Late Night in Vegas

Map: Rivalry

VS.

Intro

Well, It was 11:30pm before I finally found the time to log on to Battle.net. I was determined to get a good game under my belt before I hit the sack, so I went to nohunters to see who was around. I didn't see too many people I knew, so I asked for a 1v1 to anyone that would take me. Persian-POW threw his hat in the ring at the challenge. I tried to sucker him into playing snowbound, as I've had great success on that map as of late, but he would have none of it. He demanded a land map, and suggested rivalry. Well it wasn't Lost temple, so I hastily agreed.
I started out top left, while the Persian guy was to the bottom right. As always I commanded the terran, while Persian-POW took on the challenge of facing me with the mighty protoss. From initial SCV recon, I deduced he was going for the standard double gate, double pylon opening. I had my sights set on factory units. And lots of them. So here was my build order.

Johnny's Early Build Order
8 Depot
9 Rax
10 Gas
11 Depot
13 Factory
14 Factory

POW thinks he smells a rat

POW scouts me at around this time and realizes that I am starting 2 factories. So he sends in a squad of zealots and a couple probes for a little late night CHEESE on me. My defense at this time consisted of 4 marines in a bunker next to my Command Center. Two vultures pop out of my factories and go to investigate my choke, before I get a chance to micro the little bastards, a few zealots kill one, and I hastily retreat the other. I just completed my 2nd factory when POW starts saying that he is cheap as cannons start to pelt my refinery. More and more cannons were built. I'd say about 4 total.

"Terran's suck without Gas." he says

Well he's right about that one. Fortunately I had enough gas for a couple siege tanks before my refinery bit the dust. He killed the first one while losing a few zealots, but the second one I parked next to a bunker with 4 SCV's nearby it to shield it from zealots. My tank slowly killed his 4 cannons and 2 pylons. My guess was that he wasted at lot of money on all those cannons, and I was happy about that.

Surprisingly I wasn't that low on gas, after that offensive cannon attempt. Here's what I built next.

Johnny gets some tech
Academy
2nd Rax
Comsat
Engineering Bay
1 Turret
3rd Factory
2 Armories

Military Build Up

POW expands before me to the 6 o clock expansion site, which is just to the left of his main. My vultures now have speed and mines and I mine the area around my mineral expansion, along with many bridges, ramps and expansion sites around the map.. I also mine the 9 o clock base to prepare to expand there soon. I'm doing good on gas, as I was making vultures and marines, and only spending gas on tanks. Well, I notice he's gathering forces at the 12 o clock spot. He already lost a few dtemps to mines trying to enter my main. He realizes I have taken my mineral expansion and soon sends in a medium sized group of zealots, goons and high temps to take it out. He was stopped luckily, thanks to the spider mines and the 5 tanks I had sieged nearby. In fact he took brutal losses. I thought this would be a good time to expand to the 9 oclock spot while he was slightly weakened. I was able to get that one up and running before he noticed it, I didn't feel comfortable attacking him yet, so I was content to build up, and kept scouting the expansions.

All Out War

I was rolling in the minerals at my 2 expansions, and constant comsatting showed me he had taken the top right starting base. He had the bulk of his troops stationed at the 12 oclock spot, but no expansion as of yet. By now I had 5 factories and 2 armories, and my factory units where at 2/2 upgrades. But he did have a lot of goons, zealots and high temp at the 12 oclock position. He had left my enough breathing room for my 10 vultures and 8 tanks to come across the bridge. Quickly I laid a blanket of mines right across the bridge at 12 and moved my tanks forward. Seeing my mines he backed off letting me get my tanks in perfect position. Goons and zealots went down in a blaze of glory as the arclite cannons hammered away. Fearing the mine field he just witnessed me lay, and the superior firepower of the tanks he backed off letting me claim 12 for my own.

Thinking the key to winning was to stop my resource intake, Persian-POW hit my 9 o clock expansion with a vengeance. Speed zealots and goons roared into the expansion determined to put an end to it. I had 3 tanks defending some rines in bunkers and of course the obligatory mine field on the bridge and around it. The mines were getting shot down with the aid of observers, so I moved a tank up closer to get shots off on the mine field clearing goons. The enemy charged in only to take heavy losses from the tank shelling. He came close to taking the expansion, but the bunker never fell with scv repairing it, and 2 fresh tanks from my main helped quell the attacking force. I quickly secured the area with more mines and made tanks and goliaths out of the 2 factories I had stationed at the 9 oclock base.

At this point my main was dried up, and I started mining the 12 spot with my transferred SCV's from my main. POW was scaring me, as he was mining all 3 expansions on the right side of the map. He also had the 6 oclock position at the bottom. Well, I didn't mention it, but by this time I had a nuke ready. I ran down to the 6 o clock expansion and dropped a nuke near the nexus, killing lots of probes and a few cannon. Immediately after I sent in 4 tanks and some vultures. I finished off the nexus before a mass of goons rolled in and took me out. He again assaulted my 9 oclock expansion, but I repelled it, killing 2 reavers he dropped into the fray with unsieged tanks.

I had been ammassing tanks and vultures in front of my main for some time now. I sent 12 tanks, a few goliaths, and like 6 vultures to his upper right base. I paused to wipe out his poorly defended mineral only expansion and sieged next to the ramp of the upper right start location. I left my tanks there for a while comsatting occasionally, before finally pushing up and killing the expansion. But before I killed that expansion, I noticed he had taken the 6 spot and the bottom left start location. But they were poorly defended as his horde of goons were massing in front of his main. I sent 6 vultures in, killing many peons before he moved his goons over to defend. Meanwhile my assault on his upper right base continued. Finally the 10 siege tanks made their way within range of his nexus and blasted it to bits.

The top right base and its mineral only natural still had quite a bit of resources so I took up mining of these bases. I moved a token force of tanks, vultures, goliaths to the 3 clock spot and killed his nexus there, but he didn't mind as it was already depleted of resources.

He was mining the bottom left 2 bases with abandon. Thinking I had the upper hand I rolled in with more tanks and vultures. I took heavy losses from zealots and goons before finally taking both bases. My 3/3 troops were really doing a number on his forces.

There was nothing left but the cleanup at this point. He had made a few carriers, but it was far too little and far too late.

Persian fought a great fight, but he finally concedes. As I proclaim the mysterious phrase "ggman".

This was quite a bloody conflict as you can see in the stats below. I didn't start outresourcing him until the end.
