Hi all, well I’ve taken a sojourn from B.R.ing since I stopped playing brood war, however today I was graced with the war3 beta. A quick lesson in relationships for all you flaming idiots at this site who think that internet interaction is objective and therefore you can be as cruel mean and insulting as you wish with no consequences, your wrong. See people might not be able to hurt you back, but they wont help you, And in times of dire need, like times when you don’t have the Warcraft 3 beta. Your going to be straight out of luck. Where as if you have a decent level of courtesy to people you may end up with a few friends in high places.
............ So first a big shout to my bro for hooking me up with his own C.D. key, spending 3 days working past my firewalls and whatnot to get me the 400mb war3 file. Before I start with the battle report I’d like to say this was my first game and I took no S.S. Also I didn’t pay much attention to the details of the game so they may be a bit fuzzy. I will be taking S.S of the next few games I play and when I play one that exemplifies my newbieness best I’ll post it like a decent B.R.
On with the game
..............The first thing that hit me as war3 was loading up was the animated backgrounds, they are hardcore own for sure. I hopped into a chan and was all by myself but I had read that there was now a feature that randomly matched you with opponents/partners for your game type. So I clicked on random game, a cool little eye popped up and blinked at me a few times. Then a spiffy loading screen came up with a cool looking orc and a magical blue load bar. I watched that bar with great anticipation it was almost finished when it stopped for at least 30 seconds. I panicked.. Then I prayed and the blue bar completed ( god is good for something it seems) MY FIRST GAME WAS UNDERWAY I was so excited I nearly wet myself. I had chosen humies because I wanted to understand my tech tree well enough to not get trounced. I started off at the 6 o clock spot on the “temple”. Now about that, I don’t know how good it was that blizz made this map I'm afraid its going to become again the standard map and because of that war3 might be steered more into a sequel of brood war then would be hoped. Anyway the map was very similar to Lost temple instead of ramps there are gradual hills when your units walk up the hills they become larger from your perspective. Using the 6 spot as an example your main has a slope directly above it and level ground to the left leading to an expansion from there another slope of a seemingly steeper decline (I’m not sure if this will affect high/low ground advantages more or less than a less steep slope) leads out to the middle.. As I selected my peasants a hearty “More Work?” greeted me. I quickly set all four of them on my mine I produced 1 and made a farm with him my next couple went to wood and my 4th made a barracks. I wasn’t quite sure how much resources I started with but I’m guessing something like 1k gold and 5oo wood. I kept making peasants and started a footman in my barracks, about this time I remembered there were heroes in this game. I hastily cancelled my peasant at my town hall and started a paladin. He was quickly done I kept making peasants even though seemingly I had as many as I needed (they were standing outside my mine twiddling there thumbs). I started out from my main to the center of the map for a bit of scouting with my pal and footman. Over the trees I could see an ogre and what looked like a rat with a mace and then I saw the merc camp. I went to look out but had to go around a protrusion of trees. As I made my way around them I spotted my first creeps a gnoll and 2 berserkers, I think. Not knowing what to expect I fled quickly. I made 1 more rax and went to explore my Nat there I found 3 more creeps. I produced about 5 more footmen and set out to the choke at my main. I killed the creeps there without suffering a loss (I used a little zealot micro) then went on to my nat after killing the 3 creeps there my hero flashed signifying it had leveled. I clicked on his skill point button (a small plus in his command box thingy) I upped my paladins defense aura giving all my surrounding units +1 defense I decided to add a few riflemen to my army in case I was being air rushed by something. At this point I had barely given a thought to my opponent, I sent out a lone footmen to 12 and then 3 and then 9 he saw many creeps but took only 1 or 2 hits in passing them. Once he got to the 9 spot the first thing I noticed was there were still creeps at the front of his main. I think usually you should kill the creeps near you as fast as possible so your opponent doesn’t gain the experience from them. Maybe he left them there to detract from a rush attempt by me. Either way I ran right by them, up, in and saw some glowing trees odd buildings and a little elf chick on a tiger it had a ranged attack and I only got a few more steps before Fred the footmen bit the dust. I decided with his 1 elf chick on a tiger I should attack him now and gain my first win, to hell with exploring the tech tree. After I had added 1 more barracks bringing my total to 3 I set out to 9 with roughly 7 footmen 3 riflemen and my hero. I made my way up his ramp, at the same time back home I sent 2 peasants to my nat to start an expansion. I also upgraded my hall to a keep. As I neared the top of the Hill suddenly somewhere around 15 elf chicks on tigers came charging (not literally) down the hill and engaged my army I wasn’t quite ready for this because my pal was in front and my footmen engaged before I knew what was going on, I tried to pull my pal out but he was quickly torn up. I was rather dejected at this utter failure and left the rest of my army to do what it could thinking I'd Surely lost.
