Another brief moment passed between us as I stared deep into this woman's eyes. I began to study her in a near trance-like state, peering into her soul through her beautiful blue eyes. I could tell just from her appearance that she had been through something very traumatic, perhaps she had witnessed the death of a loved one.
"H-hello?" she said, her quickly blinking eyes finally taking me out of the trance she had put me in.
"O-oh! Right!" I said, shaking my head while reaching for a shirt, realizing I had on nothing but a dirty towel wrapped around my waist, "Ehm...you kinda caught me at a bad time, miss. See my truck broke down and I got caught in this terrible storm..." I began, squeezing the shirt I had grabbed, realizing that it was the top of my Wallgreens uniform...and was drenched in rain.
The water poured from the shirt as I forced a nervous smile, hoping to lighten the mood. She smiled slightly and quickly sat down on the couch, but stood back up just as quickly, realizing she was soaked from head to toe.
"You wouldn't happen to have another towel around here...would you?" she said, nervously looking at her soaked clothes.
"Oh! No problem at all! Give me about 5 minutes so I can change and I'll be right out with a towel," I said, trying to keep my composure. I wanted to tell her that I really didn't mind if she sat down on the couch but I couldn't find the right words, so instead I quickly pranced into the bedroom and started changing.
In a matter of no time, I had clothed myself in lose-fitting jeans and a button up T-Shirt. I knew she must be freezing in those soaked clothes, so I quickly ran into the bathroom to fetch a towel.
Shit!!! No clean towels!!! I thought to myself, once again realizing that I still need to take a trip to the laundromat. I frantically looked all around the bathroom, then went onto the bedroom looking for anything that could possibly resemble a towel. Finally, my eyes landed upon a dirty towel on my bedroom floor.
It's not that dirty... I thought as I picked up the towel and shook it a few times. I regained my composure and held the towel in both of my hands, finally ready to approach the woman in my living room.
Her eyes immediately locked right onto me as I entered the room once again. I quickly gulped down any anxiety I had and slowly walked up to her. Draping the towel over her shoulders, I quickly realized that the only thing that could possibly rival the beauty in her eyes was the beauty of her smile, and I got a first hand look as she took her seat on the couch.
"So what brings you here miss...?" I said while pulling up a chair, hoping to break the ice.
"I saw your ad in the paper a few months back...I need your assistance..." she said, tucking her feet underneath her and snuggling into the towel as much as she could.
"Go on..." I replied, leaning over with my hands in my lap.
"Some bad people are after me...I just need you to protect me for a while, I figured that an out-of-work bounty hunter would be the perfect place for me..." she said, her head tilted down and slightly to the left while she spoke.
"What makes you think I'm an out-of-work bounty hunter...?!" I replied, now sitting straight up with my arms crossed (damn, there went my composure).
"Oh...I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you...but I haven't seen another ad for you since..." she said, bringing her head up and once again locking those hypnotizing eyes on mine.
"Well...work has been slow recently..." I said, once again forcing a nervous smile to try and lighten the mood.
She smiled and once again tilted her head down, huddling into the towel. I relaxed into my chair, trying to give the impression I was calm, even though a plethora of thoughts were racing through my still shocked mind.
"Well if you are hiring me to protect you, I will need payment of course," I said, trying to sound as professional as I could knowing full well that even if she didn't have a dime to her name, I would still protect her for as long as she needed.
"Here...this is all I have right now..." she said while reaching into her right jean pocket and tossing a wad of cash on the table in front of us.
I quickly reached over and grabbed the soaked stack of cash. Flipping through it, to my disbelief, I found it to be well over ten thousand dollars!
"Wow...heh...yeah this will definately cover it..." I said, once again trying to regain my composure.
She smiled wryly before speaking up, "Yeah I thought it would, all I need is a place to hide for a few days."
"Alright...what about these bad people?" I said to her while quickly pocketing the money. I figured it was some lapse of sanity, better make sure she forgets about it before she comes back to her senses.
"It would be best that you don't know who they are...just know that they are very bad people and that money I gave you is theirs," she said in a rather defensive tone.
"If you would tell me who they are I would be much better equipped to protect you..." I said, once again trying to glean some information from her as politely as I could.
"All you need to do is shoot whoever comes to the front door," she said in a very stern tone.
Realizing I was defeated, I just stared at her. She had a very serious look on her face, which looked rather odd given the fact she was shivering underneath the towel.
"You wouldn't mind if I went and took a shower would you...?" she said, losing her serious exterior and giving into her own needs.
"Oh of course! It's on the other side of the bedroom but you got the last clean towel I have..." I said, thinking as fast as I could to hide my tracks.
"Oh, that's fine, I don't mind using a slightly dirty one," she said, obviously trying to keep from being a problem.
I smiled, got up, and walked over the kitchen figuring she would be pretty hungry. Looking through the refrigerator, I finally came to the conclusion that tonight would be a great night to order a pizza. In a matter of a few minutes, I had the pizza ordered with my favorite toppings...pepperoni, olives, and anchovies...mmmm...
After getting the pizza ordered, I figured I would get the woman some clothes laid out. I quickly paced over to my bedroom and rummaged through the clothes right as the door knocked.
