Being the first battle report I ever written, you will need to be gentle with comments and responses...8)
I started out with Zerg, and was praying for zerg. I'm not very good at Protoss and when the timer ticked down in the race selection screen, he quickly chose Zerg as I still stayed at random. I realized if I get terran, a Lurker rush was on the way. If I get Protoss, I would quickly become lost with a race I haven't had much practice in. When I saw I was zerg, a great weight lifted from my shoulders and I started to play.
I went with 8/pool and started an expansion at my natural early. There I placed two sunkens for any zerglings which to my surprise had not arrived yet. During this time, my overlord was taking a tour of the map for scouting purposes with enough time in between to smell the flowers. I found my opponent at the 2 o'clock postion working on hydras and lurkers. I assume he was hoping for a terran opponent.
First Contact:
Suddenly at my secondary expansion came a lonely zergling. Scouting out he made it through my sunkens before dying to the six zerglings I had place at my ramp. This is when my mouse became a light travelling clicker and I began to create a mass of hydras. I also started on a queens nest and two Spirals for teching. (I was pushing tech a little sooner than I wanted to, but it saved me in the later game.)
After getting Mutas and Hydras up to 1/1, thats when the first wave of overlord drops came right at my front door. I quickly cast web on all the enemy hydras and as the lurkers buried themselves I moved in some overlord of my own to detect the creatures. A mass battle continued until I was left with only some hydras and a few mutas. I sent 2 queens to the enemies base for some info.
Mid-game:
I used parasite on overlords to gather some info. My opponent had not expanded yet, but was working on building yet another large force of hydras. It seems my opponent was staying toward the ground. I quickly built another hatchery for faster unit production and expanded yet again to the northern mineral patch below the 12 o'clock starting position. I had about 38 minerals with all my units pumping, but I had over 1000 gas. I produced a nydus canal from main base to expansion at northern base mineral patch. This created a great opportunity on unit strategy.
Instead of a drop, he came full force toward my natural expansion. Hydras, lurkers, overlords, and zerglings came in hordes. He was using a great strat by having the lurkers attack my ground and micromanaging the hydras to attack my overlords. Thankfully I had some hordes of my own and came from the front with queens webbing, hydras, a few lurkers, and zerglings. I also had many overlords detecting those lurkers, but much of my troops were lost. From my nydus canal came hydras which in turn came from the north toward his troops. After a mass amount of destruction, I set about creating yet more hydras and zerglings.
Late-game:
Again a mass amount of hydras and lurkers came to my front door step. I had many hydras for defense, but instead of sending my northern troops of hydras, which travelled from the main through the nydus canal, I sent these units directly to his main. He was caught off guard because he tried to send his troops back. His units were met with defeat as my home troops followed to help out there fellow comrads at the enemies base. 'GG' was said and the game ended there.
Lessons:
*Upgrades to units when fighting a same race battle is needed to win.
*Nydus Canal is a great tool for getting units not only to expansions, but for moving mass amounts of troops to combat the enemy from all angles.
*Queens' web spell saved many of my troops. His troops were covered in goo at each and every battle.
