Insurrection: Episode III Bat out of Hell

Kerrigan looked towards the wraith that had positioned themselves in front of her fleet. She ignored the warnings being offered to her and ordered all laser batteries to charge for a full strike. She didn’t want to waste her crew or her ships, but these pirates would see her men dead and her ship for their own.

“If they do not move out of our way, shoot them out of the sky. This is Kerrigan to the fleet, prepare for evasive maneuvers, we’re leaving this rock.”

“Kerrigan, the enemy ships are moving into position into an intercept course. We will be engaged any minute.”

Kerigan could see that a squadron of wraiths had left the nearby starport and were moving fast against their flank. The fleet would need time to escape and she could not spare any fighters in this skirmish.

“All fighters, get the transport off the planet, I don’t want to lose a single ship. The battlecruisers will stay behind and protect the fleet from the rear. All battlecruisers, prepare to engage enemy fighters.”

The three-behemoth vessels turned into the oncoming wraiths and the command was fire at will. Laser batteries erupted into a beautiful halo of fire, as wraith after wraith, succumb to the fury. Kerrigan was able to swat the wraiths from the sky in a decisive swing, but she looked to the starport, only to see the bridge of a fellow battlecruiser. They massive capital ships would be airborne soon and they would outnumber her two to one. The fleet was still evacuating and she needed time.

“Transfer all available power to the yamoto guns. Target the starport with a full spread.”

“Kerrigan, if we use all the power, we may not have enough thrust to escape the planets gravity.”

“But if we wait any longer, we’ll be staring down the barrel of their yamotos. Get me auxiliary power now.”

“Auxiliary power activated, yamoto gun is operational and standing by.”

“Fire at will.”

The gun bays opened to reveal the small fission disruptor and the head of the cruisers bridge. The chamber began the cold fission process and soon it had generated a ball of nuclear energy. The magnetic stabilizers, adapted to the high energy yields and adjusted for the targeting array. With the coordinates locked in, the fission reactor detonated and the magnetic stabilizers reverse polarity. The volatile ball of energy flies free and slams directly into the gas mains and electrical systems of the starport. It’s followed by two other similar blasts and the combined force literally ignites the air around the structure. The building collaspses in a whirlwind of fire and radiation and the mighty ships docked in wait are tossed from the air like cheap toys. They crash into the snow, twisting into an abomination of metal, bodies and ice. The devastation is enough to buy the fleet a little time and Kerrigan is able to leave this world a charred cinder. With the initial threat gone, Kerrigan focuses on recovery.

“What are our losses?”

“The good news is that we walked away without any losses. The bad news is that half the fleet is in the need for some serious repairs. We have to find a place to make repairs fast or we’ll half to abandon most of the wraiths and transports.”

“Damn, where is the nearest hospitable planet?”

The only one we can reach intact is the Protoss homeworld Aiur.”

“Aiur? Are you sure we can’t reach another world?”

“Unless you want to try Braxis again, Aiur is the only hospitable planet the entire fleet will be able to reach.”

“If we go to another world, what will our losses be?”

“We’re looking at a possible forty percent loss. Everything from dropships to your own battlecruiser.”

Kerrigan, did not like the choices she was given. She could risk the loss of her fleet in the middle of space, or risk her own life by landing on Aiur. The Protoss were noble, but would they want to have vengeance for her past actions? Perhaps Jim would save her one last time.

“Kerrigan to the fleet. Set a course for Aiur, but keep an eye out for any other planet.”

The fleet turned and marched through the blackness of space, either to a safe haven or to a death march. Raynor, had been longtime allies with the Protoss, perhaps they would honor his memory, by protecting his militia.

Mengsk had waited for Raynor to finish reading his fabricated past. He had won the war aginst the UED, and he had defeated the Ptrotoss from their invasion of Korhal. Each page revealed Raynor as a hero, overcoming insurmountable odds and defeats foe after ruthless foe. Victory after victory filled the file, with the exception of one betrayal. It would occur on just after a victory over the UED, just on the outskirts of the imperial city. It was there that the militia leader known as Kerrigan, betrayed the Dominion forces and killed Raynor’s friend and mentor, General Edmond Duke. Raynor vaguely recalled the name Kerrigan, and asked Mengsk to refresh his memory.

