Welcome |
|
It was about 2 a.m in the morning (evening?) a tuesday in early march back in good (c)old sweden,
when me and my friend Meph were trying to get one last 2on2 game before going to bed.
We started a game and Djingins~Khan soon joined. However, 5 minutes went by and
noone else showed up. We decided to go for a 1on1 instead, and i offered to be the one to observ.
The overplayed map Lost Temple was naturally gladly accepted as the battleground by both
contestants. For those of u who doesn't know the map u can take a look below.

Both players let fate decide their race and wished each other good luck as the countdown begun.

Build up
|
ended up with the zerg at the 9 o'clock starting position,
while found four, more or less, motivated probes around his Nexus at 3 o'clock.
started with pylon on 8 followed by gateway on 10, then sending a probe on a
scouting mission to the startposition at 6 o'clock. Meanwhile,
is mutating all his larvas into drones and uses the extractor trick to get
10/9 supply. His overlord is slowly moving towards 6 o'clock, hoping to get some early recon about the race and
tactics of his opponent. When then 10:th drone spawns, he sends it to the
natural expansion and mutates it into a hatchery. This was shortly afterward followed by a spawningpool and an
extractor on about 12 and 13. In 's base, an assimilator and another pylon and
gateway are starting to warp in. A zealot from the first gateway pops out and quickly
moves to the ramp leading up to his base, hoping to intercept a possible scouting worker from
. The scouting probe from met up
with 's overlord at 6, and now both players know the race of their opponent.
After receiving this knowledge, immediately starts a cybergenetic core and sends
his probe to scout
's base. however, doesn't send any
drone on a scouting mission, which probably means he's going for a preselected strategy.
The probe is greeted by one sunken and a few lings and dies while trying to
flee the sunken. adds two more sunkens and a few lings, probably fearing a
fast zealot attack.

|
Corsair rush
|
However, hasn't got any thoughts about intitation an attack, only two zealots
are currently defending the ramp. He
has been saving all his minerals and gas to be able to construct a stargate as soon as the cybercore finishes.
As the stargate is being built,
upgrades his main hatchery into Lair and starts an extractor at his natural
expansion. Unknowing of the danger that is upon him, happily morphs more drones
and lings as fast as possible. When the stargate is up, immediately begins
constructing a corsair while reinforcing his dangerously small army of zealots guarding the ramp. At the time
the first corsair arrives, mutates one of his drones into a spire, hoping to
catch the protoss opponent off guard without any airdefence. also sends a couple
of lings to find out what is up to, but the zealots blocking the ramp prevents
the lings from receiving any valuable information.
When two corsairs have been built they set course towards the island at 5 o'clock and then to the 6 o'clock starting
position. finds a patrolling overlord and kills it - the hunt is on. The
corsairs then continue
straight into the heart of 's main base and find three more defenceless overlords.
feels the seriousness of the situation (and the slowly growing smell of toasted
meat) and
therefor morphs both a hydralisk den and an evolutionchamber to stop the ongoing barbecue.
 When another
ol has been shot down, two eggs hatches and out comes two mutalisks. They try to distract the corsairs to buy some
time for the hydraden to complete.
But has another corsair on his way to
base, and together the three corsairs easily shoot down the mutalisks, only losing one of their own kind. The
remaining two corsairs resume the electrocution of the overminds sweethearts. The lack of overlords prevents
from morphing any hydras, and the corsairs continue patrolling the air.
Finally,
morphs two creep colonies into spores and can take a breather as the immediate
threat has been dealt with. With agony the corsairs retreats to the center of the battleground.
|
U name it - Meph's got it
|
The corsairs were able to set back for a while, but not enough for
to be assured of victory. However, has not
been idle during the fight, a citadel, a templar archives and
a fleet beacon has just warped in. It looks like is going for a combination of
zealots, templars and
disruption(aka gay)-web. He has also just begun the construction of a Nexus at his natural expansion.
is definately back on track
and has the advantage of a larger economic flow from his two bases than
from his singel main.
puts down two more hatcheries and prepares for the microintensive
strategy of massing hydras, hydras and more hydras... and occasionally a couple of lings for the hydras to play with,
just so they'll keep up the mood and their heads.
continues his tech and warps in a Robotics Facility followed by a Support bay.
Only a couple second after this, (to my big surprise) a carrier pops out of the stargate. It looks like
has abondoned the thoughts of going templars and zeals. A lonely probe
confirms this theory by adding another two stargates - is going for mass carriers!
Though, it seems like he has been having some trouble deciding what unit to focus his production on.
Almost all possible buildings has been warped in, but neiter a templar, darktemplar nor a reaver has been produced.
Will his weak defence, consisting of just 14 zealots and 6 corsairs, hold out long enough for the carriers to arrive?

