Captain James (Bulldog) McHugh of the 74th Tactical Fighter wing yawned and stretched in the chair of his Wraith. He clicked a few buttons on his control panel, and
stated his readings over the comms, "Target ETA five minutes".
"Roger that Bulldog", replied Liuetenant Jon Howell, the wraith pilot just a few hundred meters off his port side.
Reciting the unit objectives in his mind again, he began to sweat, even though it was a relatively harmless group of shuttles, there were always those unsettled fears
in the back of his mind. The dozens of stories he had heard of Protoss ambushes had not exactly calmed his nerves either.
Suddenly his comms unit crackled, and a distressed voice said, "Help! Help! Is anyone out there? I am Lt. Davis of 164th wing, please, send help! Is anyone there! I
am under attack by..." the message then cut off abruptly.
The hairs on the back of James' neck suddenly stood up on end, he tried to think rationally, but he didn't know what to do, he decided to contact the cruiser in the
sector. Trying to hide the fear in his voice, he asked, "Captain McHugh to Behemoth cruiser Independence, I just received a distress call, and would like to know if any
other Wraith's were supposed to be in the area." He waited a few seconds, and recieved no response, "Cruiser Independence, do you copy?"
Suddenly Howell burst in and said, "Damnit! I've got an Arbiter on radar, they must be jamming us, what the hell are we going to do? They'll be here soon!"
James' suddenly began to think that the cruiser may be destroyed, and that they're the only ones left, and in that case, there would be no hope. "We're cloaked,
maybe they don't see us."
"That's an negative, they're fixing right on our position!", said Howell.
"Allright, prepare missiles, we've been trained for situations like these, and we're going to fight it out."
Howell's voice wavered as he said, "Yes sir."
A few minutes passed, after the group had readied weapons, and prepared for the attack, they waited with terror to meet their doom. "Allright, I've got a reading on the
Arbiter, 20 klicks away, and closing.", said McHugh.
Within a few seconds, the Arbiter was within five kilometers, "I've got a visual, keep a look out for cloaked ships, lock weapons, and fire.", James said.
"Roger that sir." said Howell, and just as he said that the arbiter let loose a burst of energy from its cannons. The blasts smacked the shields on Howell's ship.
"Shields at 64%, evasive manuevers." With that, Howell enacted some manuevers designed to lose the enemy.
McHugh glanced out the right window to see the Arbiter and Howell tango in a dance to the death, he veered his course and began to lock missiles on the arbiter.
Just as he began to turn, a carrier decloaked not 100 meters in front of him, McHugh screamed and pulled up on the stick just in time to avoid a collision. He said, "I've got
a carrier on screen! Releasing multiple interceptors!" McHugh glanced on his HUD, and still aiming at the Arbiter, let loose a volley of missiles.
The two missiles that McHugh fired landed direct hits on the Arbiter. McHugh glanced at his controls to see that three interceptors were on his tail. Through the
forward windows McHugh saw plasma bullets whiz by his ship, one or two struck his ship, and it shook violently. Glancing at his shield readouts he said, "I was just hit,
down to eighty percent shields, how are you doing Howell?"
Howell said quickly, "I've been hit a few more times, not doing so hot, shields at 41%."
"Hang in there." Jim decided to forget about the Interceptors on his tail, and go to help his friend. Getting a lock on the arbiter again, he quickly pulled the trigger with
his sweaty hands. "Rot in hell you damn Proto!" McHugh then paid for helping his friend as the interceptors again hit him with plasma bullets, that took his shields to 58%."
The arbiter was struck by the missiles, now in criticle condition, after hits from Howell and McHugh, but it was unwavering in its pursuit of Howell. The Protoss pilot
then saw Howell make a mistake, and took advantage of it, the arbiter got directly behind Howell's wraith, and began to unleash the wrath of its weapons upon him.
Howell's ship lost its shields, and its hull integrity soon followed. Before he was disintigrated into nothingness, Howell managed to scream, "Help me, God! It's going to kill
me, I'm going to die!!"
McHugh felt horrible, but there was nothing more he could do, he had just lost one of his best friends, and he was facing a carrier and an arbiter, things were looking
rather bleak for him at the time. Then, out of nowhere, suddenly decloaked a squadron of 6 wraiths, McHugh had not looked at his long range radar due to the dogfighting,
and the Protoss would not have seen them due to their cloaking abilities.
"Here to help, McHugh", said an unkown pilot,"Sorry we didn't inform you that we were coming, but the Protoss monitor the channels, and we didn't want them
knowing."
The total of seven wraiths then made short work of the Protoss, losing only one of the pilots that had just arrived. As they began to return home McHugh said, "I'm so
lucky to be alive, but I feel like I should have been the one to go, not him, I should be grateful, but I'm not, I wish it was me instead of him."
One of the wraith pilots then said, "My friend, you're just had your introductory class in the reality of war."
