Part I - Battle at Mar Sara
A mighty dark shadow loomed majestically above the feeble, terrified marine, far out in the depths of space on Platform Alpha-59A. As the marine gazed up, petrified, the enormous, ominous dark form glittered to life. The entire smooth, perfect surface glistened in its own light, and the round, vicious outline of a Protoss Carrier began to emerge. Miles above, dominating the field of view as it hovered before the crimson red planet behind it, the Gargantuan weapon of war rumbled slowly forward. Then suddenly it jolted violently to a halt! Brilliant beacons methodically began to scour the surface of the platform, as the great predator sniffed furiously for its prey. The marine began to run, casting back a horrified look at his hunter. A fatal mistake. His helmet flashed in the blinding light flooding from the mighty Protoss ship. The hunt was on. The marine scrambled to regain composure and stumbled forward. Behind him, mighty engines rumbling slowly to life, and with a burst of blue plasma, the glorious weapon, its rounded form arching forward into the cold dark night that is space, slid smoothly in pursuit. The marine, exhausted now, looked back once more, only to see the awesome ship filling more and more of the starry sky. His heart stopped as he heard the terrifying sound that only doomed men ever hear: the first deadly interceptor craft shrieking from its Carrier. The next one quickly followed, and the next one, and the one after that. More and more of the vicious craft screamed into the darkness, and soon the first one careened rapidly before him, plummeting down onto the hapless marine. With a tremendous explosion of light and fire the sinister interceptors opened up on their stumbling prey. One minute, there was a brilliant blaze of light. The next, there was nothing, as the great Protoss Carrier, alone now, slid smoothly once more into the cold, dark, void of Space, to again hide itself among the stars, awaiting others like it for the tremendous attack that soon would come. The wrath of Aiur would shortly befall the blood red planet that now once more had sole dominance of the skies.
Or would it? For far in the distance, a lumbering Zerg overlord drifted silently past. Faithfully relaying what it had just seen to its cerebrate, it cautiously slipped back into the inky blackness around it. The raging, biological warriors of the Zerg were already on the move, and soon the Protoss would no longer be alone.
"Patrol Alpha-59A come in please. This is the Dominion base camp on Mar Sara. Repeat, come in." No response. What's more, a scouting expedition had also mysteriously been lost. What was happening here? Whatever is was, it would soon be over. "When is the Norad II and her fleet arriving, Admiral?" "Within 4 hours, lieutenant, four hours," replied the wise, worried man from behind his cold metal desk, as he gazed out at the sinister, crimson planet around him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The High Templar strode into the room. All was still as the noble Protoss warriors gazed quietly up at him. "You have 2 hours," spoke the Templar purposefully, "to find out what has happened to shuttle 12. The Protoss race relies on you to discover what has happened to the craft." He paused. "Do not fail us. 2 Archons were on that shuttle." Stunned silence. "Dismissed." The soldiers quickly ambled towards their mighty fighters, and slid gracefully into them. A mighty hum resounded across the small Space platform. "5 scouts ready. We shall release upon your command," spoke the leader of the squadron. "Katel, proceed with your mission," came the steady voice on the other end. The Hum rose to a roar as the five golden ships soared gloriously into space. Swooping down again, they turned sharply, and headed off in the agreed direction. "Let all go well with them," breathed the Dark Templar Zeratul as he gazed up after them with a troubled sigh.
The scourge arrowed through Mar Sara space, viciously seeking an enemy ship to smash themselves into. Dedicated kamikaze fighters of the Overmind, the mindless blind terrors arched around the blood-red world below and homed in upon their target. They would soon give their lives as so many of their brethren had done, for the glory of their race.