Hydras think they are sooo cool...
|
At the meantime, puts down a hatch at the 6 o'clock natural expansion, while
continually pumping hydras from four hatcherys.
spots the expansion with a zealot just before two creeps morph into sunken
colonies. sends a group of 9 zealots south to deal with the situation. When they
arrive they face eqaul number of zerglings and two sunkens, and charges the expansion.
sees the
opportunity to make an attack on main base, since the protoss forces are busy
destroying the new expansion. Two groups of hydras rushes straight through the holy temple ground (without saying a
singel pray! Damn those unreligious youth hooligans!) When they reach the ramp, only five zealots are present to
defend the base. zealots are easily killed bye the lethal spittle from the
seemingly rather pissed off hydras. Yeah, those hydras
really think they sooo cool, walking around spitting people right up their faces...
moves forward and starts destroying the natural expansion. At the same time
as the zealots destroy the 6 o'clock expansion the hydras make their way up the ramp leading into
's main base.
When reaching the higher ground they dont spot any defending units!
But wait a second, suddenly interceptors from 's carriers
darkens the sky above the hydras. Three carriers do their best to save the base by using their superior
range. Unfourtunately for , only one of the three carriers have had
enough time to load up the full capacity of eight interceptors. Because of the huge army of hydras and lack of
interceptors, manages to shoot down all the interceptors. The zealots
from the now demolished expansion at 6, meet more hydras at the entrance to 's
base. zealots fougth bravely, but not even the courage and resolution of
Tassador would have helped against twice as many of 's hydras.
proceeds deeper into 's main base and quickly starts razing all the buildings.
Seeing this, concedes the game with a "gg". The final scores are as follows:

What have we learnt today?
|
Well, here we are again: one person who is happy because he won, one unhappy because he lost, and one observer
going on about all the great stuff he would have done if he had played the match... know the feeling?
1. Corsair rush can be really effective against a zerg who expands fast.
If the zerg goes for lair and spire,
u are almost guaranteed to reach corsairs before he has got mutas. Of course, if he goes hydralisk den first,
the rush will probably fail. But my inadequate experience tells me that a zerg that gets his natural, quite often
goes for mutas first.
2. Not scouting your opponent can be very devastating.
Djingis~Khan would probably have discovered the early
assimilator if he had sent an early drone. A somewhat later scout would have revealed that Meph's defence was very
weak. With this knowledge, perhaps Khan would have been able to overrun Meph or atleast been able to
defend against the corsairs.
3. U need to have a distinct plan for the game.
A player named Icegod once wrote a somewhat unusual article about starcraft/broodwar strategies (it can be found
here). Instead of describing buildorders for different matchups, which can be found at any starcraft site, he focused
his article on things like handspeed, micro/macro and other stuff.
Among many things, he wrote that it's very important that u always have a plan for the game. If u
suddenly don't know what to do next, you're most likely going to lose the game because of your passivity.
In starcraft it's very important to think ahead, trying to predict your opponents moves as well as planning your
own moves. In Meph's case, it was quite obvious he couldn't decide what units to focus his production on. I think
this was what in the end made him lose the game, in spite of his advantage in the early game thanks to the succesful
corsair rush.
Well, I hope u enjoyed reading the report, I sure enjoyed writing it.
I appreciate all feedback u may have, (good and bad) so that i can improve my writing skills.
But please have in mind that this was my first battlereport. =) C'ya!
