To Fear or Flare the Eternal Abomination...
O Ye Wretched Scarab'
It was dawn on a Tuesday morning, about 2,388 A.D. while the Terran defensive stonghold "Alpha Six" prepared another offensive in hopes to remove the alien toss' temple manifestation upon the Due North mountainscape.
It was apparent to both forces that the centrally located temple, while not "Lost" catered to underground Vespene sources capable for not only planetary production of advanced technology, but increased capacity reserves for Terran Yamato plutonium and protoss arbiter fuel.
The former would allow merit to Fleet Commander Duke Lehnard's proposal of a less emphasis on the stalwart marine and increased production of the new heavily armored BattleCruisers. In contrast, intelligence reports from ghost espionage personel discovered protoss plans to increase the cloaking field on the arbiter's diameter, and make further changes to the ship's slow firing cannon.
As a result of the prized resources present underground and the dire need for Colonel Ratcliff to expel the protoss threat, he had planned an early attack force consisting of twelve courageous marines to travel from their Southernmost planescape to the protoss encampment.
Specifically, Ratcliff ordered the force to assault the Northernmost-toss chokepoint in hopes of breaking into the harvesting probes that could spell problems for the always potent toss technology.
Upon waiting for reports of their scouting scv concerning the initial defenses of the sought after "choke," Corporal Green instructed the privates to engage in an initial hit and run tactic to displace the six zealots that were guarding the encampent.
As the marines moved into position, the wisely instructed zealots did not fall into the trap of coming out of their choke, but rather moved near the uppermost land to better converge on hapless marines that should enter.
Sure, such a tactic could expose intelligence information concerning toss tech-routes, it would not be such a risk when compared to a complete loss of six fully shielded zealots.
The instinctual grasp to revaluate the situation gripped the Corporal's mind incessantly, but he was far from showing even a hint of cowardice in the eyes of his supporting marines, that were obviously looking for some long needed action.
Inside, he knew of his enemies..and the sheer destructive power of 4 zealots on a bunker..and his previous squad's lucky shooting...spree, but this was different...
They were not clothed within a rectangular granite box...no, all they had was their armor which was actually made from some warehouse hull...and the zealots attacked with more than mere knives..their wrath was supernatural to say the least...
Regardless of his apprehensions...Green trudged in...hoping for a lucky flanking manuever---while the marines followed...
Bloody torsoes soon littered the mountainside hill as the zealots converged on the hapless marines without a shred of mercy....in fact the 6 zealots, aptly termed --even considered following the fleeing 4 marines back to their base..
The option was struck nil however...because the protoss conclave was preparing for a killing strike rather than a quick expansion....death was planned in the form of a scarab---and it was planned imminently.
At the "Alpha-Six" fortress, Commander Lehnard, continued the ordering of a 2 barracks milita...knowing the versatile nature of marines and the latent power of stimpack...in addition he decided upon dual enginerring bays for further upgrade benefits and a solitary turret at their own choke.
Time would tell in the form of satellite sweep, what the Terran force would plan in the future.
Assistants of Lehnard politely pleaded with the Commander to quickly switch to factory production, emphasizing the efficiency of the spider mine. He would have nothing of it however, going the predictable root against the toss was just what they were expecting....and how he hated the dragoons---for that's what he was planning to counter...
The Comstat sweep revealed protoss technology akin to the grossly feared "reaver drop." It seemed that an attack was evident and Lehnard's orders had required further production of Marine and Medics with stimpack and optic flare. The latter technology fix was considered close to useless since all enemies quickly grew immune to its effects by using "spotters" that were always around.
He denied requests for turret construction, since he was well aware that a protoss shuttle could literally land on top of a turret and still be able to drop its cargo before dying...accordingly, lehnard exclaimed "Screw the Longbolts."
Rather, he instead ordered marine and medic formations to line up within the middle of their walled off base formation so they could accurately respond to the scarab threat.
He was deathly afraid of the possibility of a zealot stampede through his choke....but needed to take the risk while factory production began full steam with 2 machine shops...infantry was abruptly halted in hopes of fooling the toss into defensive over-indulgence.
The inevitable drop loomed over the horizon and was calculated to drop at the left of the mineral pile where the scv's worked busily...granted they were the slow producers when compared to other races, but they met minimal needs..It was for this reason..Lehnard was quick to preserve their health and carted them to the chokepoint--with a sense of self-brilliance as he noticed the dual-prong benefit of halting a zealot rush, by clogging the choke and also avoiding the reavers...
---
The Shuttle's computerized motion system detected marine movement to its northwest landing point and decided to bait the milita 300 feet east from the original dropping schedule....if need be the reavers could be picked up, pending an unsuccessful drop...and besides all that was in their way was a handful of weak marines and useless "nurse" hominids.
Things did not go as planned however....
The reavers were dropped successfully, but were both quickly blinded by an obtrusive flaring device--formerly thought of as primitive and crude.
As a result of its subroutines....the shuttle's computer requested its trafficking controls to employ a spotter mode to crush the infantry's charge. Mission successful. 8 marines vanquished, and 2 medics killed. Depot destruction commenced...
Lehnard well aware of his losses and the apparent vanishing of half his infantry, nontheless ordered is awaiting troops to the left of the command center to attack with the same orders.
The first medic, attempted to ignite the spotter's computerized guidance system, but was quickly mutilated by a sole scarab. All that was left was a rare male medic's optic device. Again, Lehnard ordered stim for the remaining 11 man milita and hoped to God the shuttle didnt focus fire the last medic...
The prayer was answered temporarily at least....with the shuttle blinded and a sudden upgrade of U-238 shells..the reavers were abolished with extreme prejudice.
Without more marines...however, Lehnard new that even with blindness the reavers could still fire back, because they were auto-defending----this grim truth made him think twice before ever utilizing "optic flare"...again...what a weak device he pondered...it seems that its only good use would be against observers...if that was the case--this was his last attempt at delaying machine shops.
As the scvs...scattered back to work, and tank/vulture production commenced....Lehnard directed a comstat scan at the most prized area.....the center of the Lost Temple.
What he found made him nauseous, frustrated and demoralized..a group of 4 dragoons soon to be join by 2 more...an obvious containment strategy...
The thing was.....Lehnard was short on Machine power...and toss were likely expanding...how the hell could he prevent the goons, and to top it off a temp archives was revealed by a secondary sweep.
*********
Lehnard's fears turned into hopes that the protoss were creating the dark templar...for at least he could counter the assassins with detection...But the truth was clear...the lightbenders would not face the temple nor protect it...a more grim, sinister, omnipotent being was coming to the fringe....
None other than the bringer of storm....the bringer of hate..the vanquisher of souls....the most brutal weapon ever known to Terran infantry..
