Sublime{SCA}==>Red Protoss/ Spawned at 10 o'clock
A little bit about myself first as this is my first report. I acquired Starcraft in May of this year. My developpement as a player has been anything but efficient, first I played the entire campaign just to be sure i knew all the units and be ready for online play.
Well, we all know how much good doing this does. Anyway, I started playing online about June, and made another mistake, I figured playing 5v3 comp on hunters would help me get better as a player. Now as I begin to understand the game, I must as Yoda says "Unlearn what I have learned"
Now, on to the battle!
As mentioned above, I spawned as toss on the 7:00 position while my opponent chose toss and spawned at the 10:00.
I have taken to fancy, when playing protoss, to go for mass zealots from a minimum of 3 gateways. Scouting with my 7th probe, I discover him at the 10:00 and decide to stay with my usual plan.
As soon as I had 8 zealots I attacked. I was met at his choke by 3 canons supported by just one pylon. I had my zeals attack the pylon but the canons were well placed and all my zeals died trying to run around them to get to it. it was a near miss though and what it did was cause him to canon up some more.
Back to my base, the minerals had gathered up even though I was pumping zeals so I decide to go for forge, gas, Cyber-core and Citadel of adun. my plan was to continue with zeals by upgrading them. In a pinch, I could get dragoons and was halfway to temps anyway...
At that time I also expanded to the 6:00 and sent 2 zeals to camp out at his nearest expands namely the 9:00 and 12:00 respectively. Just as I thought, he didn't expand. You see, on money maps, players often make the error that don't need to expand seeing as they have all the resources in the world.
This is a grevious mistake...
There can only be so many probes around in the same area before they mess each other up, my expansion allowed my probes breathing room. At the same time It means more territory under my control.
Now my expansion is setting up a massive starport complex because I am thinking that carriers will be needed to break his shell. My main is producing zealots and templars to deal with his eventual carriers.
Now, I figure I might as well send a zealot near his choke to keep tabs on him although i am fairly confident that he is still holed up in his main effectively containing himself.
I was wrong.
My brave zealot got to the middle of the map where he met an attack force of at least 20 dragoons! Huh hoh, I quickly throw up a pylon and 4 canons at my choke, my templar is nearby and so are my loyal zealots ready for the inevitable rush.
It doesn't come.
He probably wants to mass more goons before he attacks, he is ahead of me in units, I gotta pull a trick now or else. He doesn't seem to know about my exp otherwise he would've taken it out. My Stargates have just warped in and I make 3 scouts right away cause my beacon still needs to be warped in. I also make 3 Dark templars at my main because of a hunch I have about this herd of goons.
When the scouts warp in I send them to the center to have a look, sure enough the place is crawling with goons. a quick retreat towards my main tempts a few to follow but he pulls them back, he really wants to wait until he is godamn good and ready to attack.
That is until my three dark templars begin hacking away at them. i had guessed right, he didn't make any observers. By the way his goons were acting, i could feel him hesitate between attacking now or pulling his forces back inside his main, thats when my scouts showed up again to tempt a bit.
Basically my 3 DTs and 3 scouts acted like cowboys herding his army towards my main base, its 4 canons and my High Templar's psi-storm. When the dust clears I had lost one scout and 2 canons. I knew I had won a major psych victory.
"Carrier has arrived!"
Oh yeah, time to crack the shell, I send my new fleet of 4 carriers to his base through the 9:00 position, My zealots sentinel waves good luck to the fleet and finds a nice place to watch the show.
As the fleet arrives, I see he has cannoned up his base but good, he appeared to be creating more goons. The canons proves to much for my fleet and I am forced to order the retreat. Trying again but this time from the 12:00 finds him putting up canons just in time and again the retreat must be called.
"Wanna ally vic?"
Hell no! it seems everytime I win a game people always ask me that, it gets annoying.
He seems convinced the game could last for hours and laughs at my attempts at breaking in. He says that there is no way I can kill him because he is to well protected by his canons and that we should call it a draw.
Thats when the 5 reavers I had been working on knock on his door. After a slew of profanities directed towards me, He finally admits defeat.
Lessons learned
1) Even on money maps expanding is key, only now its more a tactical than a survival matter.
2) In Brood war you need detection!
3) Reavers are too slow to be good overall units but when applied to a specific problem, they rock!
4) When someone beats you, do not ask for ally vic, it makes you seem lame and weak, just take the loss graciously.
