Set Up
This tourney took place on Saturday Dec. 4 at Metrocenter in Phoenix, Arizona. There were ten computers in all. Two sets of five residing as two sides of an octogon set-up. These were the "special" computers and were roped off just for us. Later we would learn that "special" is not always good. Although the keyboard rested at desk level, we were confined to using bar stools. Nothing quite like sitting 2 feet above the keyboard (For a visual, imagine you knees at keyboard level). We would also only use a total of six computers to allow us a little room for a mouse.... mind you, "Little room". I must commend the tourney organizers though, this appears to be a large improvement from how they started.
Contestants
Attending was a list of notibles. Ranging from Maynard (btw- "Maynard transfer" was coined by Zileas commenting on a game Maynard had played and was picked up by all of the sites), Agent911, IN-BoB, Geno-the-Feared, Maven, two former ]no clan[ members, currently [S]Mass and [S]Br@d, a relatively unknown, St_Kevin..!!, a few other and myself. There were three main groups, Agent, Maven, and IN-BoB were sort of aside on their own, they had flown from Seattle together. Maynard and two friends that had driven from El Paso. The last group was gathered around Geno attentively listening as he gave his opinions quite openly on tournaments, players, and clans.
1st Round
My first match was against #@Howdy@# or close to that. he was about 12 and was the only attendee who brought his mother along. From the look on her face, she wasn't expecting us, or rather 20 year old college students. ;-). When beginning we had to agree on a map. He turned down temple because it "is too big" and he wanted a 'a' map which he later declared as Ashrigo. For those unfamiliar with Ashrigo (Like me), it is a rather large(196x196?) map with starts at all four corners. The middle consists of many ramps and wandering paths leading between bases.
I did as I was told and chose Protoss. I was advised against choosing random by every player I respect so I figure they must know something. At the last second the "kid" chooses zerg. UGH~! My worst matchup by far, and he was one of those players who play one map and switch to zerg at the last second. It was beginning to look like my comments about getting knocked-out in the first round by some unknown 12 year old were coming true.
I scouted on my 7th probe trying to get a feel for the map. I eventually found him at the last place, bottom right. I had warped in at top right and went for a conservative 2 gate build until I found him. He had a den and was 1/2 done with his lair. GREAT, he's going lurker against toss. Usually this isn't a good idea for the zerg and I was feeling a little better. I tried to get a little more recon, but 1 sunken cut that short. I decided to rush with my 6 zeals and see if I could get there before the lurkers. When I got there I Was greeted by 4 too many sunkens. With the aid of 2-4 lings and a couple hydra, I was forced to withdraw. Leaving me with 3 badly hurt zeals and 1 "good" one.
My next move, was to build a couple cannons at home and then to cannon his choke. Thankfully he still didn't have lurkers, so I had my zeals escort the probe to his ramp and went to work. I actually built the cannons on my plateau... well he let me. ;-) I also began rallying goons and expanded. I then got my observery and ran his base over. I offered a gg and only got a "yea", when the last building fell, he wasn't eliminated. Great I though... I sent a observer over the middle blackness and found a occupied island. Fortunately there were no pools, or sunkens, or spores, only a handfull of drones. 1 minute later my 1-1 probes amde short work of it with a cleaver probe drop. lol... sarcasm rules.
Noted from first round:
.. mouse SUCKS was the general consensus. There were many
comments on the first 4 probes going to one mineral
patch
.. Maven eliminated by [S]Mass on Dire by a combined
hydra/lurker drop with a nice follow-up.. mavens
forces were securing an island at the time. "Divide
and conquer"
.. Geno-the-Feared eliminated by St_Kevin..!! with mass
hydra/lurker vs. Geno's lings and muta. On Geno's side
he did have trouble with control of the mouse, but
Kevin played hellagood.
.. Maynard was a winner, big surprise there. I only
caught the end, but it was like a computer. He
finished a floating CC with 24 or so scouts from
different directions. It was like a cat playing with
a mouse. He is like a freaking machine.. and no, I'm
not exagerating. It was cool to watch.
