The Starcraft Chronicles: The Hybrid Wars Episode VI
Zeratul looked over at Kerrigan as two hybrid guards dragged her away. She was unconscious and in a few minutes, the guards would see to it that she would be dead. Duran had the other hybrids, strap Zeratul to the energy extractor.
"Come Zeratul, you should be happy. The Queen of Blades is no more, your greatest adversary defeated."
"At the cost of a more dangerous enemy rising in her place. You are insane and your plans will destroy us and all those around us."
"That, Zeratul, is something that you no longer have to concern yourself with. You see, I have found that the energies that I have removed from you are no longer replenishing themselves as they once did. You have grown weak and you no longer can serve my needs any longer. This process shall be the last that you will be subjected to. If you somehow manage to survive, my hybrids will make your death quick and painless."
"You are too kind Duran, perhaps before I meet my destiny, I can present you with the same hospitality."
"Begin the extraction process as soon as possible."
"The extractor is charging, process can proceed in ten minutes."
Duran watch impatiently as the machine charged slowly and steadily. It gave off a very loud and annoying hum that Duran had become accustom to. Outside his walls, Raynor and Artanis had discovered Duran's facilities and now the two fleets were converging on his position.
"I can't believe we found Zeratul's ship. It must have been buried there for years. It's amazing we even picked up a signal."
"Do not be so amazed Raynor, Protoss beacons have a half life of five hundred terran years. Our ships are, how do you say, built to last."
"If Duran is in there, we have a chance to end this here and now. If were lucky, Zeratul may be alive and well inside those walls."
"I too hope for Zeratul's safety, and I have always felt that he was still alive. Are you ready to attack, Raynor."
"Ready as I'll ever be."
"In that case, bring your fleet under the cloak of my Arbitor. For Fenix and for Zeratul, all ships commence your attack."
The two fleets opened a hail of fire that shredded the installation walls. The automated defenses were no match for the combined firepower of both fleets and the installation lay cracked open like an egg at breakfast. Wraiths stormed forward and dumped their loads of paint over the installation. Several hybrids were revealed and now, the Protoss had something they could see and something they could see, they could also kill. Zealots and Dark Templar charged into the hybrid warriors and slashed at them with their blades. The hybrids fought back and toss the Protoss aside like rag dolls. Terran ghosts and dragoons landed inside the base and began a search of the area. The ghost sprayed painted in ordered to find hybrids and the dragoons provided support. Inside the base, Duran was frantically trying to hail his air forces located at a small outpost to the north of the main facility. Protoss and Ghosts splintered the doors of the lab and soon the facility had been overrun. Duran cloaked and chose the better part of valor and fled to another stronghold. Those left in the base were at the mercy of the invaders. All hybrids were killed, but several scientists were captured for any information they might have. Zeratul was found and was overjoyed at the sight of his brethren, fighting bravely against the hybrids. Kerrigan was also found, and was brought to Raynor's ship for medical treatment. With the facility in ruins, the two armies left the snow-plastered world for Aiur. Many were pleased that they had won a great victory that day, but others knew that this was far from over.
The next day seem to be when reality had set in for both the terrans and Protoss. Zeratul was back from the dead, and though it was good to see their once fallen comrade, Raynor and Artanis could not help feeling awkward around him. The next surprise was to come for Raynor who had not been told that Kerrigan was aboard his ship. In a meeting with Zeratul and Artanis, the medics reported that Kerrigan had begun a disturbance.
"So, what's our next move? Duran knows that we are on to him. He will retaliate, the problem is that we don't know where. It could be Aiur or he could hit one of the terran worlds."
"There is another concern, Duran has the essence of the Overmind."
"How the Hell did he get that?"
"He captured Kerrigan and drained it from her. She is as human as you are now and she is not very happy about it."
"What do you mean is? We didn't find her down there. Where is she?"
"If I were to tell you, then you would seek your vengeance and now is not the time."
"Now is just the time, she's weak and she doesn't have her Zerg power."
