The rain batters the shutters on my windows. The shade of nature is upon me, inflicting its wrath on my dwelling. The wind swells, and forces its icy breath into my room. A bolt of lightning strikes the circle of stones outside my window. Lightning among the stones? That must be a sign from distant Brittania! I walk outside, unphased by the torrential maelstrom around me, and see a small grey stone in the middle of the circle. Could it be? I pick up the stone, and the familiar glow of a moongate rises from the ground. But wait, the moongates in Brittania were always blue, never this blood red.. Something must be drastically wrong. What can be happening? There is only one way to find out. I pull my courage to the sticking place and walk into the phosphorescent doorway to another dimension...

Oh... wait.... Damnit! This is an SC report! Wrong game! (Name which game I'm talking about in the first part and get a prize. I want which number of the series too.) At any rate, here is the actual report.

After a good amount of swearing when I was dropped from observing a 2v2 tao (stupid bnet...), I decided to get back onto the BR'ing horse, and found these players about to duel it out. I asked to join them, and they agreed. Special thanks to the two of them for letting me watch:

++swinger++ vs Dark^P2W

Pathfinding is for Morons

Map: Lost Temple
SC Style: Brood War

Players:

++swinger++ - 9:00 - Zerg
Dark^P2W - 12:00 - Protoss

Setting the Stage:

"You'll never get away!! I'll hunt you to the ends of the galaxy!"

Williams hurled himself at the opposing SCV on the opposite side of the plateau, and became locked in a deathgrip with his now bitter enemy. Johnson blocked and dodged, and parried with his own fusion cutter.

"Die!!"

A catlike swipe flew in front of Williams' face, and he felt the warm trickle of blood on his cheek. His eyes filled with fire, and his gruesome visage gazed out over the well trodden battlefield.

"You bastard, you will pay!" Williams came at Johnson in a flurry of blows, jabbing with his fusion cutter, and lifting his knee in an assault on Johnson's abdomen. The crunch of metal on metal crackled through the temple grounds, and Johnson fell to the ground.

"Say your prayers, Johnson." Williams leaned over to administer the death blow, and soon after, there was nothing more on the cliffside but a triumphant SCV, and a command center some hundred feet in the air, rising rapidly.

Build Orders, Scouting and Peons Oh My!

The game began with the bloody battle between my SCVs, and some other stuff that was fairly important, but less exciting. Dark^P2W went to scout with his 5th probe, but unfortunately went clockwise around the map, and so scouted everywhere but the location of his opponent in the first few minutes. ++swinger++, after discovering with his OL that his opponent was not right beside him, went for a 9 drone expansion at his natural. In due time, this exp-to-be was discovered by Dark^P2W, who sent over a zealot to hopefully break it down before the trouble began. Luckily though, ++swinger++ had his pool done by the time the zealot got there, and several lings hatched and took care of it, suffering only minor damage.

++swinger++ takes this respite in the action to fortify his expansion with a sunken, a few more lings, and another hatchery at the top of his ramp, but curiously enough does not morph sunkens on the higher ground. Dark^P2W has not been idle either, and builds a second gate, an assimilator and forge, and starts building a cannon wall at the bottom of his ramp, obviously preparing to expand.

Action Action We Want Action!

And we get it about now! ++swinger++ has morphed 3 lurkers, and has a small vanguard of about 7 hydras and 10 lings. These he sends on their merry way across the map.

Giving me the name of this BR (Pathfinding is for Morons) in doing so, the army jaunts at a quick rate to make their appointment with destiny. The lurkers get stuck on trees a couple times.

However, this assault goes poorly for a few reasons. 1: Zealots are tough. 2: Goons work really well on higher ground. 3: Lurkers only attack when they are burrowed. I think ++swinger++ was busy building in his base and forgot to burrow the lurkers, because they didn't start doing much until the rest of the army had nearly died. So, after only inflicting a minor amount of damage, the zerg host was hardly more than fertilizer for the beautiful potted plants the protoss often build.

Build Effects

However, ++swinger++, after wiping away a tear, returns to his base, and finds the army he had been building, along with the hatchery he built at his mineral only. Dark^P2W has not been idle either, and continues to build his army of goons, zealots and templar from 3 gateways. His expansion is fully online, and he is in good position at this point in the midgame. Also, he has continued his tech up, and now has a robotics bay (for those blasted doorbells) and a stargate, going for a couple corsairs. These corsairs killed 1 or 2 OL's, but were shot down by hydras fairly quickly.

Editor's Note:For those who are wondering why my CC was not in the corner in the minimap pic, I was trying to clear off the black on the map, and the players were not doing a very good job in that section. What can I say, I have a strong sense of responsibility.

The Next Wave

By now, ++swinger++ has a fairly large army, and he decides to use it. He sends about 16 hydras, a few lurkers, and a bunch of lings to rally outside the protoss base, only to be discovered by a scouting probe. This valuable recon gives Dark^P2W a chance to prepare for the onslaught, and he puts his units into formation.

In due time, the Bio-engineered weapon arrives, and proceeds to be destroyed by well placed storms, higher ground goons, and a bunch of zealots.

The ill-fated attack is again put down, with Dark^P2W only suffering minor damage. I sighed at that, as I dont like seeing my favourite race go down so easily, but realize that with 3 bases, ++swinger++ should be able to build a new army relatively quickly. I checked his base, and found only 5 hatcheries though, even though he has 3 mineral sites. I'm mystified by this, because both the main and the natural alone can support 6 hatcheries at least, and with the mineral only, that would bump the total to 8 or so. After a bit of searching though, I see why there aren't more hatches. ++swinger++ only has about 10 drones on minerals at his main and natural each, and his mineral only has about 6 or 7. I grabbed a couple screens to illustrate this.

Editor's Note: On a standard 8 mineral patch base, you should have 16-18 peons on minerals.

But anyway, Dark^P2W decides it is time to take the power back, and he moves the game into the final phase:

The Next Wave

With a mighty trumpet blast resounding through the air, Dark^P2W moves his army out to the center. He has 5 high templar, 10 zealots, 15 dragoons, and for some extra punch, 1 dark templar. All of these are 0-0-2, while ++swinger++ is lagging a bit with 0-1.

After meeting with a small scout force of hydras, the battalion moves on to the zerg base.

Editor's Note: Protoss ground - Hard on zerg, soft on hands.

After thundering through any resistance in a red, white and blue assault, the force arrives at the zerg main and tears it to the ground. GG's are exchanged, and another game has been won and lost on temple.

Lessons Learned:

1) Build enough peons. ++swinger++ could have outresourced Dark^P2W, which is the only way to win in ZvP, but he couldn't.

2) If 1 way is heavily defended, go in from another front, like a drop, or air.

Til next time,

PS. My reference to a red, white and blue assault was NOT meant to be related to the US, but rather to the blood, the psi storm, and the phase disrupter shots from dragoons respectively.
