Hi everyone! I’m back from a long vacation from life in general. It’s great to be back in the stress filled environment of school. Woo hoo! =P Anyway, over my vacation I was able to take a nice break from Starcraft and focus on other things…like other computer games =) Starcraft was kinda losing appeal, so I needed a new game so that I could get my get my “fix.” This new computer drug goes by the name of Septerra Core. A wonderful RPG with superb graphics and a never-ending plot, it’s a five star game. It was so enjoyable (and I’m still not finished with it) that I figured I’d give it a plug here at BR.com by writing a loosely based fanfic about it. I took a few liberties with some aspects and made sure not to give away any of the game plot, but hopefully this will entice you all to at least download the demo at www.lith.com. Hopefully I will get out a new chapter to these stories once a week, but with school exams, no promises.

Anyway…lets get to the cream filling!

Introduction:
exert from the journal of Azziz-- …but how does it all work?” many people have asked me… and the question is an intriguing one, for I cannot completely answer it. The structure of Septerra is a marvel that only the Creator could fashion, but in my studies I have found much about the secrets of Septerra. The seven world shells act as seven distinct layers that are connected to the core by a bio-organic spine. Thus comes the naming of the planet: “sep” being a prefix that means seven, “terra” meaning land, and “core” for the core at the center of the shells. Each shell is a distinct land with distinct cultures. The Chosen, the ancestors of Marduk, son of the Creator, inhabit the outermost shell and think that only they are important. My world of the second shell is also the shell of the Junkers who live off scrap metal that The Chosen discard from above. The third shell is the home of Wind City, which houses the holy guard. The fourth shell is the World Bazaar, while the fifth shell contains the warring nations of Ankara and Jinam. The sixth shell is the shell of the pirates and the seventh is the mysterious home of the Underlost… but more important than the shells is the core at the center. It acts as a great bio-organic computer that regulates the movement of the shells. It radiates an energy so powerful that the inhabitants of Septerra can sometimes harness it, and tap into the “core energy.” Proper use of this energy is highly coveted skill. Some say that the core’s energy can actually transform and mutate life like in the mold forests…but those who venture to find out about these forests on shell seven rarely survive to tell about it. They do however harvest the corite, a valuble mineral that is stronger than diamond. It is formed from the immense pressure and heat of the core. The core contains it all…beauty, power, wealth…and danger…

Chapter 1: The bleeding dust
The sun was rising. Slowly and painfully it drew itself upward into the sky like a wounded animal, its red blood covering the canyon floor. Three long shadows also dragged themselves across the blood-red ground, unaware of the sun’s struggle. The air was still cold and the lamentable sun offered no comfort… but the shadows didn’t notice. The shadows were focused... a task was at hand. They noticed not the sun, the canyon, nor the small cloud of dust whipped up behind them. They did, however, notice the small glint of sun as it reflected off a metallic item a short ways down the canyon.
“Shit.”
“Hey, I’m up for some action. It’s been a few nights since I’ve bloodied my hands”
“Yea, but more of those damn Chosen?”
“That makes it even sweeter…”
As the three shadows walked towards the glimmer down the canyon, the sun continued its struggle toward the sky and the shadows began to take shape. The middle shadow became a young woman, walking with confidence and purpose. Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail, its blue color accented in the light. Dirt covered her features and her clothes were anything but flattering; some tattered, yet durable rags disguising some armor, a pair of boots and leg armor. All part of the typical outfit of a Junker. She may be a Junker, but something about Maya was enough to capture any man’s attention. Like a leopard, she was a strong girl with a fiery attitude, but also beautiful in her own way.
The shadow to her left emerged also, but only enough to reveal a blue cloak that covered the shadow’s face and body. Aryam was a bounty hunter well known on all of the world shells for his mysterious appearance and deadly skill. Only sparks of red hair and piercing eyes escaped his blue cloak, which fluttered gently in the canyon breeze. Aryam’s past was as embedded in mystery as his appearance. Once a demolition expert for the Jinam army in the Corite wars, Aryam lost his arms in a freak accident and left the war, bitter and hardened after the bloody war. He became a bounty hunter in the World Bazaar on Shell 4 and then equipped himself with cybernetic arms, but never forgot the pain he had once endured.
The third shadow was the last to emerge and was still silent. The shadow transformed in the light into a man of medium build with striking blond hair. His armor was engraved with the symbol of the holy guard and ornate designs covered his equipment. Corgan, a member of the holy guard of wind city, was a noble warrior a man of honor. He pledged his help to Maya because of his desire to vanquish evil and perhaps impress his love…Layla.

