward's his base. I finished level 2 weapons on the trek to his base, and seeing he still had no expansion, just patrolled in and leveled his base, casting an odd Psi Storm or 2 when I needed. He leaves without a word.
Lessons Learned
While this wasn't a terribly difficult game, there are some important things I learned/he didn't execute:
The early expansion strategy is quite good if you can manage to hold early attacks
He never even *attempted* to expand. Everyone knows that Protoss beats Zerg for cost, when Protoss outresources you, you're asking for a beating. Add that to the fact he never built more than 14 or so drones.
If you act like you're a Korean, they won't disconnect on you =]
Hopefully, my next report will feature pictures and a closer game.
And that's all she wrote =]