A massive, T-shaped form lumbered majestically through Mar Sara space, radiating sheer power as it did so. The enormous, heavily armoured hull of the Battle Cruiser Krakatowa cast deep shadows on the occasional observation posts that it slowly past by. "Norad II, this is Krakatowa," spoke General Maknie. "We have 6 small forms on Scanner. Asking Science Vessel Endeavour to confirm, over." "Roger Krakatowa, out," came the response from the even greater vessel 10 miles ahead. Beside the Krakatowa, a huge round form with 3 enormous, pod shaped reactors at its sides revolved into view. Nearly a third the size of the leviathan beside it, the Endeavour reached out into the depth of space with her powerful scanners, and soon detected the six speeding intruders. "Krakatowa, finding confirmed. 6 minuscule intruders heading directly for you, over." "Roger," was the only reply. But that quiet answer masked the utter chaos that rapidly flooded across the larger ship at that moment. "Man battle stations! All crews report!" screeched the intercom wildly. The enormous craft violently lurched around to face its enemies."Open fire!" bellowed the General. As the rest of the fleet looked on, brilliant beams of laser light illuminated the skies. A screaming attacker burst apart in a blaze of light, its ashes plummeting down towards the bright red planet below. "Scourges!" shouted the General in shock. The first of the screeching blind beings smashed into their target, as the ship continued its pounding laser assault. "Defensive matrix!" yelled the general to the science vessel, "NOW!" The endeavour powered up for shield generation, but just as it did so . . . four more scourges, one heavily bleeding, collided with the Krakatowa. One moment, there was a vast, menacing, awe-inspiring war ship filling the entire sky. The next moment, there erupted an enormous, blinding fire ball, as vast shreds of metal tore apart and tumbled out into space. The Endeavour twisted away, and, although taking a great amount of damage, being nearly blown apart by a giant warped shred of steel, managed to survive to fight again another day. The captain of the great ship, however, never forgot that a timely defensive matrix could have saved 800 souls that day, and that only he was blame for the cruiser's untimely demise. A week later, he would be found in his cabin, a gun in his hand, a bullet in his head.
"Primary base, this is Katel, leader of scout group for shuttle 12." "Proceed with what you have to say, Katel," came the deep voice on the other end. "High Templar Norek, we have found what appears to be a large Zerg hive cluster. From our position, the defences look to be few. However, there is a force of 7 mutalisks and10 evil scourges patrolling nearby. Thus, we cannot proceed. What shall we do?" "Katel, hold your position for somewhat longer. The Fleet of Adun is approaching your position. As it arrives, attack the scourges. En taro Adun, brave ones." Katel leaned back inside his sleek, beautiful craft, as he watched the 10-carrier fleet draw closer on his radar . . . .
"The Overlord shall be content, Zasz," spoke Daggoth to his fellow Cerebrate from 10 light years away. "Your plan appears sound." "Indeed, I must agree, Daggoth. For my minions are entering the atmosphere currently, and what little resistance they have met has easily been destroyed. The only real resistance the pathetic Terrans could have offered, a lone battle cruiser, has been easily destroyed by my scourges. Yes, the Overmind shall be well pleased, good Daggoth." As the other Cerebrate closed the connection, Zasz was worried. He had lied. His forces were still thousands of kilometres away, and victory was all but assured.
"Hellllllo main base, this rec squadron 4 reporting, over." "Roger, commander Noro, roger." "We're skimming along at 0.1, and we think we mightta found something, over." "What's that, commander?" "Well, it looks yellow and it gots blue stuff coming out of it, so I think ya might know." "Protoss?" "Of course. Looks like, oh, an arbiter." "Wow! An arbiter?" "Yepper." "Destroy it, out." "Let's go boys!" Screamed Noro. A chorus of whoops sounded in reply as the Wraith starfighters swooped in upon their target. As the mighty, but relatively defenceless arbiter warship became larger and larger upon the view screen, Noro thought he noticed something. There it was again. It was almost as if a ripple in the fabric of space itself had formed infront of him. And there was another one. And another one! They looked almost as if they were . . . . "HALT! Get outta there! Get away, repeat, GET OUT!" screamed the commander wildly. The wraiths veered sharply off course and careened out back into space. But they were too close. As the arbiter silently retreated, the mighty, terrifying hulls of 4 great Protoss Carriers materialized into view, rolling out of the cloaking field which they once were under. A deep, menacing shadow darkened the tiny Terran craft into pitch-black gloom. "Hurry! HURRY!" bellowed Noro as a wave of interceptors swept from their mother ships and swung in upon their targets. A storm of deadly plasma fire ensued and as Noro and his wingmen gracefully blazed through it, three members of the squadron, their closest friends, were vaporized into nothingness.
"My fellow Templar, it is time." "Confirmed Katel. We shall follow thy lead." The scouts soared up beyond the platform, then turned rapidly in formation, plummeting down upon their scattering targets. "Open fire," spoke Katel calmly. A terrifying volley of lightning-blue anti-matter missiles burst forth from their holders as complete and total havoc rained down upon the scourge swarm. Mutalisks rushed up to intercept, but it was too late. "4 have been destroyed. Six more to go." "Understood. Fleet of Adun, proceed with attack." While the Zerg were distracted by the scouts, 10 vast ships slid out onto the battlefield, and, in a simultaneous wave of screaming interceptors, opened fire upon the defences. "Well done Katel, in you I am pleased. All scourges have been exterminated," came a noble voice through the communications network. "Yes Zeratul, but Gortlo has been killed." "A great loss indeed. But it was an honourable death. Retreat to the main base before you meet a similar fate." "Confirmed," spoke Katel sadly as he looked back at the utter devastation behind him.
