It was 7:30pm. I was in channel nohunters. The night is almost upon us, and the hunger is starting to strike my consciousness with the dull repetitivity of a hammer. Under this constant pressure, my brain is withering away. I realize I must feed again.

CynicalMagician: I need 2+ players for a 1v1 or FFA for me to BR. Players will end up famous.

(Aside: I apologize to Dr.Evil^^ and Wisest~Yoda, because they will not actually be famous. That was a pickup line.)

Anyway. The two aforementioned players decided that they were going to give in to peer pressure and play on temple. This isn't SO bad, because Temple is arguably one of the best maps ever, but you know.. its temple... At any rate though, the countdown began and in a ferocious mega-move, Dr.Evil^^ changed his race to zerg at the last second. Wisest~Yoda was unphased by this, and stuck with random. WIth this said, I give you:

Dr.Evil^^ vs Wisest~Yoda

Scourge: Nature's Vacuum

Map: Lost Temple
SC Style: Brood War

Players:

Wisest~Yoda - 12:00 - Zerg
Dr.Evil^^ - 6:00 - Zerg

Oh wait, two other things that I should say before we begin. 1) I know Dr.Evil^^ comes up as orange even though he's yellow in the game, but yellow is too hard to read on white, and I'm too lazy to make a stylesheet. So =P. 2) This report is image intensive (about 760K). Be warned.

*yelled from the back*: Enough already! Get on with the damn BR!!
CynicalMagician: I'm working on it! Quit your whinin'!

The game opened with both players using very similar build orders, going 10/9 drone. Wisest~Yoda used this drone to make a hatchery at the bottom of his ramp, and Dr.Evil^^ built a pool. Soon after, Dr.Evil^^ scouts with another drone, and starts gathering gas. About this time, Wisest~Yoda decides that he too should build a pool, and his gets to about 90/750 when Dr.Evil^^'s is done. Hmm. However, Wisest~Yoda seems to have better cash flow, as he builds a couple creep colonies at his ramp hatchery.

About now, Dr.Evil^^ gets a lair and a second hatchery, in what appears to be a mutarush. Wisest~Yoda on the other hand, just starts his lair, and keep spawning lings from both his hatcheries. Soon he has 8, and sends them across the map to meet their destiny.

At this point things look good for Wisest~Yoda, because Dr.Evil^^ has only 2 lings, and a bunch of drones. His spire is not yet done, and so he does not have the aerial advantage. However, a forward overlord does spot the troops en route, and so Dr.Evil^^ starts a few larvae of lings. Even so, this can't help him right at the beginning of this skirmish, and is forced to take his drones off mining to attack. Using these stalling tactics, Dr.Evil^^ is able to hold off the lings til his own hatch, and they quickly destroy the foe.

This attack was worth while for Wisest~Yoda though, as he spotted Dr.Evil^^'s spire, and realized he had absolutely no air defence, aside from drone launching. (Editor's Note: Drone launching is a sport originating on Char by drunken hydralisks, where a drone is loaded up on the tentacle of a sunken and launched into the air. It has since been outlawed, but is still a common practice among the swarm when things are slow.) Drone launching is both cost-inefficient and inaccurate though, so Wisest~Yoda builds a few spore colonies to fend off wandering mutas.

However, these mutas are not to come for a little while, as Dr.Evil^^ decides to expand and defend to his natural rather than launch an offensive. By now, Wisest~Yoda also has a spire, and has begun production of everyone's favourite unit, scourge. He sends a flight of these down to scout and perhaps do some damage just as Dr.Evil^^ sends half a wing of mutas to Wisest~Yoda's main. In 30 seconds or so these mutas are driven back without taking casualties, or inflicting damage, but for now, the two hulking fleets pass each other, each blissfully unaware of the other's prescence.

The scourge have better (or worse, depending on whether or not you consider suicide for a cause good..) luck at Dr.Evil^^'s exp/main, and bomb into OL's and mutas alike. This marks the beginning of the next 5-8 minutes of the game:

In this period, there is much swearing by Dr.Evil^^ (not on screen, but probably in real life) and much laughing by me. It also turned out that I got about 25 screenshots where the scourge were the main attraction.

However, this did happen while the scourge pounded into the floating blimps and winged squealers, such as Dr.Evil^^ building up a large force of lings, and Wisest~Yoda inadvertantly giving us the true definition or laziness. First the laziness, then the lings.

That drone sat in the gas line for the whole game, never mining, and never building anything.

And now, the lings. I guess Dr.Evil^^ had gotten fed up with the scourge, and decided to counter attack. He did so with about 24 lings, and sent them straight at Wisest~Yoda's main base, where there were about 10 lings, and 2 sunkens.