"There is no honor in killing a helpless foe. Now is the time to try and rehabilitate her. Mengsk took her humanity by giving her to the Zerg. She has been restored and now you wish to finish her. I talked to Fenix many times and he told me that you were crushed after she had been transformed. Would you be so quick to kill, the one you mourn for, all those years ago?"
"She is not the same woman I knew. The woman I knew died a long, long time ago."
"Commander Raynor! Commander Raynor!"
"What is it!"
"It's the prisoner Kerrigan, she is out of control down here in sick bay. What should we do?"
"I'll be right down. You put her here! On my ship!"
"It is the only ship with a medical staff to treat her wounds. Our ships do not have such techniques as your vessels."
"Raynor grabbed his gun and stormed for the sick bay. Zeratul and Artanis followed after him. Part of them wanted to stop him, the other part wanted to help pull the trigger.
On Korhal, Emperor Mengsk awaited the return of Raynor and the reinforcements that would follow. The attacks had stopped for now, but the Dominion was not powerful enough to defeat such an enemy. They had useless weapons and were a sitting target. Mengsk did not enjoy the idea of watching his Dominion crumble before his eyes. He needed a way to balance the war and he was out of options. Even a tactical nuke had failed to destroy these creatures. Every arsenal on every terran world was useless to him. He stared out at the burning desert in the hopes of finding a solution. As his eyes traced the devastated landscape, his mind reached back through time and he thought of the day that this world died. He contemplated the power of those weapons and what he could do with that kind of weapon. That was the answer he needed, the answer to the puzzle. He picked ordered an emergency transmission and called the central military headquarters.
"This is Emperor Mengsk, get me General Pasley."
"Emperor Mengsk, I am honored by this call. How can I be of service?"
"I have a particular assignment for you, General. It requires that you take an expedition fleet to Tarsonis."
"What is my mission at Tarsonis?"
"All in due time, general, all in due time. Have your fleet ready to depart at first light. When you arrive at Tarsonis, report back to me."
"Yes sir, I shall make my preparations at once."
"Good general, I knew that you were the man for the job."
Mengsk ended the transmission. Now he would wait for Pasley, to report back, and then he would have the great equalizer in his grasp.
Raynor, had made his way to the sick bay and made sure his gun was ready. Inside he heard screams and yelling. One set of voices was that of the medics, and the other lone voice was Kerrigan. He had dreamed of this moment for five years and now his chance had come. The door was locked, by he had his all purpose semi-auto key and the door was easily dealt with. He saw the medics huddled in the corner but he did not see Kerrigan. He stepped into the room and looked for any sign of the Queen. The medics signaled that she was behind the cabinet and that she had a scalpel. Raynor moved closer with his rifle in front. He sidestepped and tried to get a shot from where he was. At his angle, he had no shot and edged his way to the end of the surgery table. The cabinet was just five feet away and was separated from the rest of the room by a desk. Raynor, began to slide over the desk so he could shoot down on Kerrigan if she tried to run. He was almost on top of Kerrigan when she swung around the cabinet and stabbed Raynor in the leg. Raynor fell to the floor and Kerrigan tackled him, and tried to take his security card. He buried the muzzle of the gun into her side and unloaded half a clip. Kerrigan fell back and Raynor was back behind the desk and waited for Kerrigan to strike again. He waited, but all he heard were faint moans and coughing. Raynor looked down at his suit and saw that he was covered in Kerrigan's blood. He slowly rose from the ground and walked around to find Kerrigan sprawled on the floor, and gushing blood from her side. She was breathing in erratic spurts and was tore up pretty bad. He looked into her eyes and saw the fear and realized that this was not even close to the Kerrigan he had come to know. This was Sarah and he had gunned her down. The past seemed to erase in that moment and the slate was wiped cleaned by blood. Sarah lifted her head and tried to call out Raynor's name. He could barely hear her as she tried to speak.
"Jim…please…help me."
Her head fell back to the floor and he began to panic. He dropped his gun and began to yell at the medic who were still huddling in the corner.
"Don't just stand there dammit! Help her!"
He picked her off the floor and laid her on the surgeon's table. The medics began the rejuvenation process, but they feared it was too late.
"Your going to be okay Sarah. Ya hear me? Your going to be okay. Sarah? SARAH!"