"Zasz," rumbled a majestic voice through the Cerebrate's consciousness, "you have just lost a hive cluster. How goes it?" "It goes well, great Overmind. Our forces have arrived upon Mar Sara. No opposition has yet been met and an entire city has been infested." "I know it. And, if your forces should meet similar success even onto today, you shall attack Tarsonis tomorrow, with Daggoth at your heels." "So let it be." "And Kerrigan shall be there also. May you conquer your enemies tomorrow as you do now, Zasz."
Eight marines stumbled into the interior of a steaming Terran Dropship, currently under repair from its last, harrowing mission. Nine other dropships, all being serviced, also loomed above Amerigo Base, each one being loaded with any forces that could be scavenged from the depleted nearby outposts, which had recently been abandoned under heavy attack from the Zerg. As the marines nudged their stim packs into the proper position, a squadron of Wraiths zoomed over head, keeping patrol over the preparing forces. The marines briefly glanced at the nearby dropship, to see two monstrous acrilite Siege Tanks slowly roll in, each one being serviced by an SCV as it did. The soldiers dearly hoped that this mission would be a success, and that at least one of their friends would survive.
The porthole gracefully slid open as Zeratul strode in. "Greetings Tassadar. The Zerg Expansion Base has been destroyed by our fleet. Additional reinforcements shall soon Warp in near the captured base. As it stands, we shall proceed with the planetary assault with seven hours." "Very well, my friend," replied the great High Templar as he gazed out the observation deck of that mightiest of Protoss Carriers: the Grantrithor.
The hissing Hydralisks skittered onwards through the blistering acid rain of this blasted red world. The outpost was only a mile ahead, and their swarm covered the distance with alarming speed. Quickly surrounding the post, the dreaded beasts ferociously burst in, spines raised, jaws hideously agape. Nothing there. Confusion. The Hydralisks raced through the base, with no luck. Suddenly, a beep sounded in the distance, followed by a roar, and then a horse gasp. Another beep echoed through the base. And another. Soon, tiny, spidery mines were crawling their way towards the wretched beasts from every corner of the post! The Hydras bared their spines and thrust them towards the enemy units, but it was to no avail. With a growl that was heard for a mile around, the Hydras gave their live for the glory of the Overmind. Only one survived the ambush at Akamret, and even it was slaughtered on the way back. The last Zerg attack before the Terran offensive had miserably failed.
"Dropship Beta-1 ready to roll, over," spoke the cool voice of a dropship pilot through Amerigo's intercom. "Righto go go go, out," was the reply. "OK boys, here we go," said the pilot as the dropship slowly hovered off its bad, brown smoke hissing from its grey, weathered underside. The marines nodded in return while the big, ugly ship slowly pursued its tortured path into the sky. "Watch out, things could get bumpy in a few minutes. We'll be landing in the center of the base near the primary Zerg Hatchery with dropship group Alpha," informed the pilot. A frightened "OK," was the only response she got.
"We have spotted a large formation of Terran vessels. They are proceeding directly for our third expansion area," reported a patrolling overlord through its psionic link with its cerebrate. Zasz thought deeply from far within the orbiting Hive Cluster above the embattled planet below. This could mean trouble. "Tell your forces to mobilize rapidly to the hatchery," was the return. Zasz reported to Daggoth immediately after. "Daggoth, the Terrans are attacking. Their forces are more than I had expected. Tiamet forces would be of great use in exterminating them, for I fear even my brood may be too few. The Protoss are here also." "Very well, Zasz, I shall send a fleet. The Overmind has sent Kerrigan to you as well. She will be of great assistance." "Thank you, Daggoth. May we leave this blasted world in victory as soon as well can."
"Zeratul, are we ready to strike?" "Yes, Tassadar, our force is prepared to descend." "Good, fellow Templar." "What shall we do?" "A large formation of Terran ships is approaching the primary Zerg expansion on the fourth sector of Mar Sara," Tassadar spoke while referring to a brilliant hologram that had instantly appeared before them. "We shall strike at the secondary expansion to the north of this base. If we use stealth and cunning, we shall be able to proceed undetected into this hive cluster, and destroy the meagre resistance that shall remain after the Terran attack." "Then shall we leave in . . ." "1 hour, Zeratul, 1 hour." Outside, the massive forms of Protoss Arbiters swerved in and out of the towering, intricate formations of the mighty Protoss fleet, warping in enormous warships from across the surface of Aiur, as corsairs sailed swiftly into the stars for their hourly reconnaissance flights.
