Intoduction

I was hanging around the dead x17 with nobody talking and decided to see if any of my friends were on. I had found one friend that I haven't had the pleasure of talking to since the Strifeshadow demo and that is Bukashkin. After a nice little chat I challenged him to a 1on1. He had asked me what map and I had replied "a random map", seconds later I recieved a message giving me the game name and password and proceeded to join.

The map was named Sanctuary. Bukashkin told me that it was a fairly popular promap and that he had never played on it before and neither of us knew what it looked like. I once again had POD ringing in my headphones as the countdown began...5...4...3...2...1.

The Players

Bukashkin has been around since the game came out. An all around great guy and even greater player. He has awesome skills and I have seen him at the top of many different ladders. He had recently taken a break from Strifeshadow and started playing Starcraft again and, though his skill was not what it used to be, I was in for a great game.

Cer1dan, thats me! I've been around since the game had come out and have had a great time playing, though while having all this fun my skills have continued to increase and I am currently known amongst my friends as being a pretty damned skilled player. My best race is protoss followed by zerg and lastly terran. I was just looking for a game with a friend but I was in for a surprise.

The Map

The map was fairly interesting, it was on desert world the mains all had 11 mineral patches and 1 gas node. There were cliffs surrounding each main with a rather small choke point. Atop these cliffs is an expansion only reachable with drop or floating. The mains are circular and are all seperated by the cliffs in the center. Air units would have a very short distance to travel while land units would have a long way to go to get around the circular natural barrier. There is an expansion on the low ground in each corner of the map, also only reachable by floating or dropping. These had about 8 minerals and 1 gas node. The map was very well done and extremely well balanced, I was pleased with the way it was made.

On with the game

After seeing the countdown reach 0 and both Bukashkin and myself remain random I was greeted by a command center landing, glimmering with the beating hot sun of the desert planet. I was provided with 4 SCVs which I had immediately set to mining minerals. The world being unfamiliar I commanded my 7th SCV to scout my main for the choke, being near the bottom left of this battleground, I had also found my choke point at the bottom left of my main. Upon arrival at my choke, I commanded my SCV to build a supply depot, I had 9/10 control at this moment.

The supply depot had finally finished and I sent the SCV to the most likely place for my opponent to be, right behind my main. I took a SCV off of minerals to make a barracks, however, a large scorpion-like insect was in the way, preventing me from building my barracks. The SCV began to kill the scorpion then after slaying the troublesome beast, began work on a barracks. At the same time I started a refinery, planning to get my metallic units out quickly.

My scouting SCV, finding nothing at the main just above mine I sent it to the spot to the right of my command center, this obviously being the location of my opponent. After the barracks reached completion I had the SCV begin contruction of a supply depot and shortly after had another SCV begin a factory. Once again finding myself with enough gas to create a factory I had started a 2nd factory.

The scouting SCV was now hiding in the back of my enemy's base, hopefully unspotted for later scouting, even if it did not survive, It had sent me information on the enemy's race, the swarm...the zerg!

When my 1st factory had completed I sent the now idol SCV to build a supply depot and also ordered up a vulture. After a vulture had been made from my 2nd factory I began a machine shop with spider mines in mind, awesome tools if used properly, I then proceeded to make additional supply depots and vultures.

A small pack of dog-like zerglings came storming into my main, right past my barracks, my vultures tried their best efforts of hit and run to kill the vermin but only managed to dispose of all but 2, the final 2 begin killed by SCVs. Durring this battle my gas had begun to accumulate so I began a 3rd factory. I then sent an SCV to see what was going on see what the twisted minds of the zerg were planning.

I started construction of a starport so my army would have drop capabilities and shortly after started an armory in order to produce the might land-walker Goliath. The SCV I had sent on the suicide mission sent back info telling me that the zerg had advanced to a Lair, Spire and Hydralisk Den. It was at this time I sent the nine vultures I had produced to attack. When I reached his choke point I saw a line of drones heading out and northward, I decided to follow them, killing as many as I could, when the lat one had perished only a few vultures remained from the aerial attacks of the mutalisks. The drones had led me to the zerg's expansion at the only unoccupied main. I began upgrading my goliath's range at this point, seeing mutalisks. I also began a second command center to bolster my resource intake at an expansion at the bottom left of the battleground.

After the zerg had disposed of my vultures they sent their mutas into the back of my base, I had anticipated this and placed goliaths near my mineral line. When the mutalisks arrived they immediately fled. Soon after a line of zerglings came charging into my base, but being forced to go in a straight line through my supply depot/barracks barricade they were easily picked off by my vulture/goliath force with no losses. Another group of mutalisks attempted flying into my mineral line but began retreating when I commanded my goliaths to fire at them. I sent an SCV northward to start a 2nd expansion at the north-western corner of the battlefield.

Let The Battles Commence

I gathered my now large force consisting of goliaths and vultures, the majority of it being goliaths. Upon leaving my main I was greeted by a force of mutalisks and zerglings. They began ripping through the powerful metal of my glimmering metallic forces. I began frantically shouting commands through the com-link, telling vultures to move back allowing zerglings to engage other units to maximize kills. My goliaths firing a volley of missiles into the air, ripping into the flesh of the mutalisks. My vultures had finally finished the task of destroying the zerglings and the mutalisks, outnumbered by the ever more powerful goliaths fled.

I then rallied my forces outside of my HQ and then commanded them to begin moving towards the zerg's main base, only to be surprised by a large force of zerglings and mutalisks. I reacted quickly, retreating the southern-most goliaths away from the forces so they would not be ripped to shreds so easy as my other forces shot round after round into the zerg units. 6 goliaths remained as the last missile exploded into the gaping mouth of a mutalisk. Drenched in blood my goliath warriors proceeded to the zerg main.

