I was at 1193, and I said, hey I may have class tomorrow, but screw it! Let's play another. And of course, the only way to play ladder is ffa. Just look at my record, and you know I play ffa. When I was at 1100 I was 14-15. Maybe that is why I suck at team games. As an ffa player, I can't be too choosy about what game I join, so I went for the first ffa to pop up on my list of ladder games. The map was Winter Conquest, which was odd, since like 1v1's everyone seems to play on Lost Temple. The creator Moroni_LDS was apparently looking for a 6ffa. Well, I'm an ex-mormon, so Moroni and I traded Mormon jokes around. You know, Navoo puns, what did the prophet say to the quorum of the 12? We got two more people to join, but that was all. We were tired of waiting, so we just left. At the last minute, Moroni picked protoss, and the other two people chose random and zerg. I went random, as is my usual habit unless it is Lost Temple ffa.
Zerg (don't remember the nick) started bottom right.
Moroni (toss) started bottom left.
Terran (don't remember the nick) started top middle.
I started bottom middle, as terran.
As I began the game, I was pretty confident. I mean, golaiths and tanks can rip up on Winter Conquest, and I figured I would get a bunch of marines, find an open starting position near me, and get my economy going. After my early build order: 8th SCV depot, finish depot start barracks, get acadamy and another depot after that. You don't worry too much about rushes in ffa, so I went for scv's over marines. I figured one comsat would do, since it usually has for me in the past. After I finished my second depot, I sent out an scv scouting and found moroni next to me. That worried me, since he was the only one above 1200 in the game. What was worse, he killed my scv, so I had to send another one out. This one finds Zerg to my right, and retreats in the face of a sunken. I sent him to the other starting positions, and I find out Zerg has just finished a hatchery at top right. ALREADY! Well, needless to say this bugged me. So after, I fill my two bunkers for base defense, I get 3 marines and a medic, and go to punish the early expander. They die after killing about 4 lings. Right now I am worried. I have a 1200 guy next to me, and a Zerg with two bases on the other side, a protoss with no one next to him, and I just realized I have no factory. I throw up a factory right away and rethink my game plan. I decided I'd have to take the island above me to have a chance, therefore I decided to go air. That was when Moroni attacked. I looked at my base, and lo, my comsat is already burnnig madly. Luckily I hot key it, so I quickly scanned, and the two bunkers I had put up by my cc (covering all my minerals and gas) tore into the two dark templar, who died quickly. Surprisingly, I didn't lose my comsat, and I set about repairing it. After my first tank rolled out, I started another and researched seige mode, during that time, my starport was completed. I threw up a control tower for a dropship, and started a science facility. I had alot of gas, and I planned on irradiating the Zerg like mad. It was then the Zerg attacked, with about 24 lings and 4 hydras. I lost my two tanks, and had to repair.
My next two tanks, I shuttled over to join my bunker, cc and one missle turret at the island. Being short of money, I built a comsat center there before I built SCV's. I also set up the tanks on opposite sides of the island, and towered in. The next three tanks set up in seige mode, inside the square of my base (only a two square entrance due to clever building arrangement). My factory finally got a rest, and I set my two starports to full on science vessel production, researching irradiate. My expansion was starting to mine full speed, when Moroni finaly reappeared, and mind controlled a tank on my island. I scanned for dark templar twice, seeing that my missle turreet was being attacked, before I realized I'd be able to see dt if they were attacking my missle turret. So I took my marines out of my base, and killed the tank taking only one shot (I think the tank was directed at my missle turret). Then I had 3 wraith, so since Moroni left his DA by me, I went and killed it. The wraith returned just in time to die to several mutis attacking with hydra and ling support. My tanks got the hydras, who got my wraiths. His lings got two of my three tanks, and Irradiate and bunker fire got the muties. It was close though, since the last muties had to be lured in away from my starports to my bunkers. I got my factories going again, and made a group of 6 maries, 2 medics, since I had alot of money. I added another starport and a physics lab.
