Heartcutter - Terran 6:00
The Dark - Terran 9:00
Yesterday was not a good day for me. I lost 3 games. One was due to having bad sound (DT's killed my comsat and I had no warning whatsoever). Another game I managed to trap one of my SCV's behind the mineral line with a bad depot placement, and thanks to my being pissed off about this, was killed by a 6ling rush. The final straw was losing to carrier tech (?). He cannoned in and I scanned and couldnt figure out what he was doing. I bunkered in, researched siege, built towers and when my first tank arrived, he already had a carrier. Screwed up game.
Now this was the final game of the night. Terran v. Terran. Once again I did the standard 8depot, rax, rax, 3 more depot and an academy. I had the standard plan of getting M&M and knock on his door.
So I get to his ramp with 10-12 marines and some meds, and he has the perfect bunker placement. No go. I stand around and get shot at for a little while, and shortly decide to pack it in and go home to the top of my ramp. This was a very good thing. So I get the factory going and try and figure on a plan of attack. Maybe wraiths, maybe tanks, can't decide. What's very neighborly of my opponent is that he makes that decision for me.
I see at the bottom of my cliff, the vulture. No make that 8 vultures. Damn! My marines are going to be shredded! I immediately have 2 bunkers thrown up at the choke and kept all of my marines at the top. If those bastards get past the perimiter, I lose. No question about it. I don't panic, however. I set all of my marines to hold position and of course he comes up the ramp. The marines shred a couple of them and he backs off.
I need tanks. I hear mines being laid. I'm not going anywhere fast this game. So my short term plan is to get tanks to shell those little bastards, expand to my natural, and get ghosts to kick his butt.
Factory is researching siege, new CC is mostly built when I hear that hydraulic noise of siege tanks being set up. Whoa! I scan and see 4 sieged tanks outside my base with a bunch of vultures, and an engineering bay floating above the whole mess. I'm kind of laughing on the inside about how awkward this looks, but at the same time figuring 'Ah shit, how are you going to get out of this one?' My first siege tank rolls off the line, and stays a healthy distance from the ledge.
His floating bay allows the tanks to open fire and shred the bunkers. This is really funny now. I pull my marines out of the bunkers, and get them to safety (medics kept really busy). I start rolling a tank toward the ledge, but as I'm siegeing, the tanks plow my tank. This is getting bad. I'm about ready to start using my new CC like his bay, but I scan instead and reveal a WHOLE lotta tanks and vultures. We're talking almost filling my natural expansion with enemy troops. Ack.
Necessity is the mother of invention, and I need to get a solution. I take my new CC and float it as far south as it can go. I begin a starport, and then send the new CC to the bottom right island. I had to just hope he didnt see it in time to react. As I siege up the 3rd supporting tank, he attacks.
Damn that bay! Damn it to hell!
My marines are quickly becoming puddles of goo with the onslaught and move back yet again. The vultures poke their heads up the ramp again, and for their efforts, my tanks poke them in the eyes. Concussion grenades firing, they aim for the tanks. Thats the stuff....
With a taunt of:
(You vultures git your bitch asses back in the kitchen and go make me some pie!!!), the hallucinating marines make one big vulture pie. The result of this little incursion was a couple dead infantry, one dead tank, and lots of dead vultures.
My first wraith came online and all of a sudden, I can do something about that ebay. I move a little closer and lay some smack on it (as much smack as you can lay on a 1250 HP building with one wraith). He's also got a missile turret there, so I can't get too close. Further scans reveal that he's just beginning to expand. This is a good thing. I get a dropship building.
Onto the little island in the corner. I didn't waste any time in getting SCV's built from it, and the first 3 that came off the line put up missile towers. After the first 2 were complete, his 3 wraiths came for a visit on the island and promptly died. The success here made me want the other island, and I began another CC that I eventually floated to the top left spot.
Damn I had a load of gas and minerals at that point. I could see what he spent his on. I knew what I needed to break this siege. BC's. I ordered up the Sci Facility, 2 armories, another starport (for a total of 3) and a control tower. Once the dropship completed a run to the island to drop off some fighting units, I had it repaired (it took some fire from some goliaths) and loaded with 4 marines and a tank. We were going to go turbo newbie.
So I repair and fly out. The 2nd CC is en route to the second island (they fly sooo slow) and I contemplate whether to use this drop for defense on the island, or go offence. Offense won out and I sieged up on his cliff. It was tasty. Lots of dead SCV's, not to mention the attention factor. I had a wraith there for anti-air and things were peachy. I also scanned the other patches and saw nothing, which meant this was really screwing up his production. I fly the dropship home (this pilot survived the war. Give her a big fat medal), and start up on the BCs.
The one thing that was making me really happy was the fact that he had all this supply and minerals all tied up on units which were doing NO good. As long as the ramp held, he'd get nothing and like it.
The little turbo newbie group was destined to die. I knew this. Shortly after they blew up the refinery, two dropships landed a pair of tanks and 4 goliaths (with charon). The wraith was the proud recipient of the charon information, and promptly died. His tanks just rolled over the infantry and the tank (I think he had big factory upgrades).
Battle Cruiser reporting...
The first two BC's I built were immediately sent to my top left island expansion. They arrived in the nick of time to see a dropship drop two tanks on the island. As the tanks sieged up, the one new SCV ran straight for the tanks. He was hit, but lived. The two BC's then came over the beaches and straight for the dropship.
I typed 'Hi'. At this point it looked as if the tables were turning. A little short work on the island by the BCs secured it for me, and the missile towers went up. This was BIG. I had 2 expansions running. He was scrambling to catch up from my gains. The starports were running full time.
I'm going to abbreviate the end of this. He basically went ghosts and heavy goliaths. I went back to marines and BC's. He tried to expand twice more, which I crushed each time promptly. He was forced out of my natural by BCs, and I expanded there. He called GG after I smoked his last goliath.
Lessons learned
** Expansions are king. You expand while preventing your opponent, and you will win.
* If the vultures and tanks broke the perimiter, I would have lost. No question about it.
* BCs will break goliaths. I've been on the other end of this argument enough times to finally figure this out.
* Float your CC's dammit!