"Righto, we're nearly there," said the still calm Dropship pilot. The broken brown ship staggered through the last line of defences, then lurched towards the center of the Zerg hive cluster, damaged nearly beyond repair. The shaken marines, casting quick, nervous glances at one another, climbed towards the exit as the crippled craft continued its terribly bumpy ride. "OK, we're here. Good luck, boys. I'll see if I can get-" she was cut short by a violent jarr as the ship collapsed onto the infested ground. The door hissed open, and while the marines frantically clambered out into the darkness and the pounding rain, they could see the familiar, ugly outlines of 5 other ships landing nearby. "Go go go!" shouted the lead soldier, and they all furiously charged through the slushy creep into the hideous Zerg defenders.
"Daggoth, I require your assistance at once. The Terran force is gaining ground." "Zasz, you must wait but a little longer. My minions soon shall be there. Within 2 hours." "I am not sure where we will be in 2 hours, but we shall see. May the enemies of the Zerg fall before us this day, oh Daggoth." The Cerebrate turned away. Now it was time to engage his daring plan against the Terrans, and failure would be unacceptable.
"We are entering the atmosphere now, and shall land within half of an hour, Tassadar," The High Templar said as Tassadar strode into the Control Room. "Very well. Continue on course." The Carrier and its awesome fleet sailed through the upper atmosphere of Mar Sara, their immense bodies causing turbulent, vapoury currents to form all around them. These quickly smoothed out as the carriers gracefully arced up while the ground rushed ever closer. Soon, the mighty leviathans swooped through the dense, dark clouds which covered their target, creating great, airy ripples around them as they did. The attack would soon proceed, and it would have to succeed.
"Norad II, this is the Behemoth-class Battle cruiser Titan, over." "What is it, Admiral?" "The central Hatchery has been located. Our ground forces are currently attacking it, but it appears to be heavily defended. Perhaps if the Grand Fleet uses its Yamato cannons . . . ." "Correct. That sounds good. We have the proper energy reserve, and it seems that the other ships do to. Enter Nuclear firing position." "Confirmed." Outside, the vast ships ominously rolled into position, their immense, T-shaped hulls darkening the battlefield even more then the deep blue storm clouds did above. The line of ships stretched out gloriously onto the horizon, and soon an awe-inspiring nuclear fireball coalesced just in front each one. As the Terran troops scampered frantically away from the hatchery, burning, bright red explosions flared brilliantly in the sky above the beleaguered base. Twisted by the mighty battle cruiser's immense magnetic coils, the great fireballs warped in upon themselves, and finally, slowly, roared through the sky in a terrifying nuclear display. Ripping into the hatchery with terrible power, they violently tore it into a thousand, fluttering bits of fire, drifting aimlessly around the former Zerg hive. The original location of the enemy hatchery flared up spectacularly with tremendous heat, consuming all that had stayed too close. The bewildered Zerg armies, some flaming, others burning, retreated rapidly into the night, running away to fight once more, rather than being annihilated by the now overwhelming Terran forces. "Well done, well done," came the voice from Amerigo Base. "Now, quickly, construct a new, heavily defended Dominion base there. We need those minerals that the Zerg harvested there as much as our enemies do, and we can't let the place fall to anyone ever again."
The massive Zerg Guardians drifted unmoving through the inky blackness of space on the night side of Mar Sara. Escorted by a group of bat-like Mutalisks, and the enormous, terrifying forms of the first devourer strain, they sailed on towards their unsuspecting targets. Soon, the wrath of the Zerg would make itself known upon the pathetic Terran outpost located just beyond the beckoning horizon of the dark red planet below. One by one, the stars winked out as the living fleet moved to darken them, and slid down through the slowly thickening atmosphere. Amerigo base was just ahead . . . .
"Behold! We are here," boomed Tassadar, his powerful voice echoing across the Bridge. "Unload the Archons," said Zeratul calmly to the nearest officer, "and deploy the interceptors. Order Katel's scouts to locate and destroy all Overlords." The aid relayed the orders as Tassadar strode to the center of the Bridge, and, outside, the fleet eased majestically to a stop, the awe-inspiring, rounded forms of the Carriers filling the entire sky. Fighters screamed to attack below them as the fleet renewed its forward motion. There, just ahead, loomed the enemy Lair, and the mutalisks scrambling to intercept.