At this point, my regular comstats showed Zerg still had his two bases, Terran had the other island, and Moroni had taken the top left starting base. I figured that Terran was fighting Moroni, since he was talike about what great battles he was having. I started to move out with one of my science vessels, to irradiate an overlord or some other annoying tactic, when I noticed Zerg had my natural expansion. DAMN. In response I seiged a tank outside of it, and started irradiating. I killed a bunch of mutis, when he sent the defenders in, and they lost to my base defenses, getting a tank and 2 sci vessels (one with scourge). I then sent in my un-used m&m's to take back the base, and set up there, with two more tanks and a bunker with 2 missle turrets as defense. Finding out I was low on gas, I built another group of m&m's and sent them up to the right gas-only expansion by my island, with the first group, I built a cc there, and soon had 4 comsats reguarly checking the map. I had 12 wraith, and figured that was enough. SInce I was going air what with having an island expansion, I started on BC's despite the DA's Moroni had. I threw up two missle turrets on the edge of my base near him though. After scanning Moroni, I noticed a shuttle and two carriers coming towards me, and a cc starting at his natural. DAMN! he stole an SCV (turns out later it was from me. I don't know how. The base was rather undefended, so I sent in my wraiths, got the shuttle and two carriers without opposition, and took out his two SCV's, and his cc. Surprised by the lack of response, I figured he didn't have detection, so I charged into his base, hoping to snag two scouts sitting there. Just then a cannon warped in under me, and I turned around as fast as I could. His DA snagged a wraith though. A few minutes later, I see Terran has razed Moroni's expansion, and Moroni has restarted his natural with a nexus, also undefended. I decided to let it live, since he should be fighting Terran not me.
When I had 4 comsats, was getting BC's and upgrading with two armouries, I found a huge mass of hydras near Zerg's north base getting into overlords. I though "cool, they are going to kill Terran. Wanting to watch the battle I kept comsatting, just in time to see them move SOUTH. I figured they were going to pick up some more hydras at his home base. They were, but then I realized, Zerg is going to drop ME! I hadn't thought so, since he must have spotted the 6 or so comsats so far. Just in case, I brought up my wraith, and snagged two full overlords when he started over the edge of his base. He pulled the Ovies back and unloaded hydras, while my wraith ran for their lives. I kept comsatting for good measure, and sent up a Science vessel, who Irradiated an Overlord. That Ovie retreated right into the mass of hydras, wounding many. To distract him, I sent my wraiths around the bottom of his base, and attacked his natural, which lost an ovie and 8 drones or so. He parasited my Science vessel, and hit it with scouge. Just then my 10th 11th and 12th BC got done, so I sent em in. Some of the hydras had to be reloaded, and since many were damaged, and Zerg foolishly tried to defend at the edge of the base, I killed his main with many battle cruiesers damaged, but none severely. I had about 180 support then. 5 tanks several marines, 12 wriath 12 bc and 2 science vessel. Seeing Terran's island, my island, and all the mains were out of money, I decided to finish Zerg and started attacking. I was worried, since Terran had gone golaiths, and those could rip up my BC. However, once I finished Zerg, Moroni said good game, and left. Apparently Terran had killed him. I hesistated at Zerg's expansion, after he was eliminated, because alot of my BC's were damaged, 2 heavily. But by this time the gas and min only expansions I had were adding money, so I figured what the hell, and started producing tanks while sending in my BC's. I comsatted Terrans base, and found 5 BC's one of them Moroni's that was being killed. I yamatoed the rest, my only use of yamato the whole game. My wraith had been following the BC the whole time, so when 8 of his wriath came in, I killed em with mine. When his golaith finally arrived, I was on the edge of his main, and they came from the canyon below, big mistake. I sent in my BC, and my wraith, since I was really worried. But the golaith were only 21 upgraded, so I killed them losing 8 wraith and 3 BC. Moroni must have done some damage. A last ditch attack on my natural by about 8 golaith failed, while I lost my tanks. Terran then said GG. I said Good Game, and proceeded to move on to his new expansion, Moroni's old one. When that started dying, he really gave up and said GG again. Then he said the thing the bugged me the most "You know, mass BC won't work for you all the time."
That pissed me off. After all, I built other stuff besides mass BC, especially the wraith, and he should at least give me some credit, seeing as how I killed Zerg, though they had probably been fighting. I do do other stuff, and I think someone with only one strategy sucks. I adopt my strategy to the map and to the position.
Stuff to think about.
-1v1 specialists should not play ffa. A.k.a. Moroni and Zerg. They don't know how to balance power, and working up to a killing force is only good if you can still compete versus the other players left.
-Uprades count.
-Irradiate eats mutis.
-Sometime you shoudn't be careful and use Yamato. Sometimes it's better to charge in and save yourself the time.
-Gas only expansions are important.
Feel free to comment. I'll probably check them now and again and reply. By the way, this was the game that put me over 1200! Good game to all who played, I was really scared Terran would win. I think he didn't have enough factories. I must say I'm glad I left Moroni's expansion alive the second time. |
