Crystal Clear

This will be a Battle Report/Map Strategy post.

Crystallis is a small map with a vast field of minerals separating you from your opponent. The gas geysers are mixed in the mineral fields. You basically have to mine a path to get to your gas.

Here is a picture of the map:

The “1,2,3” at each start point represents the mineral patches to mine from to get to your gas the quickest. The “A,B,C” path shows a way a protoss player can mine a path through to cannon the opposing player’s gas; the “A,B,C” path requires the bottom start location. ( A,B,C quick cannon strat is not detailed in this report, but you can see the potential)

----------------------------------------------------

I joined the game having played on this map before and having the knowledge of the paths through the mineral fields. I selected protoss and drew the top start spot. My opponent selected terran and started on the bottom. Terrans own this map because of tanks, unless a protoss player can deny them gas.

My basic strategy was to get to gas before my opponent, get a shuttle out to cannon or harass his gas collection. You must micro your workers to focus on the key mineral patches first.

Here I have the probes mining only from the first patch that leads to my gas.

Each patch on has 56 minerals which is 8 mining trips

Here is my probes moving on to the next mineral patch in the path. The idea is to keep microing your probes to focus on the desired patches that clear the path to the gas.

Here the probes are working on the last patch between them and the gas.

As soon as the path is cleared the probes should be moved to mine the patches closer to the nexus, like this.

About the time, you finish your path, you have enough minerals for a pylon; get it then warp the assimilator. You need to have 5+ workers on gas to start with because it is so far away from the nexus; now my gas is going.

I warped in a Gateway, then a cyber core. I made 1 zealot to patrol my area, looking for any floating barracks. I got the Robotics Facility going and got the shuttle built as well as my forge. The warping building is the support bay.

I loaded a probe in the shuttle to scout and hopefully cannon of some gas. The opponent did not have any gas production at his closest geyser, so I cannoned it. Just one cannon to make him work for it and to give me warning that he is making a go for it.

I moved on to the bottom gas geyser; he had just cleared a path to it. I tried to warp in a cannon but misplaced my pylon. So I warped in another pylon when the marines showed up. He had just finished his refinery. I went back to my main with the shuttle to get my Reaver and a Dragoon to stop his gas as well as his marines. He immediately surrenders when he realizes he will not be getting any gas today.

This picture is right after I popped my reaver/dragoon back in the shuttle. I was trying to warp the cannon when he quit.

----------------------------------------------------

I had played a game on this map for a tournament match, a few months ago, which is what caused me to study the map so closely to discover these paths within the mineral patches. I was surprised that my opponent did not question my ability to get gas so quickly. I would have gladly given him the information that I am sharing here today.

Crystallis is a lame map, and this is a lame strat, but it works unless of course you opponent knows the paths too. I have seen players try to mine a path through to rush you with their low level units. Just get goons and cannons to stop any advancement through the mineral field.

I do not recommend the Crystallis map in any way. However, if any one ever challenges you to play on it, you are now armed with the information to exploit the map.