“I still think we don’t need to kill them.”
“Don’t be crazy Corgan, they see us already.” Maya coolly responded. “Just keep walking. If they let us pass it’ll be fine, if they don’t…”
“They die.” Aryam finished
As they approached the guards, the travelers couldn’t help but to marvel at The Chosen’s technology. The race inhabiting the outermost shell of Septerra was known as The Chosen. The self-proclaimed ancestors of Marduk, the Chosen were the most advanced in practically every technological field, especially bioengineering. The chosen had a knack for egotism and self-centeredness. Their wars were known to devastate shells below them and The Chosen would sooner destroy inhabitants of other shells that kill the animals of their own. Maya’s mother was killed in a chosen war when The Chosen ships descended upon Shell 2, pouring havoc upon the land. But Maya was not fighting The Chosen for revenge…she was fighting for another reason. The Chosen guards were not like the robotic guards of the other shells. Their armor was biologically grown onto them. Most of the other shells had experimented with the technique of combining bio-organic materials and machinery, but The Chosen actually grew their battleships. Huge bio-organic war machines from a simple helgak coupled with guards whose armor was grown…
“Halt.”
“Is there a problem?”
“Lord Doskias is on the lookout for a band of reckless rouges.” Replied one of the guards looking down at a clipboard. “I’m afraid that I’m going to have to search you before you can pass.”
“I’m afraid that I’m going to have to kill you then.” Calmly remarked Aryam. The guard could only give a surprised look before two projectiles from each of Aryam’s metallic arms ripped the organic armor and body of the guard sending the guard crashing to the canyon’s dirt floor…in three pieces. The projectiles continued on, embedding themselves in the canyon wall, inches from a second guard. The action was so sudden that no one moved for a whole second. That second seemed like an eternity as a small cloud of dust rose from around the fallen guard. The particles of dust moved in slow motion, dancing in the air as the onlookers sat frozen in time. Suddenly the second ended and action erupted, as if to make up for the lost time.
“For the love of Marduk, Aryam! Why the hell did you have to do that?” Corgan cried, unsheathing his rune carved corite long sword.
“Shut up and kill something Corgan! There’s nothing we can do about it now.” yelled Maya as she pulled out her custom built super-rifle. Maya’s rifle was her own work, built from scrap in the Junkyards, but it was anything but a piece of junk. Maya took aim, turned the second guard from cheddar to swiss, and watched his carcass fall to the ground.
“Looks like there’s more on the way…” observed Aryam.
“Yea, two down, three to go.”
“What the hell is Corgan doing? He’s just sitting there! Oh wait…”
Aryam was about to yell at Corgan when he noticed the white circle of light around Corgan’s feet. The circle grew smaller and smaller until it touched his feet and Corgan began to glow with a white luminescence...he was harnessing his core energy. The three remaining guards took a knee and opened fire. The bullets ricocheted off Maya and Aryam’s armor and one caught Aryam in the side, sending him reeling with pain against the dusty canyon wall. Corgan, however, remained untouched as he sprinted toward the guards. His sword found fresh blood as it swept through the middle guard almost effortlessly. Turning, the other two guards were impaled upon the shining corite blade before the first guard’s body touched the ground. As the dust settled, Corgan watched the guard’s blood evaporate off his sword. The corite that the sword was fashioned from naturally rejected the dying blood, cleansing itself. As if echoing the sword’s distaste, Corgan turned to Aryam with a cold glare.
“Why did you make us do that? There are other ways than killing.”
“The Chosen don’t give a rat’s ass about you or me or any other lifeform in Septerra and you know it.” Snapped Aryam. “They would destroy this whole damn planet if it made them a little money.”
“Then again so would you, Aryam,” smiled Maya.
“Yea, well that’s different.” Laughed Aryam.
“Laugh all you want, but we’ve got a job to do…” sighed Corgan as he slipped back into the shadows of the canyon.
“We’ll meet back at the ship with the others soon to discuss the plans,” agreed the second shadow
“Plans? Oh yea, what were we doing again?”

to be continued…