“Arcturus, I can’t seem to remember much from this file, but I do recall two names. One is this General Duke and the other is the terrorist known as Sarah Kerrigan. It says here that we were double-crossed after the battle of Korhal. Kerrigan killed most of the standing forces and also killed General Duke by destroying his battlecruiser.”

”This General Duke, I vaguely remember him. It says here that he and I were friends?”

“The very best of friends. You served under him during the Dominion Revolution and was his second in command during the Brood Wars. You were devastated after his death, and were never quite the same.”

“I also remember the name Sarah Kerrigan. I remember fighting against her, but I also remember her as a good friend.”

“Yes, in the beginning you were close friends, but that was merely a ploy for you to lower your guard. Her and her militia ambushed your divisions at dawn. Duke’s battlecruiser was destroyed in the fight and your army was shattered. Her attempt to also kill you failed when our transport evacuated the remaining divisions. It is imperative that you remember this because I have a special mission for you to fulfill. If you are not ready, I will understand.”

Mengsk laid his hand on Raynor’s shoulder and smiled with the warmth and compassion of Satan himself.

“What is my objective?”

“I will give you the Korhal Wing of the Dominion fleet, and I will set a string of events that will eliminate all our enemies. It involves an ambush against the terrorist Kerrigan and her Protoss allies.”

“I was under the impression that the Protoss were neutral in Terran affairs?”

“That is true, but several renegade factions with in the Protoss hierarchy have banded with Kerrigan to overthrow the Dominion and assume control of the terran colonies. A spy in Kerrigan’s own militia has sent word that Kerrigan has sought refuge at Aiur. I will lay a trap for them that will crush both Kerrigan and her Protoss allies. All I need is you at the helm of our fleets.”

Raynor stared deep into the pages of the file that contained his life. He could remember small glimpses of his life, but could not fully see through the haze. He did remember Kerrigan and a promise he made to friend on those dusty plains. She would pay and he would bring all those around her crashing down to do it.

“If you need me, you got me. When do I leave?”

Insurrection Episode IV The friend of my enemy is my enemy

The green fields of Aiur sent a chill up Kerrigan’s spine. She was unsure if the Protoss would forgive her past atrocities and help her fleet, if not for her then for Raynor.

“Aiur is dead ahead Kerrigan. We are receiving a transmission.”

“Terran vessels, you have entered Protoss space. Identify yourself, or be destroyed.”

“We are Raynor’s Riders. We are seeking shelter from Dominion warships.”

“Where is Raynor?”

“Raynor is dead, I am the commanding officer, Lt. Sarah Kerrigan.”

“Kerrigan? Then you are the riders. It is a sad day to here of such a great warrior’s demise. You may land.”

Kerrigan’s fleet landed in a designated clearing and a small army greeted them. As the fleet made repairs, Kerrigan was called to the council to inform them of Raynor’s death. The head of the council was still Zeratul, partially crippled from the Hybrid Wars. He welcomed Kerrigan like an old friend instead of a once bitter enemy. Kerrigan explained what had occurred on Korhal and the loss of Raynor. Zeratul and council listened and they immediately set to honor Raynor.

“It is sad that we have lost such a brave warrior. Especially now that the Dominion wishes to release a plague across our system.”

“Plague, what plague?”

“Did you not hear, Tarsonis has been breached..”

Kerrigan sat in shock as she heard news that she had hoped never to hear uttered. After the Hybrid Wras, Mengsk nearly destroyed Aiur in a hail of nuclear missiles. Aiur was saved after Kerrigan sent a psi emmiter loaded ship into orbit. The Zerg on aiur followed the beacon and flew directly into the nuclear ballistics. Though many of the Zerg were destroyed, they still roamed freely on Tarsonis and on the Tarsonis space platform. More psi emitters were placed on Tarsonis and Zerg from all over the system traveled to the planet. The Protoss elected to spare the creatures and devised a psi crystal field that surrounded the planet, preventing the zerg from escaping. The planet was left in peace, until Dominion scientists used the infiltrated the planet and began test of a new Psi disruptor. If successful, the Dominion would control the broods completely. The council had hoped that Raynor would defeat Mengsk, but it would now seem that they would have to take matters into their own hands.