What counters tiger riding elf chicks ?
............. I didn’t really know but I figured a lot of something might do it and I noticed I had a lot of wood. So I thought I could make some archers or riflemen. I made another rax near my exp and only had 3 riflemen by then end of my losing battle. If my opponent had attacked me at any time within the next 2 minutes I’m sure I would have died but he didn’t and soon enough I had somewhere around 14 riflemen a high upkeep and an altar of kings to get my hero back. Then I got a message that my mine was running low and I thought about expanding. In war3 you can see the layout of the entire map when you start you have to explore to see what units or buildings are wherever and when you leave the area you cant see them again just like in starcraft. So looking at my map I saw a mine in the bottom right so I moved my force out to cover the outlet to my hopeful expansion and my nat when I got there though I saw a little blue speck at a merc camp in the low left corner above the mine. I scouted in a bit more with a peasant and saw a lot of tiger riding elf chicks. I then realized I could use some Cavalry myself and upgraded to a castle I arrayed my riflemen so that when the tiger riding elf chicks came around the corner they would enter a arc of fire while I put a few knights and my hero out in front always to stall and soak damage. This tactic worked well and my hero leveled multiple times during the ensuing battle. As my hero leveled I kept adding points into his defensive aura till it went to a max of 3. All my units near him now had a +3 Defense. I put some skill points into holy lightning or something that I didn’t get to use. During the battle I lost all 3 of my knights and a few rifle guys but I then moved out to the merc camp where I cleaned up a few straggling tiger riding elf chicks. I then realized there was water separating me from my hopeful mine, but wait the water looked different than the surrounding water on the minimap lighter maybe. So I went to investigate and found that my units could wade through the water over to the island expansion in the bottom left they did and found 2 troll berserkers and a level 6 rock golem. I took care of them without a loss because it was nighttime and they were a sleep so I snuck up and focus fired on the rock golem. I quickly set my peasant to creating a hall there and took my army back out to the outlet of the woods leading to both of my expansions I added about 6 more knights and 4 more riflemen giving me a group and a half or so of units. I figured now would be a good time to attack seeing as how we had both reset our unit count once and I may have more expansions than him. So I setout to his ramp and then my mine blew up. So I sent all my peasants to the island. Once I separated my knights and heroes from my riflemen I set up the hill at the top I met around again 15 night riding elf chicks. This guy didn’t mix up his army much and I waded through the carcasses of the tiger riding elf chicks like something big and bad that wades through carcasses. I had a couple weapons and armor upgrades and my paladin’s +3 D aura for my all my infantry so the battle was short and sweet. I was a little disappointed at the ease of my victory but was so excited about playing, I didn’t realize it yet. I quickly razed his base Exchanged G.G.s and ran off to Chem that I was now 30 minutes late for.
.......... I know this report sux but I’m just doing it for anyone out there that might want to here a bit about the game. I know for a few days i was checking for a war3 B.R. I wont be reading the comments section and if your opinion matters to me and youd like to comment then tell me what you think on Aim.
Thanks, bye ................................................ ThisIsNotAnExit
