Pika_Flare and [5th]Excalibur nodded, both acknowledging the Zerg threat was to be exterminated from the much overplayed Lost Temples. Although Protoss (Excalibur) and Zerg (Pika_Flare) were rarely allies . . . what gave reason for Excalibur to be afraid to be backstabbed by such a cute Pokemon?
The opposing cerebrates were unknown except for the fact that one of them, SpIne[a-1], was of a superior Zerg strand than that of his lowly partner, Peon[a-1].
I, the omnipotent C_Time, riding in little yellow Observer float over the Temples along with RS. Anime. Below, organisms tremble before my ladder high of 1000. Pika_Flare paused the game a few minutes in, giving me time to absorb my surroundings. Pika_Flare hatches at 9:00 start spot while his partner, 5th Excalibur, teleports in a Nexus at the 12:00 start spot with his valiant probes of Aiur. Peon [a-1] hatches next to the Protoss Templar, at 3:00. The elusive SpIne [a-1] starts at the 6:00. Taking advantage of the pause, the cerebrates discuss strategies while [5th] Excalibur waits for his partner.
Five minutes later, Pika_Flare returns and squeaks an apology “Pika, pika”. (Translation: Sorry, I was on the phone). =)
The game unravels as the cerebrates go to work rather quickly. Sp|ne [a-1] goes for the early hatchery, before everyone. Peon [a-1] gets the message to expand as well. Both at their natural. The cerebrates need a slight diversion so their early expand will live. The overlords have found their opponents and team Pika/Excal have found the approximate position of their threat as well. Peon sends a single drone towards Pika’s zerg main. There Peon’s creep colony spawns on Pika’s creep. This catches the attention of Pika’s drones.
“Dron-e-Mon, I choose you!” (Heh heh, I’ll stop now).
The drones damage the creep a little waiting for the spawning to finish and zerglings to kill the creep before it can morph into a sunken. The zerglings come in time, a quick alien curse and the maneuver is outflanked. The diversion has succeeded never the less, Sp|ne finishes his hatch way before Peon’s and starts concentrating on economy. Being of greater brain mass than most cerebrates, Sp|ne notices the early extractor in Pika’s base and immediately concludes that mutas will enter the battlefield very soon, but mutas from whom, Pika or Sp|ne? The Muta race begins, although Pika has the early start, Sp|ne has a fully running expansion.
After the creep is destroyed on Pika’s creep, Excalibur gathers three zealots and heads towars’s Peon’s territory as Peon’s hatch at his natural just finishes. The four zerglings guarding the expansion are quickly dispatched as the brave zealots head towards the main. Overwhelming drones and two zerglings rush at the zealots as the warriors of Aiur gasp at the sheer number but stand defiantly despite the overrun. Many drones die, like fly stains they are squished against the holy soil of the Temples, but due to some sort of micro to Peon’s part, the zerglings and eight drones survive and the brave zealots evaporate to Toss heaven. (Bless those souls, sniff, sniff).
Pika_Flare is going defensive until his can get his mutas out. Sp|ne is teching hard towards his mutas, determined to get them out before the zerg scum who betrayed them and allied with the Protoss filth. Above, in my little yellow observer, I cheer [5th] Excalibur on. Excal gathers units, at this point he possess the biggest army by far, with a combo of zealots/goons. Pika starts building 2-3 spore colonies inside his main, anticipating mutas as well.
5th Excal, lacking scouting, stays defensive until his partner gets what he needs. A couple of cannons are build at the choke along with all his units. Sp|ne indeed gets mutas first and hatches 3 immediately, the mutas heads towards Toss territory. Peon hatches 12 zerglings for support. Sp|ne’s mutas take a look at 5th Excal’s defence and army and cowers.
“Down with Pikachu!”
The zerglings and mutas gather near Pika’s main. At this point neither Excal nor Pika have expansions. Sp|ne has his natural in full throttle and Peon has 6 drones mining at his natural. The mutas, which are now twelve mutas, attack and the zerglings advance. Pika also has mutas at this point. Peon’s zerglings fight to get to the spore colonies but are guarded by six to eight mutas. Sp|ne’s mutas advance but are repeled by two spores and another newly hatched spore.
5th Excal sits in his nexus pondering if he should just let the zerg kill each other, but Toss honor and commitment overwhelm him as he sends his available troops to help. While the slow goons take their time, the mutas and zerglings silmultaneously attack. After much heated battle, no zerglings are left and Sp|ne retreats 4 remaining mutas back to his main. The goons and zealots arrive late but are in time to get a message to Pika_Flare: COUNTER! NOW! Down with Peon!
Fifteen goons and four zealots gather outside Peon’s natural’s choke. Pika is badly damaged in terms of eco, his drones have diminished to 6. Despite this, Pika is convinced that this attack will win them the game. Instead of wasting larvea for drones, mutas hatch and eight gather with the toss army. A bloody battle ignites. The turning point is when Excal shows up with corsairs which ends muta support from Sp|ne.
Peon’s main is falling, but Peon puts up a great fight and Excal finds it hard to distinguish the Zerg flame.
Peon: “AVENGE MEEEEeeeeeee, ack, ack. . . . arg . . . .oof.”
Sp|ne expands to his mineral only and marches bravely up Pika’s ramp with twelve hydras chanting “zerg free radio” on top of their lungs in salute to their fallen ally. The hydras rip into Pika’s base as Excal’s troops are in too much of a frenzy over at Peon’s to help Pika. Nevertheless, some goons march to aid. Goo litters the creep of Pika_Flare as he falls to the vengeance of Sp|ne.
Circleling the Temple, I suddenly realize the calamity Excal is in and how cunning Sp|ne had been. Everything has played into the mysterious cerebrate’s hands . . . err, stubby tentacles. SpIne with his main and TWO FULLY running expansions. Excal realizes this and quickly raises a defense of cannons at his natural, trying to expand. Sp|ne’s first attack renders Excal senseless. Using his hydras to rip the cannons and detectors, Sp|ne’s lurkers rip the expansion asunder. Excal raises the white flag and surrenders, sparing the life of the probes he still had.
Good game or to be continued? (???) Anyways, dissapointed that the toss had lost, I pull my little yellow observer away and take my tail outta there before I get whooped as well.
Lessons Learned
1) This report took me 3 weeks to write, but at least this was a good game.
2) If Excal just had one expansion he could have won
3) Despite hints and whispers by me and RS anime (the 2nd obs) Excal did not get storm!! =(