“Kerrigan, we will need your militia to aid in the defense of Tarsonis. If we can halt the expansion back into the Tarsonis sector, we will be able to prevent the release of the Zerg.”

“Just because Jim is dead doesn’t mean the rebellion dies with him. I will continue to fight and we will overthrow Mengsk and his Dominion. If you help us, we will be successful.”

“You know we can not interfere in your civil war. Preventing the Zerg from escaping Tarsonis, is within our power. Your own wars are none of our concerns.”

“If we fail, the Dominion will release the Zerg . Help us now and we will prevent the flood of Zerg.”

“The council must vote on this matter. We shall have an answer in the morning.”

For Kerrigan morning could not come soon enough. She would wait, but not for long.

Dominion Starports, Korhal

Raynor had assumed control of his new fleet. It was a strong force of over five hundred ships, many of them capital ships and fighter squadrons. The fleet was to move at firsat light and would be informed of where the enemy fleet was heading. From there, Raynor was given full control.of the operation. He was to set a trap, but that was as far as the mission criteria extended. Bring Kerrigan back, anyone else leave for dead.

“Sir, we are receiving a coded transmission from the spy in Kerrigans militia. It’s a set of co-ordinates. No visual or verbal transmission sent. Only these co-ordinates.”

“What do the co-ordinates lead to?”

“Tarsonis, sir. They are for Tarsonis.”

“Very well, have the fleet deploy at Tarsonis. I want to meet with the admirals once the fleet has arrived.”

“Yes sir.”

“See you real soon Kerrigan. Real soon.”

Kerrigan was informed during the night, that the council had decided to join with her in the fight against Mengsk. However, they insisted that Tarsonis be secured and then an operation against Korhal could commence. The combined fleets arrived at tarsonis and found not a ship in site. The area was scanned for vessels, but none were found. The Psi Deflector Shield appeared intact, with no sign of escaped Zerg.

“It seems that all is quiet.”

“For now it would appear so. I shall leave several observers to keep an eye on this sector.”

The tiny robots were deployed and the fleet prepared to push onward towards the Korhal System. It was then that a few small vcessels were spotted to the fleets right.

“What the hell is that?”

“It would appear to be a dominion fighter, make that two. Wait, three fighters on our right flank.”

“Kerrigan, this is Zeratul. We have just detected a small fleet of ships to our rear. They are all Dominion.”

“Kerrigan, we have ships appearing in every sector, we are now reading battlecruisers and whole squadrons of wraiths. We’re pinned in.”

“Kerrigan to the fleet, its an ambush. We need to get out of here now!”

“Hold on there darlin’, I should point out that you are surrounded and I have no problem putting you down.”

The voiced carries from ship to ship, so hauntingly familiar and yet so very different. A visual transmission was sent and the enemy fleet commander could be seen.

“Jim?”

“That’s right dear. Like I said, you are now surrounded. If you surrender, I’ll make this as painless as possible.”

“I thought you were dead.”

“Not quite darlin’, not that you didn’t try. Emperor Mengsk refreshed my memory and I have my orders to bring you in alive.”

“Raynor, why have you betrayed us? What is the meaning of this?”

“Quiet Protoss, I don’t have orders to bring you in alive. All I need is Kerrigan, the rest of you should just leave peacefully. My ships will take you home.”

“I can do that Jim.”

“Too bad Kerrigan. This is your last warning. Disengage your weapon systems, or be destroyed.”

The transmission ended and Kerrigan had to think fast.

“Kerrigan to the fleet, I don’t know what happened to Raynor, but I’m not sticking around to find out. Find a hole in their lines and make it bigger. Everyone goes and nobody stays behind.”

“Sir, the enemy ships do not appear to be shutting their weapons systems down.”

“Corporal, have the fleet target the capital ships. On my word, nuke’ em.”

“Kerrigan, scans indicate there is a small gap on the left flank.”

“Weapons are charged and operational.”

“Kerrigan to the fleet, head for the gap and blast your way through. I need engines now.”

“FIRE!”
