Introduction

It’s been a while since my last report. Almost three months now, and another month since the one before that. With that in mind, I set out last night to find a game to report. A good, no, epic game. One that had the gods themselves fighting, trash talking, and arbiter rushing. What I ended up with….well, see for yourself. I decided to report on the finals of Fox’s tournament. Let me introduce the players:

SlingsNarrows: A moderately good player, I helped him warm up before the game. Let me just say that he does not map hack. He doesn’t even posses the ability to use a map hack. In fact, if one were to share vision with him during a game, he would become so distracted that he would lose his second hatchery to a zealot rush, then proceed to get run over. This is of course all idle speculation. *ahem*

{88}Hawk: Who can forget the months of flames he left on the Br.com forums? His incessant claims of godliness, the fact he claims a winning record vs Maynard, and other things have led to his gross unpopularity. Despite a public and sincere apology, he doesn’t have too many fans. I’ve found you have to have a firm hand when dealing with Hawk. Oh, and on roger wilco he sounds like a twelve year old girl ^^.

PvZ….I heard that was pretty easy

The game is, of course, on Lost Temple. Slings picks zerg at the last second, while Hawk, perhaps overconfident in his 1-0 series lead over Slings, elects to random. Slings gets brown zerg in the left, while Hawk draws white protoss on the top. The game gets off to slow start, mainly consisting of me selling out Hawk for his poor cloning abilities. Hawk, his feelings hurt, has a quick response:

Yup, he discs. Fortunately I had just saved the game. Unfortunately the end stats let Slings know that Hawk was protoss, and that he was slightly out resourcing him. I spent a minute or two telling Hawk that “disc=loss” and other harassing things, then we resumed from the save. Just about this time Hawk’s scouting probe arrived at Slings’ base, and started attacking a drone. Slings, obviously panicked by this devestating attack pulls all his drones off mining and orders them to attack the offender! Hawk, of course, pulls his probe back. The drones chase it for but a short distance, then go back to the minerals….and Hawk attacks again with the intrepid probe. Once more all the drones go to battle stations and attack the intruder, this time actually killing it. On the other hand, I’m positive more than 50 minerals worth of mining time was lost =].

The initial builds of both players are a little odd. Hawk choses to do the same move that got me eliminated by a four pool in the first round of the tourney. He makes a pylon on eight, then two gateways on nine, placing the gateways out in front of his natural. Good vs an early hatchery build, not so good vs early pool. Slings, having started his build when he didn’t know his opponent’s race, had gone for a conservative eight pool strategy. This gives Slings six zerglings at Hawk’s gates right as the first two zealots pop out. Slings wisely attacks the pylon powering the gateways, taking it down while losing three zerglings. Two more lings and four reinforcing drones show up soon after, but run from the two zealots. Now at this point, I’ve given up hope for Hawk. He gambled and lost. Still, maybe all my mentoring back in the day rubbed off on Hawk a little. He definitely picked up the arrogance part, let’s see if he got the determination part too.

Slings comes back in with his four drone/four ling assault squad and takes down one of the zealots, losing two lings. The other zealot is in the red, and Hawk retreats it back to his probes as he tries to warp in a pylon next to his gates. Slings attacks the newly warping pylon with his forces while Hawk uses a probe to attack one of the lings. The pylon falls, but so does both of the lings that were engaged with the pylon. Hawk has been building up cash without the ability to spend and starts on a gate in his main. Then he sends four probes and the zealot back down to his gates to chase off the drones.

Be cheesier Plz

Once more Hawk tries to put a pylon, and once more Slings decides to stop it. Four more zerglings and the four drones scare Hawk into pulling his damaged zealot and probes back, and Slings takes down the warping pylon. Hawk tries to counter with one probe and his zealot, but it gets taken down easily. Slings keeps the flow of zerglings coming, and posts a full control group on the top of the ramp. But now Hawk finally has next two zealots ready, and defending his probes. Slings comes in with his zerglings and drones for what could be a final battle….

But it isn’t enough! Hawk uses great micro and keeps the damaged zealots in constant movement, letting the probes do the damage. In the end, Hawk lost six probes, bringing his total down to eight, but didn’t lose either zealot. Slings lost all twelve zerglings and his four drones. Hawk moves out towards Slings’ base with his zealots, killing one of the four zerglings that had been left to take down his proximal gateways and forcing the other three to scamper off. This exchange prompted a comment from the peanut gallery.

Hawk decided to take a little bit of the offensive. So did Slings. Slings sent six zerglings running past Hawk’s two approaching zealots and attempted to hit the protoss ramp. Hawk had three zealots guarding his ramp when he arrived. Not wanting to lose troops for no reason, Slings pulled those lings back. Hawk was scaling Sling’s ramp at almost the same time. Realizing his lack of troops was going to make this painful, Slings pulled his drones off mining and greeted Hawk at the ramp with his whopping three drones and four zerglings. Despite some micro by Hawk on his already heavily damaged zealots, both go down while only killing two of the zerglings. Slings used his drones to interdict the zealots movement ability in just the right way so that all four zerglings were hitting and being hit by only one zealot at a time. Unfortunately, this was sort of a last hurrah for Slings. Hawk had sent his three ramp zealots over to join the fray, and they faced the eight remaining zerglings at Slings’ ramp a few seconds later. Hawk used his micro skills once again, pulling back the zealot taking the most damage and reentering him into the fray a few seconds later. In the end, despite pulling back and using his drones to help, Slings killed only one zealot at the cost of all his lings and drones. Hawk expanded to his natural as the zealots took down Slings’ base.

And with that, the tourney was over 2-0 in Hawk’s favor. A good, if excessively cheesy game on both player’s parts. Congratulations Hawk, and good luck in your future games (although I’m pretty sure BackStabbingLiar is about to commit ritual suicide after reading that Hawk won).

Thanks for reading!
