GUILD WARS
First Strike

The main war room of the main headquarters of the Kel-Morian Combine was restless, as the head General, Mah Sakai, the head Admiral, Samuel D. Stonebreaker, and all the commanders of the militias, were arguing upon what to do next. Confederate marines had just invaded their small mining colony of Ru, to the most northern part of their planet, Moria. An argument of whether or not the Kel-Morian Combine armies should go to war with the Confederate armies was the heat of the argument at that point.

"Quiet!" Mah Sakai yelled over the voices. "In my opinion, open war with the Confederacy is insane. I mean, I know we control the most powerful individual militia in the Sector, but going up against those pigs is something we can't afford to do!"

"But, general," Commander Malkovich, one of the more reputable commanders in the militia, spoke up, "the Confederacy's abuse has gone on long enough. There aren't any other independent guilds that can take on those fuckers. They've practically annexed all the corporations on all the other planets by now. You know they want resources, and the only planet capable of supporting the Confederacy's vision with that kind of money is Moria!"

"I agree," said Commander Crazy Bob. "Didn't we create this guild so we could fight off pig dogs like those Feds? I mean, what kind of army can beat a team like this. The Kelanis Guild's sheer power and the Morian Mining Coalition's influx of resources!"

Admiral Samuel D. Stonebreaker spoke up: "I see what you all are saying, and we have sent three representatives to Chau Sara to try and work out an agreement-"

"Fuck agreements, admiral, sir," Malkovich said, obviously very pissed off. "They never work out anyway. In a damn short time some one's gonna come along and fuck that up too."

Admiral Samuel ignored Malkovich's insubordination and continued speaking. "The Confederacy has pretty much taken hold of all the militias in this sector. If we attacked them openly right now, we'd have the Feds up our asses faster than I can fart!" He paused and looked around the table, his voice softened. "Have you maggots ever seen the brutality of war? It's not a pretty sight. If any of us went to war, there is no chance we would return. We created this Combine strictly for the purpose of PREVENTING war, not causing it."

The war room was quiet as a grave. But like a ghost floating out of its tomb, Crazy Bob spoke up: "If it's for a cause, then I'm damn well ready to give my life up for it. Besides, I'd rather give my life knowing I've made some sort of a difference than sit here and wait for those Confederate scum to come and take us one by one and brainwash us."

"It's not a matter of death, commander," Mah Sakai said.

Suddenly, from the shadowy corner, the voice of wraith commander Tom Kazansky spoke out: "Everybody's gonna die some time." Little did anyone know that the quote just spoken would have such an emotional impact upon soldiers. That quote would become immortal. There was silence, as no other man in that room could come up with something smart to say to Kazansky's remark.

General Mah Sakai was about to speak up again when there was a sudden knock on the door. "What do you want?" Mah Sakai asked, opening the door. In stepped a soldier sporting civilian clothes. The soldier was silent, and gulped a mouthful of air. "I asked what you wanted!" Mah Sakai said, voice rising from being impatient.

The soldier swallowed again and said quietly. "The three delegates we sent to Chau Sara... they were murdered - executed - in the negotiation room." The room remained silent.

"Are you positive?" Mah Sakai asked. The soldier remained silent. "Are you absolutely fucking positive?" Mah Sakai almost yelled. The soldier nodded, as he patched through a video.

There were the three Kel-Morian representatives seated at a table with a Confederate official. Everything was going well, when the door was suddenly blown open and the three Kel-Morian officials had their lives gunned out of them. Blood, guts, brain, skin and bone splattered all over the floors and walls. The three Confederate marines kicked the bloody corpses aside and left the room.

"Motherfuckers." Crazy Bob summed it up in one word, obviously thinking the same thing everyone else was thinking. There was a moment of silence.

"That," Commander Malkovich said, banging his fist on the table, "commander, is the one acceptable reason to start war with those fucking scumbags."

"I agree," another Commander, Jackson Hauler, said. "We got invaded, our mining colony was taken, some marines and civilians were slaughtered, they're probably sending in more forces for war, and finally... they just murdered three of our officials for no apparent reason. I say we take our positions back and show the Confederates they're not going to be pushing anyone else around from now on."

The commanders in the room all shook their heads in agreement.

Moria's three gigantic moons still hovered in the dark sky as three o clock approached. It had not reached dawn yet, so temperatures were more than freezing. The three moons illuminated the dark landscape of the planet, revealing large, ever-changing snow banks on the Ragnarok Ice Fields. All was quiet on the southern fronts of the ice fields.

