In a small metal chamber somewhere below the surface of a desolate planet lay a very shaken young man. Just 2 hours ago he had been taken from the maximum security prison Quadrant 16 by a serious yet charismatic man who came there to retrieve prisoners. Soon after that he was knocked out cold and taken to this cell.
Here. What was here. Lilandri was on the reinforced titanium walls, but being surrounded by metal walls was nothing new to a hardened prisoner of murder. Lilandri was a name this man knew. He remembered it was a mining company facing rebellion from its workers when he was still free. Of course that was before Niko had come along........the man winced, deep in these thoughts.
His head still aching from the mild concussion, the man tried to retrieve his own name from any part of his mind, which at the moment felt like it was hit by a speeder. Al Slate, he came up with. This sounded foreign, and he wondered if it was actually his. before he could delve any deeper for something more substantial, two armed and armored men walked through the wall parallel to him.
“So its a force field,” Al thought.
The men grabbed him, and he noticed they had the Lilandri insignia on their green metal breastplates. They had standard pistols, but he failed to see the type or make, which would clue him in as to where he was. Al was an arms dealer for a year or so.
Deep in thought and still woozy, he did not struggle when they finally started dragging him to another room. They were arguing about something, but it registered distantly in Al’s mind, and he was not in the position to dwell on it. Finally, they reached their destination. He wondered why he was in this room and not the other one, but two words clued him in.
Mind Wipe
This was not good. Al resisted, but they pistol-whipped him in the stomach. They joked, “don’t worry, you can keep your personality, but ya don’t got much of one, ya weakling.” They had done this many times, he guessed, and as he was pushed roughly into the faded black leather chair, he wondered two things. “Why are they doing this?” and “Why leather?”
Chapter 2: The New Fighter
“As to your previous inquiries, we need you not to have any regrets or qualms about your new life. However, we kept your personality, how vacant it may be, because it keeps the crowds happy. Also, as to your question about the leather, we need the victim to be safe during all the writhing around while their thoughts are being invaded and destroyed.”
A sinister old man with an evil glint in his eyes was talking. He had done this many times too, Al guessed. This man, he thought, seemed to have a voice that fit only a person of pure evil, as the man probably knew when he took the voice modifier nano-probes into his body. Although he seemed so businesslike, the man of darkness saw that he had body armor just like the guards which he noticed guarding the exits to the dimly lit chamber which seemed to be made of titanium like everything else. His body armor was black, which was either status in this twisted place or it fit his persona. He was wearing a long black cape which went down his back and lay strewn on the ground like a dead person. Al surmised that many people were afraid of him and his evil twisted grimace that was bearing down on Al, and this probable fear was strengthened by the fact that the evil aged man had metallic-cast eyes, probably from the nano-probes.
“you are here to fight in the Tournament,” the ominous voice emanating from the aged black clad man. “It is the great Tournament. The Unreal Tournament!!”, he bellowed, and he started trembling from the force of his scream, but his synthesized voice did not waver, and he went on.
Al deduced that it was not the time to interrupt. Besides, the guards were motioning at him. Shut up, he realized they said.
“You are from Quadrant 16 in Southern Manacus?”, the old man demanded, cybernetic voice rising, but frail body falling as if it was on the verge of collapsing.
“I-I-I Thi.....”, he stammered, not sure if he was or not. They hit him with a staff, which stung a little and made his back buzz with electricity. It reminded him faintly of a cattle prod. He realized he knew that he knew weapons very well, but from very long ago. Why did he know this? They hit him again, harder, and with more electricity. He screamed, contorted into the fetal position, while his every muscle was convulsing from the shock
.
“Do not speak. We are in charge here, and we have bought your life. You fight from this day on. Your name is Altissimus, which means Highest. Your first fight will be in approximately 1 hour”, the evil man said, motioning to the guards. “Take him back”
Al lay there, in his dry but drafty metal prison. What is going to happen to me? I don’t remember anything of my life, except for my gunsmith career and some random memories when I was a little kid. Why those memories? Also, why am I fighting so soon? Do I get training? I can’t believe this is happening. I am going to die here!
Al realized he was thinking aloud. Another prisoner was knocking on the wall of his metal cell, and wherever the hand hit, the metal disappeared. So its force field, Al thought. Its not soundproof either! Al thought that last thought in his head.
“Hey man,” a young voice called out “what’d they do to you?”
“Why am I here??!! Who are you?? What is the tournament??!!”, Al cried out nervously and hopefully at the same time.
“Calm down man. Geez, your actin’ like your gonna die. Don’t worry, they don’t kill anyone in the Tournament.” “I’m a prisoner here, just like you, and I came back from my first battle.” “They let ya keep your memories from here on and let me tell ya, it is scary shit.” “Ya think you’re gonna die, and poof! your back.” “Damn, man, I thought I would be a goner the first time too.” “The tournament is a bloodsport, I know that much.” “There’s some whole audience out there behind the sky; oh, you haven’t seen the sky yet.” “Ah shit, I gotta rest.” “We gots 40 minutes or so before the next match, so you should prepare.” “Ya know, meditate, pray, whatever the hell ya need to do.”
The voice behind the force field paused for a second, Al heard the unseen man lying down, and a little while later, the voice asked:
“Oh by the way, whats yer name? I’m Sparticus”
“They called me Altissimus”, Al said, not sure of this man behind the wall. He was still a little shaken by this whole ordeal, and his back had painful welts
.
“Good to meet ya, newblood.”, Sparticus replied cheerfully. Things were silent after. Al figured he needed the rest too.