Commander Noro, although badly shaken, was determined to continue his mission. He was not about to give up so easily. Here he was, fighting for his race, his family, his ideals, and he wouldn't let the threat of death, or the loss of three good friends, scare him from his duties. "Reportin' in again, Main Base, Rec Squad 4." "Roger, Noro. Sorry about the loss." "So am I, but now's no time to weep. We're powering in at 0.3 and we think we might've found somethin again, out." "Gotcha, number 4, location?" "We're cruisin right over Amerigo, over." "Wow, pretty close eh? We can't find the target on our radar come on in and take a closer look, k?" "Will do, here we go. Got that boys? We're goin in!" Once more, the wraiths plummeted towards their enemies at dizzying speeds, their desolate world spinning wildly below them. A small crimson speck quickly appeared on the radar screen. The speck blossomed into 3 dots, then ballooned into a vast, unstopping tide of blood red. "Oh my God . . ." gasped Noro. He fumbled for words. The radio flickered reluctantly to life: "C-commander . . . d-do you s-see what I-" "Yeah," whispered the Pilot to his doomed base, "I do."
The line of Guardians came to a halt. Behind them lay the two shining moons of Mar Sara, before them the flickering lights of Amerigo Base. Cloaked by the dark, waves of Mutalisks flapped rapidly to attack, fanning out and closing in upon the Terran outpost from all sides. The column of Guardians, now nearly encircling the base, hovering effortlessly above the dimly glowing ground, casting ominous, spidery shadows against the moon-lit rocks, issued forth the deadly acid only their jaws could produce, and hurtled it towards their hated foe. The huge, golden blobs of toxin smashed into the nearest structures, blowing them effortlessly away to dust. Frantically, the pathetic Terrans scrambled to defend, yet as soon as a fighter cleared the airstrip it was brought back down by patrolling scourge hidden in the night. Missiles veered wildly into the air, yet only few hit their targets. The guardians were just too far away, yet off in the distance behind them, the dim outlines of four Terran wraiths begun to appear out of the surrounding darkness.
Katel looked down at the chaos beneath him. He was pleased. Not only had the base been wiped away with astounding speed, not only had all overlords been massacred, blocking the enemy's route of escape, but the protecting forces had actually retreated, and now were helplessly pinned into a narrow, volcanic crevice of jagged, knife-edged rock. With satisfaction the Protoss Pilot dove his fighter into the abyss, photon cannons viciously ablaze, missiles streaking at the writhing Zerg masses down there, far below him.
A boulder zipped by. "Er, commander," said Captain Peters, Noro's closest wingman, "are you sure we ain't a lil' low?" "No, Matt, we're doin fine. Guardians just up ahead." "I see it sir, but-" The radio crackled to life again: "You guys better come QUICK! We're dying here! Half the base is gone and-" suddenly a long, tortured scream reverberated through the airwaves. After that, nothing. "Gone," whispered Noro. "Another friend, gone forever." No time for that now. There was never time to be human during war. No grief, no anger, no emotion could ever be shown. Just do your job, like a cold, steel machine. Well, not quite like a machine, thought Noro as he deftly twisted his craft into the air and sent it spiralling up towards the nearest defenceless guardian. "I'd like to see a robot do this!" he said softly to himself while the guardian centered on his targeting display. "YEEEHAW!" screamed Peters, as he raced in to help his friend, veering under the nearest leg of the great, insect-like Guardian, firing his first volley of missiles. Noro's fighter leapt forward, arching up and over his wingman and plummeting down upon the shocked enemy, firing his first missiles and watching as the billowing smoke trails curved up under the target and a great explosion tore apart the first monster's wing, ripping the screaming creature to flaming pieces in a blaze of glory. "Good kill Lead!" "Ya know me Peters!" "On to the next one!" Zerg scourge were still far away as Noro hurtled down upon the next lumbering monster, firing two volleys in quick, firey procession, then diving down before jinxing back up again, watching the guardian die with a tortured roar behind him as he sped away. "Alright! Six left to go! Good job boys!" "No problem Commander! But we got 5 scourge movin' in!" "Shit! Wish we could cloak!" "My sentiments exactly," said Peters, "but we better engage them before they target us!" "Negative, avoid them!" bellowed Noro, "Focus on getting the Guards, maneouver 'round the scourge." "Roger-o!" The wraiths clustered together, then scattered as the first scourge flew onto the battle. Noro fired off a shot at the fanatic beast as he flew behind it, then slammed his air brakes, falling slowly backward before quickly hitting the afterburners, climbing above the battle, and launching another two volleys at the nearest retreating guardian, which promptly burst into a seething mass of blood and fire with a hideous, low moan. Three scourge had targeted him now, however, as he veered back to attack yet another mammoth Zerg flier, this one also trying desperately to escape. The ferocious scourge closed in rapidly as Noro's wraith screamed in on a collision course with the guardian, then lurched upwards at the last second, its shuddering hull coming just metres away from the enemy's carapace, while the blind scourge rocketed straight into their giant friend, tearing it and themselves to bits and burning down towards the nearby ground.