While the visit lasted, there was a very bloody and gory and fun to watch battle, in which all but 1 of Wisest~Yoda's lings were killed (I named the survivor Hercules, but he died later =P), and 1 of the 2 sunkens was taken down to 40 HP.

Both players take this time to rebuild, and mass up another army, and Wisest~Yoda also finally expands to his natural. Dr.Evil^^ starts using the base that he has at his natural, and sends about 12 drones there to bulk up his economy.

About now, Wisest~Yoda starts sending wave after wave of 12-16 zerglings each at Dr.Evil^^'s natural, and although the first 2 waves get butchered by defending forces, eventually through sheer numbers Wisest~Yoda breaks through and starts picking on the drones. Many drones die, but the hatchery remains intact as a force of mutas finally arrives to chase off the offenders which are rather ugly when compared to the bronze tan that Dr.Evil^^'s lings have been blessed with.

Anyway, Dr.Evil^^ has suffered a major blow to his economy, and so decides for an unknown reason to maynard ALL of the drones at his main to his exp. There is no evidence to suggest why he didn't just rebuild, but as a BR'er, I am forced to make some guesses.

Artist's rendition of the great drone evacuation.

About now there are 3 major developements in the game that happen about the same time. 1) Wisest~Yoda has started the morphing of a greater spire, and has also started building mutas. 12 or so are on the way. 2) Dr.Evil^^ has shifted from muta/ling to hydra/lurker, and has a rather large force of them outside his base. 3) Wisest~Yoda has exp'd to the upper left island, and is starting to bring in gas from there.

Notice the blue dots behind Dr.Evil^^'s natural. They are mutas waiting to morph to guardian.

Editor's Note:Now this is where the fun begins. Because so much was happening at once, this part of the BR may seem a little confusing, but keep an open mind, and remember that all of this happens at the same time.

Anyway. In due time the guards appear, and start smashing the drones from the safety of the cliff above, so hydras can not get close enough to needle them. Many drones perish, and suddenly Dr.Evil^^'s decision to maynard all his drones does not seem like such a good one, as he has very little money coming in.

However, he does have a contingency plan. After he realized that he could not hope to win against 9 guardians with his force of hydras and lurkers, he decided to go all or nothing on Wisest~Yoda's main.

Eventually the caravan reaches its goal, and absolutely terrorizes the minimal garisson troops at Wisest~Yoda's main, taking only about 8 casualties to the 3 sunkens and few lings that were around.

However, just to make matters worse, another group of guardians starts pounding on Dr.Evil^^'s main from the west, making the total about 13 or 14. News of the asskicking that is being administered in the south of the map gets back to Wisest~Yoda's drones at his natural, raising their morale, and in a daring display of bravado, they turn on their hydralisk captors, and break free. They then run to the 3:00 start position where a hatchery is morphing. Somehow they escape the wrath of the needle spines, and make it unscathed.

This isn't really that surprising that the drones should make it ok, because Dr.Evil^^'s hydras are busy tearing down the last of Wisest~Yoda's main. In due time this razing completes, and the hydra army moves on to destroy Wisest~Yoda's expansion. Wisest~Yoda now only has the 3:00 start, and his island.

Things have taken another turn for the worse for Wisest~Yoda, as Dr.Evil^^ hatches some mutas just before his spire is destroyed. The guardians are quickly dispatched.

Now, not one to sit around contented, Dr.Evil^^ continues his rampage across the temple grounds and attacks Wisest~Yoda's 3:00 base. However, he unwisely sends drones in first, and in a brave breakout attempt, Wisest~Yoda attacks with his drones.

With the arrival of actual troops, the rebellion is put down with ease.

Things do not look very good for Wisest~Yoda at this point. He has only 2 hatcheries, 1 spore colony and a spire at his island exp, with only a few mutas for a mobile strike force. Dr.Evil^^ however, has a rather large standing army, and 2 hatcheries left, along with a couple drones.

However, Wisest~Yoda does have a good economy with his 1 base, so he begins muta production. Soon he has about 9, and he begins harassment techniques on Dr.Evil^^'s remaining buildings.

So close, and yet so far.

Each time he starts doing damage, a task force of 12 or 15 hydras shows up and puts the party down. Sometimes one of Dr.Evil^^'s mutas shows up, but they are always chased off.

So, after a few minutes of intense hit and run tactics, Wisest~Yoda eventually has enough mutas so that he can face the hydras and destroy them.

With this, Dr.Evil^^ concedes the game with a GG, and leaves. A well fought and very intense matchup comes to a close, after 45minutes of combat.

Lessons Learned

1) Scourge are annoying.
2) Keep scouting your opponent. At more than one time Dr.Evil^^ could have killed Wisest~Yoda, but he didn't know that he could, so didn't attack.
3) Build more troops than you need in ZvZ games, because it almost always comes down to who has more.

Til next time,
