Diet Omaha

I didn't think it possible, but I have discovered a game as addictive as Brood War. BATTLEFIELD 1942, a first person shooter that allows you to reinact some of the major battles that took place during World War 2,

- Match wits with the Desert Fox and his Afrika Core,
- Halt the Allied landings on the Japanese controlled Pacific Islands,
- Take on the role of Verceli Zaitsef in the ruins of Stalingrad, or
- Act out your homosexual fantasies and go save Private Ryan(ooh that Matt Damon) ;p

Another fun feature is the range of vehicles available; from Jeeps to Tanks, Aircraft to Aircraft Carriers, there's always something new.
The only downside I have yet to encounter is the hardware requirements. You're looking at atleast a 64MB Video Card/2GHz Cpu for smooth play :[

Yes there is a report here ;PPPPppppPPp I assume you all know the stories of the D-Day landings, the most famous being that of Omaha Beach. Well I am going to let you in on what REALLY happened the morning of...

June 6, 1944,

The weather was ugly, the sun breaching the grey cloud only once on the nervous trip to the beaches. The water sprayed from all sides, you tried not to think if it was from a crashing wave or a German artillery shell.

control the path of your own landing craft

The closer we went, the louder and more frequent the sound of stray bullets became. I snuck a look at several iron obstacles lining the beach, and with a thud, my craft came to an unwelcome halt. The ramp fell and I ran like hell ducking and weaving. I was a prime target, out of the 3 or 4 men ashore I was the only one still looking for cover. I found safety at the foot of a vertically concave cliff, by chance also discovering an unmanned Sherman Tank.

Rolling along the damp sand doing a solid 2KPH, I was forced to maneouver around the innumerable anti-tank obstacles and smoking craters. To the West of my landing point was the heavily guarded Omaha ramp. My fellow GI's at great risk created a small diversion. The confused Hun were overcome at the sudden appearance of an unseen Sherman Tank climbing the Omaha ramp. A nearby German soldier stood in his tracks and desperately fumbled trying to detach a grenade. The turret mounted machine gun opened a few seconds worth of rounds - the fallen body made a sickeningly appropriate welcome mat as I rolled further up.

drive yourself or take along an extra gunner

Followed closely by a couple of adrenaline fueled Privates, we reached the ramp's top and headed East. A couple of confused and scared Axis grunts were dealt with in a harsh manner, simutaneously I took control of Bunker Point.

more control points mean more spawning locations

With Bunker Point secured and no time to lose, I jumped into my Tank and we headed towards the nearby town. The entrance to the town was an unfriendly one. A small hill lay just before the main street, which was littered with Iron crosses and concrete anti-tank "teeth", not to mention the German presence. Ooh my eyes were suprised to see 4 German soldiers grouped side by side. At the sight of Sherman they drew thier weapons - too late, a single Tank shell was enough to kill the quartet, ouch.

The Germans' close spawn point means instant revenge

Having had a few close calls in the tank, I thought it best to scout the road ahead first. Another GI drove ahead, into heavy enemy fire including that of an enemy tank. While Sherman burned out, I legged it back to Bunker Point to re-strategise. Those Germans sure weren't timid, instantly advancing to re-take the town entrance.

Time for some sniping - I hid behind the nearest obstacle, a tree I believe and held for a clear shot. A German rocket soldier who was firing on an incoming Allied tank, came into view. With steady hands and a pounding heart I fired...

head shots for instant kills

I jumped up and headed towards the town entrance in time to jump on the Tank as a Gunner. We rolled up the hill and onto the street. No more than 50 metres away sat a German Panzer Tank. Our standoff was brief! After taking a direct hit, I leapt from the Gunner's station and ran back down the hill - The out-powered Sherman Tank was blown away along with it's driver.

Tank vs Tank battles will not be decided by the Gunner heh

A bold move came for the Germans, as that very same Panzer headed unescorted towards Bunker Point. Hiding in the concrete trenches, I had 3 Grenades ready and a Bazooka armed GI was in position to strike at any moment. We pulled off popping attacks to confuse the Panzer and imitating my third Grenade, the German Tank exploded.

Once again I made the journey up the hill to the main street. This time no Tanks, only 3 German soldiers armed with Bazookas. I ducked behind a nearby crate and fired off 3 head shots before retreating once again.

Several GI's headed into town, ultimately to find the Axis HeadQuarters. The Germans took base defense very seriously, making it a deadly trip if you were not properly prepared. Many Allied troops made the unwise decision to advance past the street's end and into a nest of German activity. Through many different skirmishes, soldier numbers from both sides shrunk rapidly.
I was kept busy dealing with sneak raids on Bunker Point. After all was clear, I jumped into a Sherman and headed for town.
Zig-Zagging down the street, I stopped at a small part in the fence to the left of the Tank. Through the gap I noticed an enemy tank, which no later noticed ME. I let off a couple of beautiful shots, destroying the Panzer before it could land a shell within shrapnel range of me. On I rolled approaching the last of the Concrete Teeth.

The battle was winding down, German numbers were thin and Allied forces were surrounding the Axis HQ. One brave/stupid German ran out to exactly where my turret was pointed. With a quick tug of the trigger, that boy was airborne and the Beachhead was declared secure.

Follow up notes;
- Obviously I did die a few times during the game, but they weren't documented as to keep the story flowing.
- The numbers above the minimap represent "death tickets", each time someone dies, a death ticket is taken, when all are taken from one side, the game is over.
- The Screens were taken from the actual game, not a replay(no replays ;[) and don't show everything they should.
- Buy this game.

The End