"Zasz, how goes it?" "We require your aid, oh Daggoth, immediately!" "I am near now. Within an hour, I shall be there." "The last attack by our brood has been nearly destroyed - it is even likely that I shall be forced to retreat into orbit once more! What shall the Overmind think?!" "Do not worry, Cerebrate - when the Tiamet arrives, he shall be well pleased." The communication was broken, and Zasz turned his potent energies back to the embattled planet's surface. Things were not going well. The Protoss fleet had moved to the last remnants of Amerigo base, and the Terran armada was approaching from the opposite direction, trapping the Zerg mutalisks and devourers, all that remained of his daring plan, in between. Oh, if only Daggoth would come! And soon!
Tassadar gazed solemnly out at the clouds before him from the Gantrithor's Bridge. They would be here within minutes now. Sure enough, 7 misty shadows began to appear against the clouds. Slowly, ominously, they grew in size until a tremendous steel leviathan, bristling with enormous weapons and twinkling lights, tore through the turbulent clouds and burst out into the open. Another vast cruiser appeared suddenly behind the first, until the two tremendous fleets, eclipsing the sun, faced each other openly in the skies. As huge nuclear fireballs began to form before the Terran ships' hulls, the Protoss carriers loosed their interceptors and the battle was on. "All we can hope for now is luck, Zeratul," spoke Tassadar solemnly as he faced his equally grim, equally worried friend.
Commander Noro was still around, and now his battered fighter sailed on towards the third enemy he had engaged in only a few hours. Behind him, Katel had gracefully vectored his own craft into firing position, yet Noro was too fast as he soared up, then twisted around to dive right back down upon his enemy, launching a volley of missiles that struck the Protoss foe square on the frontal shields. Katel fell back and let his ship plummet down towards the ground, then quickly curved about to fire and this time strike his rapidly manoeuvring opponent. Noro, his sweat drenching the cockpit around him, to focussed to yell or say a word, arrowed straight up into the sky, followed by Katel, then hit his air brakes to drop behind the Protoss Scout, letting loose another two missile loads and penetrating the weakened shields. Katel reeled from the impact, and was hit by a massive laser bolt from the Norad II hovering just above. The fighter cringed under the tremendous energy beam, yet managed to stay alive and pursue Noro in a frantically spiralling dive to the ground. Suddenly, a Terran Science Vessel exploded with a blinding flash right beside the duelling pair, disorientating them and sending their wretched fighters slamming into the battle-scarred, blackened boulders below.
Noro was awakened by a strong arm gripping his own. Slowly he emerged from near-death to see a Protoss warrior towering above him. Instinctively he reached for his gun, yet the Templar forced him up and pushed him forward before he could grasp its handle. "My name is Katel," said the Protoss, "and we must leave here immediately!" Noro, still dazed, could only stare at the smoldering wreckage of his Wraith sprawled out before him. Then he turned his eyes skyward. Directly above him, slowly spinning in its tortured, slow-motion descent, a titanic Terran cruiser, its wings issuing forth dense, black smoke, fire bursting uncontrollably along great, exploding sections of its lower hull, thundered down upon them, crashing majestically through the misty clouds. Noro gaped as he saw endless streams of mutalisks dart in and out of the capitol ship formations, wreaking havoc on the monstrous but slow-moving behemoths. And far off in the distance, great, hulking devourers raced closer, eagerly awaiting their first combat in service of the Overmind. Daggoth had arrived.
"Come," said Katel "Hurry!" The battle cruisers now filled nearly all of the sky as the two scrambled to avoid its imminent, apocalyptic impact. "We were enemies before. Now," spoke Katel as he ran alongside the human with ease, "in face of the same enemy, we are friends."
Stay tuned for part 2!