But the silence was soon broken as the sound of patted footsteps was heard upon the ice, and the three moons revealed a large marine contingent standing upon the southern most borders of the ice fields. Sergeant Guy Montag commanded this marine group. They were ordered to head north and recapture their mining colony of Ru, finally signalling the start of the war. The marines stood around, shivering from both the cold and the nervousness.

However the battle would not be in the Kel-Morian's favor. Ru was situated upon a large plateau, with only one ramp leading up to the top. The plateau directly overlooked the Ragnarok Fields, which was directly south of the cliffs. North of Ru was inaccessible to anyone, because it was a mountain range that had constantly raging weather and deadly wind that nothing could travel through. That meant the only direction to attack the plateau was from the south, but it also meant that it was also the only spot that needed defending.

Sergeant Guy Montag ordered the marines north, and they began the long walk. Altogether there were three divisions of marines. Some vultures were zooming around the ice fields on recon missions, but the whole battle would be in the marines' hands.

After what felt like an hour to the attacking forces, the plateau came into view. Guy looked through his binoculars to see marines stationed on defense. He hoped that in this darkness the marines wouldn't spot them too easily. He could always use the snow banks for cover.

Suddenly, he was awoken from his own thoughts to the sounds of voices and guns. He looked around him to see some marines already on the ground, eyes open, empty expressions on their faces. Another shower of bullets rained down upon them from above, and Guy Montag ordered the 1st division behind one snow bank and the 2nd and 3rd divisions behind the opposite snow bank. He ordered the marines from his commanding division to begin climbing.

As the 1st division neared the top, he ordered the 2nd and 3rd divisions to charge out and give them covering fire. They did. The first two marines to escape the cover of the large snow banks were immediately gunned down. Sergeant Guy Montag ordered the 1st division marines to stand up over the top of the snow bank and fire. After firing off a few rounds, a couple of marines on the plateau dropped their weapons and fell off the cliffs to the jagged rocks below. Nonetheless, some Confederate marines spotted them on the snow banks and Montag ordered them to duck. A couple of the Kel-Morian marines were too slow and a hail of Confederate bullets shattered through their helmets and smashed through their faces, sending blood and skull everywhere. Leaving a path of blood, the bodies tumbled down the hill, finally ending up at the bottom where the corpses literally swam in their own blood.

Guy Montag closed his eyes at the sight. He took a large breath and ordered them to stand up and fire again. Their results were more accurate and they managed to knock one marine off the plateau each. This was good. However, on the ice, things were looking grim. Half the 2nd and 3rd divisions had been slaughtered and they themselves had not made much progress. Guy Montag noted this and realized the 1st division needed to both knock half the marines off the plateau or charge down the snow banks and aid the other marines down below. He decided to do them both.

Out of nowhere, from over the snow banks, a large group of marines charged down the snow banks, firing their rifles madly. Some of the bullets hit Confederate marines, killing them, or knocking them off the cliffs, sending them to their deaths below. But most of the bullets hit the cliffs just under where the marines were standing. But Guy Montag noticed something. As the bullets hit the cliffs, mounds of snow would fall off and to the ground below, often chunks of rocks would break off and fall down as well. He suddenly formed the idea in his head. He pulled all three divisions back behind the snow banks again.

The Confederate marines atop the plateau cheered madly as they thought they had defeated the Kel-Morian marines. But they celebrated too early, as all three divisions sprang out from behind the snow hills and began firing upon them. However, their aim was bad, as they were merely hitting the cliff sides. The Confederate marines began laughing. They hadn't laughed long when the ground beneath them suddenly started to shake. There was a loud booming noise and bits of rock began to fall off the cliffs and to the ground hundreds of feet below. Suddenly, the whole cliff began to rumble and shake. The marines started pointing to the ground. The cliff was breaking off and was about to crumble. Guy Montag had finally settled on a rockslide strategy.

The Confederate marines had little time to do anything, as the rocks broke off from stable ground. Since most of the marines had been standing on top of the cliffs, they too fell with the crumbling rock. Most of the marines were crushed to death in the rockslide. When the dust cleared, the Kel-Morian marines gunned down any survivors and began heading up the ramp to the top of the plateau. There was little opposition remaining.

The rest of the commanders in the Kel-Morian Combine war room had witnessed their victory and they cheered loudly.

General Mah Sakai quickly jabbed the radio button on the panel. "This is Mah Sakai to Tom Kazansky, do you read Tom?"

"I read you loud and clear, general," came the raspy reply.

"We've just taken back our ground, that means the Confederate reinforcements will be coming along soon. Be ready."

"We will be, general, we will be."

"Good, commander..."