Almost on instinct, I ran over to my sock drawer and pulled out my Colt .45 and loaded it with a fresh clip. As quietly as possible, I stealthily strode over to the front door and up against the wall, holding the gun with both hands pointing up right near my face. I nervously inched my left hand forward towards the door knob with my back still up against the wall, while I tightly clasped the gun with my right hand.
All in one move, I turned the knob on the door, swung it open, grasped the gun with both hands, jumped out in front of the now open door, and pointed the gun right at the head of Dagomar.
"Whoa whoa whoa! We playing cops & robbers again buddy?" Dag said, looking straight down the barrel of the handgun.
"Oh jesus Dag! You scared the shit out of me!" I said while flipping the safety back on my gun and moving it down to my hip with my other hand on my chest.
That's right!!! Dag was going to take me to the pussycats club tonight... I thought to myself as I stared at his confused face.
"Well...? We gonna go? Get your shoes on damn!" Dagomar said, still staring at the gun.
"Umm...ehh...see...well...tonight is bad, maybe tomorrow night...?" I spouted out nervously while looking behind me to see if I could see the woman.
"I already told you, you aren't getting out of...." Dagomar began before suddenly turning his attention over my shoulder, "Oh damn!! Who's the hottie?!"
I quickly whipped my head around to see the woman standing in only a towel, in my bedroom with the door wide open. Without a moment to think, I frantically pushed Dagomar outside, closed the door behind me, and tucked my gun in the back of my pants.
"Look...that's a client! She's paid me very good money to keep her protected so I have to cancel for tonight alright?!" I said very impatiently.
He looked me over briefly, but then dawned huge smile across his face. "Well what the hell are you doing then? Let's go protect her! You make her a nice, steaming pot of coffee, and I'll clean up a bit!"
Dagomar pushed me out of his way and walked inside. I quickly followed behind, but not close enough as I heard the most blood curdling scream come from the woman, followed by Dagomar dodging a frying pan.
"Wait wait wait! He's a friend miss!! Stop!" I yelled out, having nearly been hit in the head by the frying pan myself.
She dropped the frying pan and once again locked onto my eyes. She had clothed herself in a pair of my old jeans and a regular T-Shirt which didn't look too bad on her since she was only a couple inches shorter than me. It also became clear that she was a whole lot younger than she first appeared, maybe not too far off my age. And her hair looked to be either a very dark blonde or very light brunette, and much more beautiful now that it had been washed and combed.
"Alright...Let me introduce you guys. Miss...this is Dagomar, he's my best friend," I said as Dagomar held out his hand.
"And I'm Heidi..." the woman said as she nervously rested her hand on Dagomar's.
"And I'm Mehdi, sorry about the confusion you two," I said, realizing that in the confusion the woman and me haven't been introduced yet.
I quickly grabbed a can of Folgers and a coffee pot and immediately got started on a nice, steaming hot pot of coffee; Dagomar contented himself with picking up the various trash off my floor, including that poor slice of pizza that met its doom earlier today; while Heidi nestled herself up on my couch once again, intently looking at us working.
The pot of coffee was just starting to make when I heard yet another knock on the door. Heidi and Dagomar both looked at the door, then at me for support.
"Oh...must be the pizza guy," I said, trying to calm them down while nervously looking between the two of them.
Heidi smiled and closed her eyes, as if she was going to get some sleep; Dagomar took his position behind the coffee pot to take care of the coffee; and I dug out a $20 from the stack of cash Heidi gave to me.
I mumbled to myself as I calmly opened the door and greeted the Pizza Hut delivery boy. I gave him the twenty and took the pizza from him, the smell was like heaven, I couldn't wait to get it open and dig in. I turned around and headed back to the others when I felt club like blow on the back of my head.
I fell to the ground with a thud as two guys wearing suits and black leather gloves came rushing in. My mind was a blur as I fought off unconsciousness, all that I could make out were screams and yelling. I wanted to help them but I just couldn't move.
"Mehdi please help..." Although very soft and tearful, Heidi's voice stormed through my mind like a giant tsunami, granting me the strength to help my friends out.
As quietly as I could, I drew the gun from the back of my pants and flipped the safety off. I stood up, still a bit woozy, and held the gun up at the two rather large assailants holding my friends down.
"Freeze assholes!!" I screamed as threateningly as possible, hoping they would give up.
No such luck. The guy checking Dagomar expertly turned towards me with his gun drawn to kill me. I had no choice, I turned the gun towards him and pulled the icy cold trigger. The bullet tore through the sky just as easily as it tore through the man's chest leaving him limp and lifeless on the floor. The second man let Heidi go and turned towards me with his gun pointing right at my defenseless head. Once again on pure instinct, I moved my gun to point right at the well-dressed man and once again pulled back the icy cold trigger, and once again the bullet tore through the man's chest and out his back just as he fired his gun. Right as the man fired, Heidi's foot fired from underneath her and caught his wrist, causing the bullet to go astray and saving my life.
We all stood amazed at each other and at the two now life-less men on my apartment floor. We exchanged questioning glances before finally I took a very nervous and shaky step forward towards the two.
"T-They know we're here..." I said, the terror inside me causing my voice to crack, "We gotta go..."