I sent my small squad of goliaths into the zerg main to do as much damage as possible. I was once again hit by another force of mutalisks and zerglings. My goliaths now aided with more powerful weapons resorted to hit and run tactics to do as much damage as they could due to death being inevitable. I reenforcing squad had arrived seconds after my goliaths fell. With the zerg having few units remaining at this base, their forces were killed like they wre nothing and my goliaths and single vulture began ripping into a nearby spire. The spire exploded into a bloody mess in nothing short of a few seconds.

Reenforcements arrived and they began firing into the living buildings of the zerg, but only managed to kill a sunken colony and a few hydralisks before being killed. I then began sending another force of goliaths and vultures to the zerg main. I had added a 4th factory and began 2 more factories, my minerals gathering but all of my gas being spent, things were going well. The small force did almost no damage in the zerg main, killing a hydralisk or two before exploding to the sheer force of flanking hydralisks.

I began sending a force of 20, give or take a few, goliaths and a few vultures towards the zerg main. My goliaths almost immediately began firing missiles into 3 overlords cruising along the bottom of this bloodied battleground, killing the overlords almost instantly. At the entrance of my opponent's main hydralisk came pouring in from 2 direction, I cursed under my breath as my forces proceeded to be useless, killing nothing and being dominated by the overwhelming zerg force.

I had switched to tank and goliath production in order to counter the hydralisk masses, my weapons now even more powerful than before. I began floating a 4th command center to the center and dropped 2 tanks on the cliff, killing a drone. I then sent them to the northern portion of the cliff and sieged them and they began firing on the drones mining at the zerg's expansion. Killing a sunken colony and a number of drones.

Now having 4-6 tanks and a sizeable force of goliaths, I once again decided to attack the zerg. By pure luck my forces ran into a large amount of overlords heading westward and my goliaths began tearing into them, but whats this? They began dropping hydralisks! Seeing this new threat I sieged up the few tanks that I had and attempted to lure the hydralisks into tank range which was accomplished with ease. I had lost the majority of my goliaths but the zerg surely lost more than I did. 6 tanks and 2 goliaths arrived to bolster my forces.

I stopped my army at the south-eastern part of the battlefield, seeing the zerg trademark of "purple gunk" on the low ground, I sieged my tanks and began to lay waste to the hatchery that was sitting there. After the hatchery exploded I sent even more forces to join the current group. My military now consisted of 9 tanks, 6 vultures and 11 goliaths. I ordered them to move towards the zerg main.

My units reached the choke point and my tanks began transforming to the forever powerful siege mode and ripped through the hydralisk forces and the living buildings of the zerg. I grinned happily to myself as the zerg suffered this loss. However, during this attack he dropped a large number of hydras on my HQ. I paniced for a few seconds but upon calming I took the forces I was constantly producing and with some well placed tanks, repelled the assault.

The Mainless Zerg

My metallic forces now headed northward, stopping to kill a few hydralisks with ease. My weapons increased to their maximum strength as I continued northward, once again finding the "purple gunk" of the zerg at the north-eastern expansion. I commanded my tanks to siege up and destroyed the hatchery in no more than 2 volleys of the powerful blasts.

A lurker has begun pestering my north-western expansion and with no nearby forces or detection, I am unable to do anything at the moment. I sent a newly made sci vessel and my newly made forces to deal with the lurker. I then gathered my metallic military on either side of the zerg's last remaining base's choke points. I moved the group on the left slightly to the right but cursed allowed over my com-link and screamed at them to move back and wait for the science vessel to arrive.

When my science vessel arrived the lurkers unburrowed and fled into the zerg base only to return with a much large force. I began shouting orders at my troops, telling a group of tanks on the eastern flank to move to the back of my army and siege. This smart move allowed me to decimate the zerg forces. Countless hydralisks, zerglings and lurkers running to their death, doing very little damage.

I began strategically pushing tanks into his main, moving them up, killing the zerg base slowly but surely. The massive blows the tanks were delivering leveled the zerg base in about 90 seconds. But the zerg vermin were not entirely destroyed.

I knew exactly where they were, the center cliff expansion. I brought 6 tanks and placed them right against the cliff and they proceeded to siege. I then flew my science vessel over them in order to spot atop the high ground. The tanks began tearing into the last remaining zerg base but with all my goliaths being killed in the last melee, I was forced to use the terran technology defensive matrix, allowing a few of my tanks to live longer while I waited for goliaths to arrive.

Two dropships then loaded up 2 tanks and 4 vultures and dropped them onto the high ground where they destroyed the last remaining buildings, an extractor and a hatchery. The zerg had finally been destroyed after a long, bloody battle. The battlefield is soaked in the blood of zerg and the metal of honourable terran forces.

After Game Jibba Jabba

GGs were exchanged and Bukashkin and myself began talking about the great battle. We both had a great time playing this game. He then challenged me to Micro Wars and I gladly accept and...oh but wait, thats another story my friends. I asked his permission to BR this game and he granted it so I'm just gonna say thank you Buka!!!!

Oh yeah! the scores, the scores.

BTW, I'd like to remind you that his score is far worse than mine because he doesnt leave until it says "Bukashkin has been eliminated" so if he loses, his score is always far lower...usually.

Lessons Learned

1. Metal works versus zerg

2. Spider Mines go off on larvae

3. Tanks own(already know this but it can't be said enough)

4. Make sure you have detection vs zerg, lurkers hurt =

5. Vulture/Goliath is a great counter to mutaling

6. Random maps > All

Alas, this must come to an end

Yep, that's right, another Cer1dan BR coming to a close, your either gonna
